    3. Carol, New York State began requesting vital records in 1881. However, the law was not enforced until some years later. There is a state wide index available in several locations around the state. You might want to read the following web site which has a page discussing the subject. While the web page mentions "upstate New York," it is the same for the entire state with the following exceptions: New York City, Buffalo, Yonkers, and Albany. http://ny-genes.blogspot.com/2008/02/how-to-obtain-copies-of-vital-records.html Cathy-0 ----- Original Message ----- From: "Carol Norman" <cgnorm@earthlink.net> To: <NYPUTNAM@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, March 15, 2010 3:31 PM Subject: [NYPUTNAM] Death Indexes 1900-Plus > Hello All, > This is the 1st time I have encountered a need to search for NY records & > I'm having a tough time discovering what resources might be available. > Can anyone please tell me if there is such a thing as an index to deaths > for Putnam County, 1900 & onwards?
