    1. Re: [NYPUTNAM] Jesse Tompkins Family update
    2. I have no Isaac in that time frame, and my only Lemuel Smith, son of Samuel, was younger. I estimated his birth at 1775, and he died 14 Mar 1843. My notes on Lemuel follow: "Descendant Earle Smith: Samuel Smith (1737-1811) migrated about 1784/5 from the Greenwich/Stamford CT area to that part of Philipstown, Dutchess Co. that is now Putnam Valley, Putnam Co. Samuel had a large family and settled just south of Oscawana Lake. Samuel's wife is believed to be Elizabeth (Lockwood). Samuel's youngest son Lemuel (c1775 - 1833) married Charity Kirkum and lived nearby. "1810 Census, Phillips, Dutchess Co., p.80. Lemuel Smith (next to Samuel Smith). 1 male under 10, 1 male 10-16, 1 male 16-26, 1 male 26-45, 4 females under 10, 1 female 26-45, 1 female over 45. "1811, 15 Nov. Date of probate, Dutchess Co. Wills, Vol. 5, p. 603. Samuel Smith, Phillips Town, farmer, will dated 6 Apr 1811; probated 15 Nov 1811, Wife Elizabeth. Daughters Mary Owen; Anna Wicksom, widow; Dosha Colegrove; Sally Tompkins; youngest son Lemuel; Richard Carman; Jane Bell; James Martin; Henry Vantassel; Edmund Lockwood. Executors: sons Lemuel and Philemon and Richard Carman. Witnesses: John Horton; Richard Carman; Israel Horton. "1817, 23 Apr. Putnam Co. Deeds, Vol.A, p.223. Lemuel Smith of Philipstown and wife Charity sold 150 acres in Philipstown to Zopher Kirkum of Carmel for $4,000. "1824, 15 Jul. Putnam Co. Deeds, Vol. B, p.198. Lemuel Smith of Philipstown and wife Charity sold 45 acres in Philipstown to Zopher Smith of Philipstown for $187. "1824, 15 Jul. Putnam Co. Deeds, vol. B, p.199. Lemuel Smith of Philipstown and wife Charity sold 160 acres in Philipstown to Zopher Smith of Philipstown for $1200. "1833, 14 Mar. Putnam Co. Old Estates, Vol. B #585. Lemuel Smith, dec., of Philipstown died 14 Mar 1833. Widow Charity, 1 Apr 1833. Children: Zopher; Eliza; Caty Ann; Julia Ann; James; Susan Silleck, wife of William; Sarah Port, wife of Robert Jr., all of Philipstown and over 21, plus minor children Samuel; Lydia June; Hetty Maria; and William C., minors of Philipstown. Will recorded Liber C. p. 32." I see no "Isaac connection" to this Lemuel. Good luck. In the 1790 Census, for example, there is a Joshua listed in the list of Male heads of families (no women or children listed just a hatch mark for the number in each age and sex group living in the family) and there is also a Joshua, Jr. listed as a head of a family. Junior throws the effort awry :-( Was one of these the Tompkins Corner Joshua ? And how would either of these be related to Cornelius, Reuben, Nathaniel, et. al. I too have seen the Historical marker but that likely was initally placed in the early or mid 1900's and the Pelletreau Work is much closer to the sources (and Blake - if he has any original sources.) Blake's work is apparently available here on Ancestry.com. The corner stone of the Methodist Church should have a date on it - do you remember what date that might be. Many of the Stone and brick church structures replaced much earlier log or frame church structures. Pelletreau was reprinted as a definitive early history of Putnam County by the Landmarks Preservation Society, Brester, New York. I picked up my copy when at the County Records archives in Brewster several years ago. When I get opportunity that certainly will be a great resource center to revisit but much of the early Putnam County information needed is likely in the Historical archives of Dutchess County in Poughkeepsie. Will and land deeds, etc. would be very helpful. At any rate great to be sharing info with you. Regards, Rev. Steward Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
