    2. I am greatly interested in John Magee of Decatur, NY. I have never seen it written as Mager. I believe Magee to be the correct interpretation and Mager to be the incorrect info. I have information about John Magee and his wife (including a copy of his pension record). I have been unable to prove that Jane Magee (my ancestor) was his daughter. I have a lot of circumstantial evidence. Here is earlier census information from my notes with my comments. 1800 Warwick, Orange Co, NY John McGee 4<10, 1(26-45) 1<10, 1(10-16), 1(26-45) 1810 Decatur, Otsego Co, NY J. On Ancestry.com I came across a listing in the 1840 census for Otsego County - Roll 329, Page 341, that interests me: John Mager, age 82, veteran. The form is oddly filled out. There is no first page. I=92m interested in finding out more about him as well as why this form is filed out differently then usual. I would appreciate any leads or advice. Thanks, Cindy Researching: Major/Mager and Brote/Broat/Broadt. ______________________________ X-Message: #2 Date: Fri, 20 Jan 2006 21:02:25 -0500 From: "Cooperstown Historian" <coophist@stny.rr.com> To: NYOTSEGO-L@rootsweb.com Message-ID: <017901c61e2e$becf1890$331a1842@Hugh> Subject: Re: [NYOTSEGO] 1840 Census Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset="Windows-1252"; reply-type=response MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-MIME-Autoconverted: from 8bit to quoted-printable by lists8.rootsweb.com id k0LH8nPH021350 Cindy, The page on which you found John Mager was a summary page, showing township totals plus Revolutionary War pensioners. In the 1840 census, the right hand side of each page is used for totals in the family, names of Revolutionary pensioners, and other information; since this is a township summary the left hand pages (with names of householders) are not used. In fact, John Mager is listed as living in the Town of Decatur, Otsego County, page 278 (printed), 535 (penciled) with the following listing: John Mager 00000000001 0000000001 The right hand of this page also shows him as a Revolutionary Pensioner aged 82. Decatur is a rural township on the eastern edge of Otsego County, adjoining Schoharie County. But his name is so badly scrawled that the used by ancestry.com obviously couldn't read it, and indexed it as John Magee, which is why only the summary was indexed under his name. But if you search for the name John Magee you should find it; or search for "Justice Platt," you will find your John listed just below him. Hope this solves your immediate problem. I'll have a look to see if there is more about him anywhere. He was born in Guilderland, Albany County, Sept. 16, 1761. He served in the Revolution: 4 months in 1779 in the Company of Capt. Schermerhorn, Col. Tesly's [?] Regiment; 9 months beginning March 1, 1780 in the navy on the Brig Lady Washington, Capt. Maguire[?]. 1 month beginning Sept. 1781, in the army, Company of Capt. Reinstadt [?], Col. Wemple's Regiment. On June 17,, 1790 he married Rachel Walker, of Noorman's Kill, at the Dutch Reformed Church in Schenectady; witnesses included his brother Abraham and her brother Benjamin. He was awarded a pension in 1832, then living in the Town of Worcester, Otsego County, apparently without any real documentation of his service beyond a good reputation. He died on June 2, 1844, in the Town of Decatur, Otsego County, and his Widow was awarded a widow's pension; it was increased in 1849. I note that in the Census of 1820, when he was in Decatur, he is listed as John Mager in the Ancestry.com census index, and John Magee in the NYBGS census index. I can't find him anywhere in the 1830 census. Hugh MacDougall 8 Lake Street Cooperstown, NY 13326 hmacdougall@stny.rr.com http://external.oneonta.edu/cooper http://external.oneonta.edu/ccal

    3. Rita, It's good to hear from you. Thanks for sharing your information. I have been doing quite a bit of research on another of my family line, who lived in Buffalo, NY, German. This new line of research has been rather intriguing. This is the first I've reviewed Revolutionary War records. I'll keep in mind interpretation of the writing of the surname as I continue my research. I"m interested in their first son, John. Have you been able to locate any additional information on him? Any advice on where I should look? FYI: I live in CT. Please let me know if I can be of assistance to you.
