Hmmm... I am still on several lists that are still active and none have advertising banners. I think you may have heard a rumor! I like these lists when people post to the list so you can respond. I'm not so keen on the posts that come from Rootsweb and require me to sign on to reply. Frankly, I don't usually bother. Most of the county pages are still "up", but no longer active. Some of the materials were moved to local genealogy society sites. The old Rootsweb mail lists are used very little. A shame that such a wonderful resource has gone by the way. I've heard from some of the "ex-county coordinators" that Ancestry.com had pilfered some of the data, and other coordinators say that the advertising banners required by Ancestry.com, on the pages were too intrusive. Whatever the reasons, a wonderful resource is mostly a thing of the past. I thank you for your many contributions and efforts over the past years.
