    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: GenealogistGirl Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.putnam/2314.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I think that you will have to research through Algonquin sources, since that was supposed to have been the tribe dominant in the Dutchess, now Putnam, area. There are a number of sources here, including a mailing lists for newbies to Native American research: http://www.accessgenealogy.com/native/tribes/algonquian/index.htm Here's an Algonquin names research site: http://www.surnameweb.org/algonquian/surnames.htm And here is a resource specific to Putnam county Native Americans. I think, however, that you will need to try to identify which ancestor was Native American, by the means normal to genealogy research. That means sifting through old documents and records specific to your family. I have a Native American in my tree. She happened to have been well researched by other people. I understand that the connections were made through land records. Native Americans and their descendants were given land grants and those were noted in county and territorial court and land records. Good Luck! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
