Hi Barb, Sorry but I can't be of help with your Spafford family. I do not have data on Pittsfield, Milford, Decatur or Cherry Valley. Most of my data is from Oneonta & surrounding area. I found two Spaffords that died in Oneonta: Charles H. d Nov. 17, 1925; age 76 yrs; buried Sidney Missoura died Jan. 11, 1917; age 64 yrs; buried Sidney I would suggest that you contact the NYS Historical Assn. Library in Cooperstown, NY. You can find the contact information on the Otsego Co. web page. They have a very large genealogical library. Also the DAR books which have various transcriptions done by DAR members back in the 1930s & 1940s. They contain cemetery & Bible info as well as some other data. I'm not sure if NYS Historical Assn. has them or not but I know that the NYS Room at Huntington Library in Oneonta has a collection. Lucina/Lucinda SPAFFORD McKOWN . Born 1818, married Patrick McKOWN, left Westford Baptist for Maryland Baptist Church 1842, died 21 Dec. 1852 probably in Milford , buried Draper Hill. Is she the daughter of Rev. Elijah SPAFFORD and his 1 st wife Sophia DRAKE? What happened to daughter Mary E. McKOWN, born 1845, after 1860 Milford census? Sarah SPAFFORD , born 1830, and Elizabeth/Betsy SPAFFORD , born 1834, to Asa and Parthena SPAFFORD in Pittsfield . Both single and at home in 1860, where did they go – who did they marry? Eliza Louisa / Louisa Elizabeth SPAFFORD . Born app. 1810, married Joseph DUTCHER of Cherry Valley and moved with him to Michigan. Is she the daughter of William SPAFFORD and Elizabeth PIERCE of Decatur ? Julia SPAFFORD . Left Westford Baptist as Julia Miller. In Milford for several years with Fred MILLER. They sold land and I think they left county. Is she the daughter of William SPAFFORD and Elizabeth PIERCE of Decatur ? Where did they move? Hi Ron, Sorry I couldn't find Freeman's name is any cemetery in Oneonta or in any of my records except for the 1892 Oneonta Census: 2nd District Waitchill C Peet, 56 (male) Freeman J Salisbury, 13 Philania Mann, 56 Since that Census was just a listing of names, I have no idea when one house stopped and another started. He wasn't on the 1875 Oneonta Census. THE TROY NEWSPAPER PROJECT A multi volume Index of Death and Marriage Records transcribed from various Troy, NY newspapers A. The Troy New York Daily Whig for the years 1839 to 1848 is the SEVENTH set of newspapers recently added to the Troy Irish Genealogy Website. There are 2,814 reported deaths and 4,486 names on the reported marriages during this period. These records will be of great interest to genealogy researchers since the information in this data base predates the 1880 New York State law requiring the reporting of death and marriage records. These records may help with breaking down some of those "brick walls" that you have been struggling with. B. You can view these records by going to the Troy Irish Genealogy website at: www.rootsweb.com/~nytigs/ and click on PROJECTS and then click on THE TROY NEWSPAPER PROJECT. It should be noted that these records, like most of the TIGS data series, cover the general population in the area and are NOT restricted to Irish surnames. C. The following age distribution of the 2,814 deaths will be of interest: 1. No age was reported for 692 names and in 19 cases "child" was reported as the age while 33 cases were identified as "infant" and 10 cases were identified as "children". 2. A breakdown of deaths by age groups shows: Under 1 year - 120 names. Age 1 to 10 - 362 names. Age 11 to 19 - 133 names. Age 20 to 29 - 350 names. Age 30 to 39 - 278 names. Age 40 to 49 - 157 names. Age 50 to 59 - 139 names. Age 60 to 69 - 177 names. Age 70 to 79 - 182 names. Age 80 to 89 - 117 names. Age 90 to 99 - 30 names. Age 100 plus - 7 names. D. While 927 of the 4,486 marriage records showed no indication of residence, those records where the residence was reported are of interest to researchers outside of the Troy Area as they show numerous cities and towns throughout New York State as well as 25 other states and even 7 foreign countries. Some specifics are: 1. While most of the records were for the Capital District Area, other areas throughout New York State were reported. Some locations in New York State and the number of records were: Albany-146, Albia-10, Argyle-8, Ballston-5, Ballston Spa-4, Berlin-35, Brunswick-133, Buffalo-9, Cambridge-34, Clifton Park-8, Cohoes-12, Cohoesville-11, Easton-15, Grafton-12, Granville-12, Greenbush-39, Green Island-4, Greenwich-10, Glens Falls-7, Halfmoon-6, Hoosick-57, Hoosick Falls-15, Jackson-9, Kinderhook-6, Lansingburgh-87, Mechanicville-11, Nassau-31, Petersburg-10, Pittstown-110, Plattsburgh-7, Poestenkill-10, Poughkeepsie-8, Rochester-17, Salem-16, Sand Lake-53, Saratoga-13, Schaghticoke-52, Stephentown-31, Schenectady-19, Schodack-9, Stillwater-8, Syracuse-7, Troy-1,309, Utica-18, Waterford-30, Watervliet-24 and West Troy-91. 2. There were a sizable number of records from the neighboring states of Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut and New Jersey. Connecticut has 50 records including 8 from New Haven , Massachusetts had 118 records including 21 from Boston, 10 from North Adams, 7 from Springfield and 21 from Pittsfield, Vermont had 77 including 5 records from Burlington and 7 from Bennington and New Jersey had 12 records including 5 from Newark. 3. For the New York City area, there were 9 records for Brooklyn and 149 records for New York City. 4. Residence was also indicated from the following states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. 5. Foreign countries listed as the place of residence were Canada, Denmark, England, Brazil, Italy, Scotland and Sweden. 6. At the time of the 1840 census, Troy, New York was the fourth wealthiest city in the USA on a per capita basis. This may account for the numerous individuals from across the United States coming to Troy to be married. E. List members may be interested in two other transcription projects of the Troy Irish Genealogy Society. Marriage and death records reported in 30 years of the Troy Daily Whig for the years 1849 to 1878 will be added to the TIGS website in the next few months along with over 4,000 records of interment in St. Mary's Cemetery in Troy. Regards, Bill McGrath TIGS Project Coordinator Clifton Park, NY

I am not sure if he was born in Butters, NY or Butternut, NY. It did say Butters on his Civil War records as his birthplace; however, that was transcribed; it could be an error. After talking with a genealogical person from Butters, they informed me its a small place and there are no Petersons left there. So I am leaning more towards Butternut.
