Author: fairfax44 Surnames: Palmer, Roscoe, Bailey Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.putnam/54.366/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Someone had asked my sources for the Roscoe line. In 1997, I wrote to Sally Sypher, the Putnam County Historian, requesting any information on the Roscoes. She wrote back with the address of a lovely lady in Iowa who descended from the Ft. Dodge Roscoes and who had done extensive research. I corresponded with her for quite some time and she sent me copies of numerous obituaries, church records, census records, letters between family members, land records and a list of other sources, all too lengthy to mention. If anyone wants me to look through her information for names not mentioned in my previous post (please provid details), I will be glad to try to help! He died 10 June 1817 age 67. He is buried in Sparta Presbyterian Church Cemetery at Scarsborough, Westchester County, New York. His wife, Rebecca, died 1 February 1834, aged 76 is buried with him. Note: the cemetery records for Luke and his wife, but he is listed as Luke Rosiver. However, his son Caleb says his father was Luke Roscoe. Luke Roscoe had at least one son, Caleb Roscoe. He was born ca. 30 November 1800 and died 23 April 1877. In the 1850 census listed as editor and printer (Westchester Herald), Hannah d. 22 July 1837, age 33, as well as several children are buried in Sparta Cemetery. He grew up in Harrison and lived in Osining. I am interested in him because he is the uncle of my 3rd great grandmother Jemima Clement. I am running into a brickwall with her and was trying to find out more using Caleb Roscoe. ..... 1 Jemima Clement b: 26 Oct 1806 in New York, d: 24 Mar 1850 in Peekskill, New York ..... + Samuel Betts b: 21 Jun 1803 in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, m: 13 Aug 1830 ........... 2 Charles Flecher Betts b: 19 May 1831 ........... + Hannah () ........... + Harriett () b: 1846 ........... 2 Joseph Betts b: 06 Jan 1833, d: 13 Jan 1833 ........... 2 Martha June Betts b: 06 Dec 1833, d: 22 May 1839 ........... 2 Thomas Betts b: 24 Oct 1836, d: 07 Nov 1836 ........... 2 Thomas Jefferson Betts b: 24 Oct 1837, d: 13 Feb 1868 ........... 2 William Henry Betts b: 15 Nov 1840 in Peekskill, New York, d: 17 May 1917 in Fishkill ........... + Sarah Ann Ashman b: 1841 in Phillipstown, m: 03 Jul 1865 in South Highland Methodist Church, Phillipstown, d: 12 Feb 1926 in Beacon ........... 2 Anna Augusta Betts b: 10 Oct 1843, d: 14 May 1886 in Phelps, New York ........... + Walter S. Root b: 1843, m: 12 Jun 1878 in Sing Sing, NY ........... 2 George Roscoe Betts b: 24 Dec 1847 in Peekskill, New York, d: 23 Jan 1930 in Olympia,Washington ........... + Rhoda A () When Jemima died in 1850, Samuel was not in the picture and the children were farmed out. Caleb Roscoe was granted guardianship of the minor children and he took in the two youngest although he was a widower at the time and had his sister, two daughters, a son-in-law, a grandchild and several other people living in his house. He must have been quite the guy. This is the 1850 census: 1850 Census - lived in Ossining, Westchester, New York (seems to be two households next to each other - 328 and 329 or 278 (Caleb, Henrietta, Stephen, Helen, Mary, Elizabeth) or 279 (George, Henrietta, John, Pheobe, Maria, Elizabeth). " Caleb Roscoe age 49, editor printer, real estate valued at $3,000, born in New York " Pheobe Roscoe age 47, born New York " Helen Roscoe age 17, born New York " Harriet Edget age 21, born New York " Stephen Edget age 23, born New York " Henrietta Edget age 5/12, born New York " Mary A Haywood age 14, born New York " Elizabeth Haywood age 14, born New York " John Feurer age 47, born Nova Scotia " Ann A. Betts age 6, born about 1847 in New York " George Betts age 3 born about 1844 in New York " Elizabeth Williams age 50 born in New York " Maria Strums age 48 born New York That is probably more than you wanted to know. If you have this guy in your records, please let me know.
