It's always interesting how people can always seem to find another way to look at a situation . . . The census reports after 1856 (when Hannah Butts Upham died) included Hannah Upham as the wife of Jared, so it was the same woman as in the 1850 census, and could not have been my ancestor. I'm still "hopeful" that others like yourself will find that missing bit of info I need to clear this up. Again, thanks for your time and assistance. I note that in the 1880 census he is living next door to a Joseph Upham age 37, who would match the son Joseph in the 1850 census when Hannah Butts Upham was still his wife. The Cooperstown Freeman Journal of Oct. 24, 1856, lists her death as: "Oct. 7, Mrs. Hannah Upham, Laurens, at res. of S.B. Miller." (according to Gertrude Barber's transcription). They were ever interested in all good works and faithful workers in the Baptist church of which Mr. Coats was for many years a deacon, and Mrs. Coats had made the unusual record of over seventy years a member. Deacon Coats died in 1883 and for a few years she remained in the old home, thn went to live with her daughter, mrs. Martha Colwell, where she has received every care that a devoted, conscientious daughter and grand-daughter could give to her. Beside her daughter, Mrs. Colwell, and grand-daughter, Florence, Mrs. Coats leaves ! a son, Martin B, residing with his family in Pittsville, Wis. I am fairly sure the author had been a camper at the Ethical Culture Camp, which was further north, on the eastern side of Lake Otsego. Having been a camper & counselor at Camp Otsego (sister camp of Camp Chenango), in the 1950s and early 1960s, I found the book and the experiences described, to be quite familiar. How fortunate we all were to have been able to spend two idyllic summer months, living on the shores of Lake Otsego. Our camp friendships continue to this day. It seems that someone was tryuing to resuscitate the place. A while ago a book (fiction) was published by a former camper about summer experiences at the place. Should anyone be interested, the book was reviewed in an issue of Kaatskill Life magazine and this is what appeared: COOPERSTOWN CHRONICLES: LOVE & OTHER CAMP GAMES, by Peter Rutkoff. Insightfully and delightfully told coming-of-age tales at a summer camp on Lake Otsego, near Cooperstown, New York. "This book examines, among other things, how children deal with loss and how they use activities like blowing the bugle or playing softball help them make sense of the world..."--KAATSKILL LIFE. 144 pages. Ah well. We lived in cleveland at the time and it was a big adventure for me to go on my own on the train. We all stayed iin tents then and it seemed very cool to me. I wonder if you are aware of any new camps taking up the chalice on the lake? Sincerely will spangler Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
