8/6/1875 > Poison and Death.-The Colliersville Poisoning Case-Verdict of the Jury.-Step Mother Glynn sent to Jail-Strong Evidences of Guilt. On the 17th of last month, Thomas Glynn, of Colliersville, was married to Sarah ROUNDY. Tuesday of last week, Mrs. Glynn called for strychnine at the store of A. Diefendorf but the merchant not having any on hand she brought a box of Rat Exterminator called "Sure Death to Rats and Mice." On the night of that day, after Tommy and Johnny Glynn had gone to bed, the latter was TAKEN VIOLENTLY ILL. His brother being tired and sleepy, did not remain awake and we shall never know how long the poor little fellow was in misery He had been sick late in the afternoon, and in the evening, but Mrs. Glynn was apparently unconcerned, and did nothing for the boy before he retired for the night. Glynn is a track 'walker' between Colliersville and Oneonta. On his return home, he was not appraised by his wife of the boy's illness, and he had no suspicion of anything wrong. In the morning Mr. Glynn called his boys to breakfast, but no response being made, he went to the --mer and FOUND JOHNNY DEAD on the floor. His wife and neighbors were immediately informed of the fact. Coroner Houghton, of Schenevus, was called and a jury of the following named gentlemen summoned to hold an inquest: John W. Burnside, foreman, John Van Dusen, Jerome Wells, --- W.(?) Hadsell, ---- and Anderson M. Barnes. It was established that Mrs. Glynn bought the poison and she admitted the transaction; also informing the Coroner that the box had not been opened, that it was still on a shelf in the pantry. Deputy Sheriff Farnham took the lady in charge for the purpose of procuring the box of Rat Exterminator, but it was not found where she designated. The house was then searched without finding it. The circumstances of the boy's illness were inquired into and all the evidence indicated that he lad HAD BEEN POISONED. The stomach was removed for examination, and the jury adjourned, pursuant to a call from the Coroner. After the preliminary investigation, Mrs. Glynn stated that she disliked to remain in the house as she feared different articles of food had been poisoned. On examination of the pantry it was discovered that the paper, covering a jar of jelly, had been torn; and the contents disturbed. Some of the jelly was fed to a cat, and it died soon after. Nothing was done in reference to the case until Saturday morning, when Mr. Farnham on complaint of her husband ARRESTED THE WOMAN, and placed her in close confinement in the Goodyear House. In the meantime the boy Johnny had been buried, and fresh evidence was being obtained indicating the guilt of the step-mother. On Monday the jury was again called, when the stomach was carefully examined by Coroner Houghton and Dr. Simmons, of Colliersville. It was not sent to Albany for analyzation, as reported last week. THE VERDICT. That in the opinion of this jury, deceased, came to his death by means of a poisonous substance, known as "Rat Exterminator," said poison having been purchased by Sarah Glynn, and we believed administered by her, with intent to cause death. After the verdict of the jury, Coroner Houghton, remanded the woman Glynn to jail, where she will await the action of the next Grand Jury. The boy Johnny was a bright, handsome little fellow and seemed much attached to his step-mother. There was no evidence that ……satisfactory all around. It may be hard to establish the guilt of the prisoner, but at present it certainly looks very dark for her. > Delaware County.-Walton. Squire SHERWOOD, aged 78(?), died July26th. > Eliza A.
