    1. [NYOTSEGO] Death record, Asahel Thompson (b. 1876; died between 1905-1910)
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: moonpie71 Surnames: Thompson, Anderson Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.otsego/4811/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am seeking information or advice to research my great-grandfather, Asahel Thompson, born in Dec 1876 in Gilbertsville or Butternuts, Otsego County. 1892 NY State Census shows him as the second child, living with his parents (Francis/Frank, and Susan Silvey), older sister, Agnes, and younger siblings Myrtle, Clarance, Helen, Claude and Susan in Election District 1, Butternuts, Otsego County. Asahel enlisted in the US Army in Albany, New York, in 1898 as a Private, Company E, Battery 7, 75th Coastal Artillery. He was stationed in Fort Preble, Cumberland, Maine. He may have been stationed elsewhere as well, but I have not found any proof. Asahel married May C. Anderson (of Waterside, Albert, Nova Scotia, Canada) on 18 Jan 1900 in Portsmouth, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. Asahel and May had their first child (my grandmother), Emma May, 15 September 1900; second child, Chesley Laverne, born 6 January 1902. Both children were born in South Portland, Cumberland County, Maine. 1905 NY State Census shows Asahel, May, Emma and Chesley (he apparently went by Laverne) Thompson living in Election District 1, Butternuts, Otsego County. Asahel applied for an Army pension from NY in May 1905 (he filed as an invalid). I sent away for his pension file from the National Archives, but was sent a letter that the materials need to be requested from the Freedom of Information officer at the Department of Veterans Affairs, which I have done. 1910 US Federal Census shows his wife as a widow; she and the two children were living in a rented multifamily home or apartment at 30 Sheldon St., District 0090, Norwich Ward 5, Chenango County. Based on the dates of information I've found, Asahel Thompson died sometime between June 1905 (the date of the 1905 census) and April 1910 (the date of the Federal census in which his wife is shown as a widow). My best guess is that he died in Otsego County. I have no living family members on my father's side, so I don't have anyone to interview. I have full subscriptions to both Ancestry and Footnote, but with a frequently-misspelled name like Asahel, I've had no luck despite spelling it a variety of ways. My late father spelled it Aisel, but I've also seen/tried Ashel, Ashuel, Asel, a variety of wildcards, etc. Thanks for reading my long post! I am subscribed to NYOTSEGO-L, and welcome any information or advice to continue my search. Best regards, Nancy Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
