I'm delighted to have the information about the Universalist burial ground, though I'm afraid the information in the Shirlee S. Ratbone and Cathy A. Rose, "A Collection of Epitaphs" is incorrect. I have the Bibles, and the only children of Zenas and Penelope were Nancy, b 1812, who m Ira Tanner; Daniel W, b 1817 (my great-grandfather, who m Nancy Pier);and Randall Chapman born 1814. Is that book available for sale? I'd like to have a copy. It is Randall's line which has been confused in several genealogies (Westcott as well as others). He m Eunice Gibbs 7 Feb 1836 in Cooperstown. They had 3 children: Emeline, b 1836, John, b 1840,and Evander, b 1842. Emeline died, and she may be the one mis-called Eliza and buried (I'm guessing it was in Cooperstown, and Eunice may have been buried there as well. Randall was appointed Path Master (Otsego Town Meeting, 1839), and at the 1840 census was still in Otsego, living next door to father Zenas. In 1855 he moved to Livingston County (perhaps after the death of Eunice??) and lived next door to his brother-in-law, Evander Gibbs. About 1866 (after Randall's son John returned from the Civil War), Randall and his two sons moved to Macomb MI, where they lived, Randall remarried, is buried. And in 1900 John moved to Everett WA (and is probably buried there- I haven't checked). So that John and Eliza Chapman are a mystery. It may be that the latter name is not Eliza, but Emeline, Randall's daughter. Gertrude Barber's original mss at NYSHA (not the Hawaii 1993 reprint by Martha and Wm Reamy) says: Vol 2, p 54: "Emeline Chapman, only daughter of Randall Chapman 14 years, Otsego." (I'm checking my Palm for the info, and I don't have the death date written, but it's given as Nov 5 1850 in the Reamy book. One connection that makes me curious is the mention of Bates. I suspect that Zenas' son Jabez (from Zenas' first marriage to Anna Randall) married a Bates. They were neighbors, and Jabez and wife Olive ___ named their son, b 1827, Charles Bates Chapman. Hmm. A connection? Jabez also had a dau, Ann Eliza, but she married a Philip Northrup and they ended in Girard, Erie County, PA, where Jabez joined them (no doubt after the death of his wife). Jabez died there at the ripe old age of 100 yrs, 3 mos and 16 days! Thanks for the info, and I hope I haven't overwhelmed you with mine.
