Author: RevSteward Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.putnam/671.672.674.986.1018.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The Tax List included in the Pelletreau History for the Philip Philipse Pattent (1777) includes more than 4 Tompkins Land owners or Lessees - For the Fredicksburg Precinct (which would include The Tompkins Corners area (Peekskill Hollow and Wiccopee roads) have listed Elijah, John, Joshua, Cornelius, Silvanus, and Reuben. Kent of course is just over the hill and there we find Jacob et. al. in the Tompkins Land holder grouping. [pgs 122 and following]. A Peter Birger is also listed - possibly a variant of Barger or Barager. A "Affidavit of Timothy Shaw, 1767" included in the Pelletreau history of Putnam also refers to Elisha Tompkins and John Tompkins as people settled on the Philipse Patent prior to 1756. pg 120. These Tompkins men were involved in some way in the dispute between the Philipse landowers and the Indians led by Daniel Nimham. In Pelletreaus description of the Town of Putnam Valley he refers to Abraham Smith as coming to the Putnam Valley area by 1720 from Long Island but that it is more likely he came as the first of the group moving into the area in 1740. the Barger family, again according to Pelletreau's 1856 sources, were also earlier settlers to the area "Thke Bargers, whose name shows their German origin, have left a very numerous lilne of descendents i the town. The original settler of the anem was probably Peter Baragar, who bought 213 acres of land of the commissioners of forfeiture in 1780. The Old homestead is now owned by George Barger." Pg. 716. In describing the location of various family properties on page 717 Pelletreau then has this reference to a Tompkins family: "Next north of this came a atract owened by the Tompkins family, who appear to have been here for some years previous to the Revolution. Nathaniel, Joshua, Cornelius and Reuben Tompkins were here in 1777, but what realtaion they were to each other, we do not know. Nathaniel Tompkins lived on the place owned by Gearge F. Barmore..." Dutchess County has many original records and Putnam was in Dutchess for the period prior to the Revolution. That likely is a good place to do some research on these names. It appears to be the source of the original documents that Pelletreau includes in his 1856 History. I want to do a read of William Blakes 1849 Putnam County History and see what I can glean from that work. Thanks for sharing the names of Andrew Barger and Phebe Lehman and their headstones in Adams Corner. I have looked at the headstones in Tompkins Corner but they are very hard to read. Time takes its toll even of the Stone. Regards, Rev. Roy Steward Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I've seen mention that he is from Germany and she is a Princess but I can't be certain she was a German Princess. There is a possibility they made their way through Holland before coming to this country. There are two headstones for them at the front of the Adams Corners Cemetery. I also have all the info you share on my branch of the Tompkins family. This is indeed my branch. Joshua is the middle name of my great grandfather his first name was Egbert and he and Sarah Jane are listed in some census records as Egbert Joshua and E. Joshua Tompkins. My grandfather was the youngest of the Joshua Tompkins children - Jesse (whom you found at age 19) his older sister Edith (Aunt Edith - whom I met as a young boy married into another Tompkins line - that of Thaddeus or Uncle Thad). Augustus (Uncle Gus) was a joint owner with my grandfather (Jesse) of a farm in Dutchess County, NY. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I am looking for clues to earlier generations: my Smiths start with Isaac Adams Smith b. Sep 20 1756 in Canopus Hollow, married three times but my ancestor is Sarah Wixon b. 10 Nov 1767 (d. of Peleg). Their children were Isaac Adams Jr., David, Fannie, and Nathan. In the next generation down there is a Susan Jane, and the next generation has a Sarah Jane, which is why the name perked up my ears - I was thinking that two different branches of the same family may have named daughters for a the same ancestors. But as I said I can't see a connection there...yet. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The connection could have come through the Smith line especially if there was a Barger (or German Barager Connection) since the Baragers or Bargers were very early settlers who lived very close to the orginal inhabited Indian settlements in the Putnam Valley area per Pelletreau, "History of Putnam Valley." If the Baragers or some other families were displaced in the wars along the Rhine by Louis XIV (Hugenot) there may well have been minor German or German/French nobility settling in the Putnam Valley area. So far no leads on this but it is a thesis that would correspond to a remembered family tradition. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The Tompkins families were also in the area during the early settlement times and several Tompkins leased lands directly from the Wappinger Indian groups and were involved in the legal tangle with the Philipse, Cortlandt et. al. who claimed ownership of the land. Smith's likewise appear to have been settled in Putnam Valley and Kent area during this period. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
