    1. [NYPUTNAM] Vital Records Issue -- PLEASE READ
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: rtwhalen1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.putnam/2358/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello All I just wrote a couple letters to my State Assembly and State Senate representatives asking them to look into making the NYS Vital Records Index more available and preferably online. Several other states have done this and the index gives no more information than the SSDI already does. We've been paying 22 dollars per record for quite some time now and I think they've made enough to attempt a project like the digitization of the index. As always we can have more of an impact on our representatives with larger numbers so I would truly love it if my fellow NYS Genealogists wrote in to their representatives as well. If anyone wants to discuss it further feel free to message me. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. I don't know why the URL for the newspaper did not come through in my last email. I definitely incuded it. I will retype it here for those who are interested. It is a digitized database of the Putnam County Courier, courtesy of the Mahopac Public Library. There's a gap in the years from 1882-1891, but still very useful. http://www.localarchives.org/mahopac/ Carol Norman cgnorm@earthlink.net

    3. A person on the list, Joyce Pearce, sent me this message in response to my query about death indexes for Putnam County. Just want to say a big thank you to her, and to the list, because I found my missing link in less than a half an hour of searching this newspaper archive!! Yipee! This was a person I had been stalled on for several years. Welcome to the Mahopac Public Library Digital Archives Carol, This site has been great for me researching my family in Putnam and Dutchess Countys. Go into the the second line that says "click here to search the entire collection" and put in your family name and a year that you want to search. It's very tedious and time consuming, but well worth it when you come upon a marriage or obituary. You may have to keep track of each year that you've looked at. Good Luck, Joyce Carol Norman cgnorm@earthlink.net

    3. Carol, New York State began requesting vital records in 1881. However, the law was not enforced until some years later. There is a state wide index available in several locations around the state. You might want to read the following web site which has a page discussing the subject. While the web page mentions "upstate New York," it is the same for the entire state with the following exceptions: New York City, Buffalo, Yonkers, and Albany. http://ny-genes.blogspot.com/2008/02/how-to-obtain-copies-of-vital-records.html Cathy-0 ----- Original Message ----- From: "Carol Norman" <cgnorm@earthlink.net> To: <NYPUTNAM@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, March 15, 2010 3:31 PM Subject: [NYPUTNAM] Death Indexes 1900-Plus > Hello All, > This is the 1st time I have encountered a need to search for NY records & > I'm having a tough time discovering what resources might be available. > Can anyone please tell me if there is such a thing as an index to deaths > for Putnam County, 1900 & onwards? 2. Carol Norman
    3. Hello All, This is the 1st time I have encountered a need to search for NY records & I'm having a tough time discovering what resources might be available. Can anyone please tell me if there is such a thing as an index to deaths for Putnam County, 1900 & onwards? Or even a state-wide index that might have included Putnam County? I saw someone who I think might belong to my family in the 1900 census, listed as being in an almshouse in Kent, and am thinking he may have died soon after because I can't find him in 1910. Any suggestions? Thanks for your help. Carol Norman cgnorm@earthlink.net
