I am working on my family history and am trying to find out information on the Ashman family that lived in Garrison, Putnam County, New York in the 1800's. I know the following: The family name was Ashman or Ashmond. I have seen it both ways. My great, great grandmother was Sarah Ashman born in New York about 1842. Her parents were Redman Ashman born about 1810 and Sarah born about 1814. She had at least 8 brothers and sisters: John 1834, Mary 1836, Redmond 1838, James 1840, Jane 1846, Emeline 1848, Abigal 1850 and Margaret 1857. Redmond married Charlotte and had two children Mary and Ella. James Ashmond was enlisted in the Company L 6th New York Heavy Artillery from Phillipstown in 1862 at age 19. He died June 28, 1865 and is buried in the Hampton Virginia National Cemetery. Sarah married William Betts on July 3, 1865 in the South Highland Methodist Church. They had four children: Walter 1867, Ida 1871, Charlotte 1877 and Seward 1878. Walter was living in Fishkill but moved to Garrison after they were married. I believe all the children were born in Garrison. If you have any information on this family, I would appreciate having it. Thank you for your help.
