Westchester County Genealogical Society (NY) Upcoming Meeting The next meeting is this coming Saturday. WCGS welcomes back Leslie Albrecht Huber on Saturday, May 9. Our local members will recall that she gave us a presentation called Crossing the Ocean with the Internet at our meeting on November 10, 2007. It was a great time so WCGS wants to hear another talk from Leslie. Her topic for this meeting will be Voyage to America. Leslie summarizes this topic on her website (_www.understandingyourancestors.com_ (http://www.understandingyourancestors.com) ) by saying, “For genealogy researchers, immigration can be a high hurdle. But for our ancestors, it was a life changing experience. Find out what setting sail to America was like during the 1800s.” A holder of a bachelor’s degree in history and a master’s degree in public affairs, she has published seventy-eight articles in family history magazines such as Family Chronicle, Family Tree, Heritage Quest and Ancestry, among many others. Come on! Come to the meeting!!! MEETING INFO: TOPIC: Voyage to America WHEN: Saturday, MAY 9, 2009 @ 10 a.m. WHERE: Aldersgate Methodist Church, 600 Broadway in Dobbs Ferry (across from Mercy College on route 9) Guests are welcome. Coffee and conversation precede the meeting at 9:30 a.m. For information about Westchester County Genealogical Society (Westchester Connection or Surname List), visit WCGS home page -- _http://www.rootsweb.com/~nywcgs/_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~nywcgs/) Hope to see you on Saturday!! > Yes, Congregtionalists from CT became Presbyterians in NY, and actually churches in the area wavered in polity between the two. Oldest in the area are Old Southeast Church on Rt 22 in town of Southeast (burials have been recorded and can be found online) and Gilead Church in Carmel . The old burial ground for thsat one is a mile or two away, where the site of the first church were. What specifically are you looking for? your Bradley's Squires burial place? His birth/baptism supposedly 9 Oct 1783. He died 29 Jan 1857 in Coshocton Ohio. Also wouldn't mind finding his father's death date and burial. What was Fredericksburgh (and before that the Southern District of Dutchess Co) is now the town of Patterson (and part of Kent ) in Putnam County NY. (Putnam split from Dutchess in 1812 or so.) What religion was your Squire? Unfortunately, there are no early church records for the Episcopal or Presbyterian Churches in Patterson , although both churches were around at the time of the Revolution. The Baptist church in Patterson is even a bit older, but most of their early records ended up in Millerton NY (Town of Northeast) when the Baptist Church congregation divided. Janet C

I understand that there not being one in an area, the Presbyterians would have been the nearest in belief. Jonathan Squire and his family moved from Weston Fairfield CT in 1783. There are baptism and marriage records at that Church. I don't know why they moved. I gained a lot of my Squire info from a book History and Genealogy of the Families of Old Fairfield by Donald Lines Jacobus. It didn't say where he found the info they were moving to Fredericksburgh. Wish I knew. A group of people and the preacher moved from Concord MA in 1644 or so. A religious disagreement I would guess. Thanks for looking. PERSI just said Dutchess County and being desperate I sent in a query. Los Angeles PL doesn't have this publication. They do have a lot of journals though. I'm pretty sure Fredericksburgh District is now in Putnam and I am told around Kent.. I am looking for a needle in a whatever. The family of Jonathan Squire moved from Fairfield Co CT around 1783 where the other kids were baptized and he died within two years after moving to Dutchess/Putnam (1784). The eldest son from the first marriage stayed. The widow Mary Reeves Squire went somewhere for 7.5 years ?Manchester VT? and married again in 1791 Pittsford, Rutland VT Barbara At 04:25 PM 4/30/09, you wrote: >Barbara, > >I just found the issue. The place you are looking for is St. Basil's Academy, right on Rt. 9D. The building is still there and appears to be active. This is owned by the Greek Orthodox Church and was used for various educational purposes, including preparing teachers. Around the Great American Depression its owner also owned the NY Yankees, I believe, and Babe Ruth visited there. During those days, and earlier, the Hudson would freeze over and West Point cadets would march and skate eastward to Garrison. Pary of "Hello Dolly," starring Barbra Streisand, was filmed in Garrison also. Barb N of NYC ************** A Good Credit Score is 700 or Above. See yours in just 2 easy steps!
