I am not sure if he was born in Butters, NY or Butternut, NY. It did say Butters on his Civil War records as his birthplace; however, that was transcribed; it could be an error. After talking with a genealogical person from Butters, they informed me its a small place and there are no Petersons left there. So I am leaning more towards Butternut.
