    1. [NYPUTNAM] New Data Base - Rensselaer County Marriage Index
    2. Bill & Cathy McGrath
    3. ANNOUNCING NEW DATABASE VOL. VIII - MARRIAGE INDEX RENSSELAER COUNTY, NEW YORK JANUARY 1927 - DECEMBER 1928 A. Volume VIII of the ten volume set of Rensselaer County Marriages with its 3,250 names, has now been added to the Troy Irish Genealogy website. The 8 volumes of the index that are now on line cover 43,250 names. As you may find individuals from counties throughout New York State, neighboring states and even far away states on the index, this notice is being posted to numerous genealogy mailing lists. Vol. 8 in particular has a number of Massachusetts residents listed in the index. B. You can view these marriage records by going to the Troy Irish Genealogy website at: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nytigs/ and click on TIGS PROJECTS and then click on RENSSELAER COUNTY MARRIAGE INDEX. It should be noted that these records, like most of the TIGS data series, cover the general population in the area and are NOT restricted to Irish surnames. C. Researchers having relatives with a RENSSELAER COUNTY, NY area connection, will be interested in these on-line, name searchable, records of names of individuals who were married in Rensselaer County, New York. If you live in a nearby county or even further away, you might want to check out these names. Take a look at the data base, you never know what you will find. You may even find a marriage performed outside Rensselaer County or even an earlier marriage for your relative that you never knew about. D. The TIGS website has a PRINTABLE FORM that can be used to request copies of the marriage documents from the Rensselaer County Clerk's Office. Mailing instructions and fees (only $5.00) are on the request form. There are SEPARATE request forms for EACH volume. Some of the items on the available documents will be: 1. Name, address, occupation, age, and place of birth (city & state or country) of bride and groom. 2. If marriage for each is first, or second. If second, was first ended by death or divorce and when. 3. Names of parents of bride and groom, including maiden name of females, and country of birth. 4. Names of witnesses to wedding. 5. Date and place of wedding and name of clergyman, minister, rabbi, etc. 6. Race of bride and groom. Regards, Bill McGrath TIGS Project Coordinator Clifton Park, NY

    1. [NYPUTNAM] Fw: Phillips-Knapp reunion
    2. Barbara de Mare
    3.   Summer is here, which means it is time to start thinking reunion.  This year the Phillips-Knapp reunion falls the weekend of September 19-20.  On Saturday the 19th we will have our traditional picnic at the park in Haverstraw.  For Sunday we have exciting new plans. Research over the winter has revealed that Daniel, Eli and Gilbert Phillips were indeed born at Phillips Manor as some of us were told by our grandmothers.  Eli gives this information in an affidavit he filed with his Revolutionary pension application.  There is no evidence that they were part of the Phillips Family of the Manor, but could be shirt-tail relatives.  They most likely lived northeast of the Manor, in a town now called Phillipsburg.  We will continue to research this matter. Our plans for reunion Sunday are to visit both the Phillips Manor Hall and the Phillips Farm, both of which are just across the river in Westchester County.  We will eat lunch in a nearby restaurant, and get private tours of both locations.  In addition, we will try to find a speaker who can tell us more about the Manor family and other Phillips families in the area.  It should be both fun and educational. Try to arrange to join us!   Barbara L. de Mare, Esq. Attorney, historian, genealogist, grandmother 155 Polifly Road Hackensack, New Jersey 07601 (201) 567-9440 office http://historygenealogyesq.blogspot.com/

    1. [NYPUTNAM] Westchester County Genealogical Society (NY) Upcoming Meeting
    2. Westchester County Genealogical Society (NY) Upcoming Meeting The next meeting is this coming Saturday. Debra Braverman will present The NYC 1890 Police Census to the WGCS at our last meeting of our genealogical year on Saturday, June 13, 2009. As many of us are aware, the 1890 NYC Police Census bridges the gap between the 1880 and 1900 U.S. censuses for those having ancestors who lived in New York City during that time. Since the 1890 U.S. census has been almost entirely lost, the Police Census helps researchers track their families at the midway point between 1880 and 1900. Debra will show us how to use it. Debra is a member of several genealogical organizations such as the Association of Professional Genealogists, the Jewish Genealogical Society of New York, and the National Genealogical Society. She specializes in NYC research, heir searches and due diligence, as well as Jewish genealogy. MEETING INFO: TOPIC: NYC 1890 Police Census WHEN: Saturday, JUNE 13, 2009 @ 10 a.m. WHERE: Aldersgate Methodist Church, 600 Broadway in Dobbs Ferry (across from Mercy College on route 9) Guests are welcome. Coffee and conversation precede the meeting at 9:30 a.m. Come to the meeting!!! For information about Westchester County Genealogical Society (Westchester Connection or Surname List), visit WCGS home page -- _http://www.rootsweb.com/~nywcgs/_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~nywcgs/) Hope to see you on Saturday!!

