The Tompkins families were also in the area during the early settlement times and several Tompkins leased lands directly from the Wappinger Indian groups and were involved in the legal tangle with the Philipse, Cortlandt et. al. who claimed ownership of the land. Smith's likewise appear to have been settled in Putnam Valley and Kent area during this period. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
