Can someone help me with my 3rd great grandfather Solomon Smith born between 1803 - 1810 in maybe Washington County, New York. He did live there. New research that I hope will give me more information on Solomon's Ancestors. I feel that Solomon Smith was born in the Washington County, New York area, most likely in Hartford, Washington County, New York. He did move to Easton, Washington County, New York some time after Hiram was born after 1845. But I feel that I made a connection with the Smith's from Hartford and Easton by the US Census'. What can be said about this man so far, with the research that I have found. He was born in New York. His birth date is not so clear. He was born any where from about 1803 to 1811. He married Sarah Sumner, daughter of, Joseph Drake and Hannah SUMNER in about 1835 in maybe Plymouth, Windsor County, Vermont, where Sarah was from. The 1840 Census: Plymouth, Windsor County, Vermont, he is stated to be between the age of 20 and 30 years old. The 1850 Census: Easton, Washington County, New York. Solomon is stated to be about the age of 47 years old, which would place him being born about 1803. Census Taken: On October 18th, 1850. Dwelling #444, Family # 453. Smith, Solomon, 47, abt 1803, (Should be 40), Male, Farmer, New York Sarah, 40, Female, b. Vermont. James, 15, Male, b. Vermont. Hannah, 12 or 14, Female, b. Vermont. Almira, 10, Female, b. Vermont. Mandel, 8, Male, b. Vermont. Hiram, 5, Male, b. Vermont. Lucy A., 2, Female, b. New York. (Note: I feel that this is where Solomon was born. I'm looking into the Smith families in the area.) The 1860 Census: Constantia, Cleveland Post Office, Oswego County, New York. Solomon is stated to be 51 years old. Census Taken: On July 12, 1860. 1870 Census: Factoryville Post Office, Avoca Precinct, Cass County, Nebraska. He is 60 years old. Census taken: On July 23, 1870. 1878 Nebraska State Census: Oak Township, Lancaster County, Nebraska. The last time Solomon is in a record that states his age. He is 68 years old. Parents Joseph & Permelia Whiston were born in MA. They had four children: Susannah Smith (b. 1802), Artemus (b. 1804), Lucy (b. 1805), & Lydia (b. 1808) in Holliston, Middlesex, MA. I have not found them on any 1810 census. I believe during this time they were moving to Otsego County, NY. I have found a 1820 census in Pittsfield, NY and a 1830 census in Butternuts, NY. Permelia is not in either. I'm assuming she died before this date and believe that her and Joseph are both buried in Stetsonville cemetery with their daughter Esther who was born in 1809 in NY. Now, here's the issue... I've found Artemus on a 1850 census with Cornelius and Rebecca Jenny and a Hannah Whiston. I've also found an obituary in 1892 for a Hannah Williams stating that she was a sister of Artemus and I think she was 68 (the age is hard to read. it almost looks like it could be 08 and the digits just mixed up on accident... 80). They may have posted her age wrong. It's a possibility. She could be the Hannah from the 1850 census or she could be Susannah (Hannah being a short version of her name. Then her age in 1892 should be 90.). And, if the age is correct then she would have been born after Permelia died and no other female mother is stated in the 1820 or 1830 census'; Unless she had died too; Then who is she?. If anyone can clear this information up, it would be greatly appreciated. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