    1. [NYPUTNAM] newark cemetery will be open for all june13th/rain date of 14th at 10am SAFE DAY
    2. passing to you in case you had family that married, wandered or migrated out of area. never know where our relatives lie some days. lol-this is a safe day tho. so feel ok to go. felt it was close enough to be a possible help to some-if not-delete. linda 2009 "SAFE DAY" WOODLAND CEMETERY - NEWARK, NJ FAMILY GRAVESITE VISITATION & TOMBSTONE RECORDING DAY Saturday, June 13, 2009 - 10:00 a.m. 9:30 a.m. for volunteers (rain date Sunday, June 14) For old friends who help each year, we hope you'll join us again. For new people who have never had the opportunity, this is your chance to go to Woodland Cemetery in Newark, NJ to visit your family gravesites in the security of a group. For those out of state, our volunteers will help with pictures and tombstone inscriptions of your family gravesite. Each year the Newark Police Dept. has provided us with on-site protection, for which we are very grateful. Woodland Cemetery in Newark has over 83,000 burials from 1856 to the present. We are not affiliated with Woodland Cemetery in any way, but work only as a volunteer group trying to preserve the tombstone inscriptions and helping family researchers find their ancestors through our computer database. For those who are able to attend, we ask that you allow some time to help record tombstone inscriptions if you are able. Please invite your friends (adults only) - it is always an enjoyable day outdoors and you will be giving something back to the research community! We'll pair you up with someone, so please come even if you are by yourself. Anyone who will be searching for family gravesites and needs help in locating them, please e-mail or call us by June 5th to let us know what gravesite you will want to visit. We will not have all of the cemetery data with us - so you must request a map by June 1st. This way we can check for your family names in the computer database and prepare a map in order to guide you. There is no office at the cemetery. Anyone who cannot attend, but would like inscriptions and pictures of their family tombstones, please make arrangements with John or me by June 5th and we will do our best to record inscriptions and take pictures of your sites, time permitting. To everyone: please let us know if you will be attending so we will have an approximate headcount. The day is Saturday, June 13th, at 10:00 a.m. with a rain date of Sunday, June 14th, again at 10:00 a.m. If both days are raining, a new date will be set at a later time. If there is a question on the weather, anyone may call in the morning between 8:00-8:30 at 973-809-3428 to find out if we're still "on". The gate entrance for Woodland Cemetery is located at 670 South 10th Street between Springfield and Avon Avenues, Newark, NJ. Directions - take the Garden State Parkway to the Springfield Ave. Irvington Exit #143. Take Springfield Ave East to South 10th Street. Make a right onto South 10th Street. The cemetery is located a quarter mile down on the left side. Please drive into the cemetery and follow the main roadway until you see cars and the volunteers. As a reminder, here are a few suggestions if you are planning on joining us to record tombstone inscriptions: Wear long pants, a short-sleeved shirt, with a long sleeved shirt/sweatshirt over it. Wear socks and either sturdy sneakers or hiking shoes of some sort. If you will be spending a few hours with us, bring some cold bottled water or soda - you will get thirsty - and a snack. Also: * pencils/pens - we'll supply the paper * clip board (if you have one; if not, we will have a few available) * digital camera - if you have one - we are collecting as many digital pictures of tombstones as we can - but we still need the handwritten inscription also since the digital picture doesn't always show the exact inscription * sunglasses (easier to see the inscription) * small garden tool(s) to pull back weeds * garden gloves * plastic bucket to put all your "stuff" in - the tools, camera, chalk, etc. - it makes it easier for you to carry everything from stone to stone. * old towel or a kneeling cushion-- some tombstones are only inches above ground... * throw a folding beach chair into your car for rest Any questions, e-mail or call either of us: John Sass jajs918@aol.com Bloomfield, NJ 973-748-0985 Mary Lish mary.lish@verizon.net Nutley, NJ 973-667-0450 ------------------------------- **************We found the real ‘Hotel California’ and the ‘Seinfeld’ diner. 1. [NYPUTNAM] Rensselaer County Marriage Index
    2. Bill & Cathy McGrath
    3. A. Genealogy researchers who had relatives in New York State, Vermont, Massachusetts and in Canada may be interested in the Rensselaer County Marriage Index on the Troy Irish Genealogy website. Currently there are over 40,000 names in the 7 volumes of the index on line and another 3,250 names in Vol. 8 will be going on line shortly. It should be noted that these records, like most of the TIGS data series, cover the general population in the area and are NOT restricted to Irish surnames. B. As pointed out previously, you may find individuals from counties throughout New York State, neighboring states and even far away states on the index. In working with the 3,250 names in Vol. 8, it was noted that there are a very large number of Massachusetts residents included in the index. The following 7 examples from Vol. 8 will give you some idea that the index covers much more than just Rensselaer County residents: 1. Michael J. Fraker, residing in Bennington, Vermont, born in Walloomsac, New York, marries: Agnes Guering, residing in Hoosick Falls, born in Ireland. 2. James Callahan, residing in North Adams, Mass., born in Dalton, Mass., marries: Mary Fleming, residing in North Adams, Mass,. born Lawrence, Mass. 3. Arthur S. Davies, residing in San Diego, Calif., born in Montreal, Canada, marries: Elizabeth H. Coulle, residing in Troy, born in Canada. 4. Morris Halperin, residing in Glens Falls, born in Glens Falls, marries: Mildred L. Pawel, residing in Clearfield, Pa., born in Hudson Falls, NY. 5. Ernest H. Blodgett, residing in Brattleboro, Vermont, born in Grafton, Vermont, marries: Ethel M. Baldwin, residing in Brattleboro, Vermont, born in Grafton, Vermont. 6. Roger S. Clapp, residing in Boston, Mass., born in Lexington, Mass., marries: Winifred Irwin, residing in Boston, Mass., born in Quincy, Illinois. 7. Nils Mattson, residing in Hudson, NY, born in Sweden, marries: Helen Bolin, residing in Troy, NY, born in Sweden. (Another interesting note: This marriage was performed in Albany County and NOT in Rensselaer County) C. Address for the Troy Irish Genealogy website is: www.rootsweb.com/~nytigs/ Click on projects and then click on Rensselaer County Marriage Index. Take a look at Marriage Index data base, you never know what you will find. Regards, Bill McGrath TIGS Project Coordinator Clifton Park, NY
