Dear Diane, In New York, marriages were not kept at the county level. You need to know the town in which they were married and contact the town clerk or historian. Some towns kept better records than others. Another option would be church records. If you know what church they attended, there may be a marriage record there. THE TROY NEWSPAPER PROJECT A multi volume Index of Death and Marriage Records transcribed from various Troy, NY newspapers A. The Troy New York Daily Post for the years 1846 to 1851 is the FIFTH set of newspapers recently added to the Troy Irish Genealogy Website. There are 2,343 reported deaths and 2,143 names on the reported marriages during this period. These records will be of great interest to genealogy researchers since the information in this data base predates the 1880 New York State law requiring the reporting of death and marriage records. These records may help with breaking down some of those "brick walls" that you have been struggling with. B. You can view these records by going to the Troy Irish Genealogy website at: www.rootsweb.com/~nytigs/ and click on PROJECTS and then click on THE TROY NEWSPAPER PROJECT. It should be noted that these records, like most of the TIGS data series, cover the general population in the area and are NOT restricted to Irish surnames. C. One of the interesting deaths reported is the one for John Jacob Astor. Johann Jacob Astor was born July 17, 1763 in Walldorf, Palatinate, Germany and died March 29, 1848 in New York City. At the time of his death he was one of the wealthiest people in America with a fortune of 20 million dollars which is equivalent to 110 billion dollars in 2006 dollars. He is buried in Trinity Churchyard in New York City. D. While 1,339 of the marriage records showed no indication of residence, those records where the residence was reported are of interest as they show numerous cities and towns throughout New York State as well as other states and even foreign countries. Some specifics are: 1. Most of the records were for the Capital District Area. Areas with the greatest number were Albany-51 records, Troy-888 records, Lansingburgh-29 records, Watervliet-12 records, Waterford-17 records, Schaghticoke-15 records, Sand Lake-40 records, Pittstown-20 records, Greenbush-15 records, Brunswick-41 records, Cohoes-9 records, West Troy-53 records, Berlin-16 records, Grafton-15 records, Hoosick-23 records, Schenectady-7 records, and Petersburgh-12 records. 2. There were a sizable number of records from the neighboring states of Massachusetts, Vermont and Connecticut. Connecticut has 14 records, Massachusetts had 58 records including 11 from Boston and Vermont had 59 records including 32 from Bennington. 3. For the New York City area, there were 5 records for Brooklyn and 43 records for New York City. 4. Residence was also indicated from the following states and Washington, DC: Arkansas, Alabama, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Maine, Missouri, Michigan, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, and Wisconsin. Of interest is the number of records for the state of Wisconsin which had 13 records. Six of the records were from the Wisconsin Territory which was prior to Wisconsin becoming a state on May 29, 1848. 5. Foreign countries listed as the place of residence were Ireland, Scotland and Canada. E. List members may be interested in two other transcription projects that are currently being worked on by the Troy Irish Genealogy Society. One of the projects is another Troy Newspaper, the Troy Daily Whig, covering the years 1834 through 1878. While the data entry has already been completed on these 44 years of newspapers, the files have to be analyzed and combined before they are posted to the website. The other project being worked on is Book 1 of the interment records for St Mary's Cemetery in Troy, NY. Data entry of these interments, covering the years 1900 to 1910, is almost complete. I have been able through Ancestry.com to fill in a lot of info. But I still am having trouble finding the parents of Dr. George W. Merritt (1839-1895)who was born in Otsego County, New York (as per the History of Otsego County found at http://genealogyandfamilyhistory.yuku.com/topic/440). I have the exact dates of his birth and death from the Cherry Valley Cemetery records. I am trying to track and confirm the parents of this George W. Merritt. I have included in my McClung family tree bits of info from other trees and documents that might support the people. But I remain uncertain. Who do you believe are George's parents, and what documents or sources do you rely on? By the way, we are distantly related to one another via the WHITE family line. The grandmother of Frances Isabelle "Fannie" (Gilbert) Merritt was Martha Cheney "Betsey" White and her ancestors i! nclude the White great grandfather who is related to my Mom's family. I still have to fill in added info on the WHITE relatives in my Isabelle's tree. I would appreciate your insight. I am very happy to make contact with a grand nephew of "Isabelle." A new mailing list has been approved by Rootsweb to represent the interests of genealogists and genealogy organizations in New York State. The list has been initiated by the N.Y. STATE COUNCIL OF GENEALOGICAL ORGANIZATIONS. NYSCOGO was formed in 1991 to facilitate communication between genealogical and historical groups. NYSCOGO provides a forum for local and state-wide action and interest in the genealogical field. Any genealogical organization in New York State is eligible for membership, which entitles the naming of two delegates who serve as the link between NYSCOGO and the individual society. "Genealogical organization" is defined as any organization that considers itself to have a genealogical function, including, but not limited to, genealogical, lineage and historical societies, libraries or archives with local history and genealogical collections. Though we hope that your group will be interested in membership to NYSCOGO, membership is not necessary for participation on this list. It is our wish that a Rootsweb mailing list will provide a more convenient and expedient forum for discussion, communication and sharing - meeting only twice a year can not provide as great an opportunity to communicate. * *Subscribing.* Clicking on one of the shortcut links below should work, but if your browser doesn't understand them, try these manual instructions: to join *NYSCOGO-L*, send mail to [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]> with the single word /subscribe/ in the message subject and body. To join *NYSCOGO-D,* do the same thing with [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]> o Subscribe to NYSCOGO-L <mailto:[email protected]?subject=subscribe&body=subscribe> o Subscribe to NYSCOGO-D (digest) <mailto:[email protected]?subject=subscribe&body=subscribe>

Asahel enlisted in the US Army in Albany, New York, in 1898 as a Private, Company E, Battery 7, 75th Coastal Artillery. He was stationed in Fort Preble, Cumberland, Maine. He may have been stationed elsewhere as well, but I have not found any proof. Asahel married May C. Anderson (of Waterside, Albert, Nova Scotia, Canada) on 18 Jan 1900 in Portsmouth, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. Asahel and May had their first child (my grandmother), Emma May, 15 September 1900; second child, Chesley Laverne, born 6 January 1902. Both children were born in South Portland, Cumberland County, Maine. 1905 NY State Census shows Asahel, May, Emma and Chesley (he apparently went by Laverne) Thompson living in Election District 1, Butternuts, Otsego County. Asahel applied for an Army pension from NY in May 1905 (he filed as an invalid). I sent away for his pension file from the National Archives, but was sent a letter that the materials need to be requested from the Freedom of Information officer at the Department of Veterans Affairs, which I have done. 1910 US Federal Census shows his wife as a widow; she and the two children were living in a rented multifamily home or apartment at 30 Sheldon St., District 0090, Norwich Ward 5, Chenango County. Based on the dates of information I've found, Asahel Thompson died sometime between June 1905 (the date of the 1905 census) and April 1910 (the date of the Federal census in which his wife is shown as a widow). My best guess is that he died in Otsego County. I have no living family members on my father's side, so I don't have anyone to interview. I have full subscriptions to both Ancestry and Footnote, but with a frequently-misspelled name like Asahel, I've had no luck despite spelling it a variety of ways. My late father spelled it Aisel, but I've also seen/tried Ashel, Ashuel, Asel, a variety of wildcards, etc. Thanks for reading my long post! I am subscribed to NYOTSEGO-L, and welcome any information or advice to continue my search. Best regards, Nancy Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
