Re: At Rest in Unadilla I note that two bookstores are advertising Shirley Goerlich's book for sale online (for ca. $50): Baldwin's Book Barn in West Chester, PA -- info@bookbarn.com and Willis Monie here in Cooperstown, NY: -- wilmonie@wpe.com Hugh MacDougall Official Historian Village of Cooperstown 8 Lake Street, Cooperstown, NY 13326-1016 coophist@stny.rr.com
As Rene' has said - In "At Rest in Unadilla," the cemeteries are listed separately. There's other info in the book too, such as census info, veteran's info, and info on separate families. The book was written in 1987 by Shirley Goerlich and she publishes it herself I believe - She lives in the next town down from Unadilla - in Sidney. I have been watching for a copy to buy locally or on-line, but I have had little luck. They seem to be all taken. I use my local library and bring the book home. I scan the pages that I need and keep them for future reference. We are actually trying to connect with Shirley at this time about several of her books. Don't know if this helps as I am new to the list. but I will start of people & family names that everyone is asking about and will keep a watch for info! Laurene Unadilla, NY
Where can you get these books? i am really interested since most of my relatives are from these areas. Jo Anne/Austin,Tx
In her books, she lists each individual cemetery and any records or stones that she found. This is the only proof that I have found so far for the family in Otsego. Any advice? Does anyone know if there is a book or online list of the interments at Brookside Cemetery in Gilbertsville? I have "At Rest in Unadilla" and "Etched in Stone in Sidney" (Delaware Co.), both by Shirley Goerlich. They are marvelous resources. I am wondering if any material was published for Gilbertsville. PS This summer when school is out & I have time, I would be willing to do look ups in the two resources listed above. Thanks. Betty Shampang

And, please tell me if you run across any Alexander or Benjamin Butmans if you are walking the cemeteries in Otsego. I would be eternally grateful if someone would find them. Connie Beck
Late Spring, Summer and early Fall are the times we get out visiting cemeteries. If you are visiting a small rural cemetery, take along a pad and pencil and read the stones, since you are already there. It would help many others unable to get to Otsego County find their family info from the stones. Then send the reading to Jan Cortez to post to the Otsego County Website. Oh, and by the way, if you run across a stone reading for "Elinora/Elnore/Eleanor or any such first name and last name Preston" pretty please let me know as I still haven't located a stone for her in either Otsego or Delaware County. I know she died in the vicinity of Franklin-Oneonta in 1836, but Where, oh Where was my ggg grandma buried??????? Annette Campbell

Some time ago, someone wrote to this list and asked for information about the descendants of John Fox and Emmogene Rogers (Matilda DeForest, Harriet Fisk, John Fisk). We knew they had two sons who married sisters but that was about it. I now have access to the Heritage Quest censuses and have found a little more information about this family. However, I can't for the life of me remember who posed the question. So if that person is still on the list and has not found anything, write to me and I'll let you know what I found. Hello, I am new to this list. I made a search to see if others on this list might be researching the Washburn families that lived in Otsego County in the early years of 1800. I did not find a message as such. I am searching for descendants of Ebenezer, mainly the families of his son Miles, b. 1731, and Miles' son Miles, b. 1771. They lived in W. Exeter for the most part and some other small towns there. I am also interested in the Curtis family who might have had a daughter marry into this family. Some of this family moved on to Oswego County, NY and then on to OH, IN IL and IA and MN. I would like to communicate with anyone who has similiar ancestors. Thanks, Doris

Looking to make a connection - trying to find the parents of Pena/Penny Clark born about 1780, in NY who married Cornelius Myers. They had 3 children, Andrew, John and David (born 1822). David is my direct line born in Unadilla, Otsego County and he married Esther Hatch. I have much information on my Myers line but am stuck on the Clark line. Cornelius was probably born in Demark as I have him being naturalized in the Marine court in 1834. The papers did not give any additional information. I have the census information on Myers. I was hoping for some kind of marriage notice on Pena and Cornelius. (aren't we all) If anyone can help with my Clark line it would be greatly appreciated. The name Pena is listed in the family bible. I know this is not a lot of information to go on..... just hopeful that this might sound familiar to someone...any suggestions? Lindsey

Go to here: http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/announce.html#living Thanks! Read it. A good step in the right direction. But it doesn't solve the problem of people posting copyrighted material without permission. That is still going to be a dilemma. Nor does it address a zillion other sites, large and small, that do not remove material on living people. But it certainly is a help. Susan M. Another thought: I do not blame Rootsweb for allowing people to post information on living people -- or copyrighted material -- or whatever. They do not have time to inspect and edit every file. That would be an enormous task! It is entirely the fault of the persons doing the posting. I do think, however, that all of these sites -- Ancestry, Rootsweb, etc. -- should allow the person whose information is posted without permission to be the one to request it's removal -- rather than only being willing to remove it on the request of the poster -- which is what most of them do. This has been an interesting discussion. If nothing else, perhaps it will cause all of us to be much more careful. Sue Susan M. I've been following all of this discussion on copyright, privacy, etc. and wanted to jump in and say one thing. The best way to keep people from posting information on living people is not to give it to them. I'm always very careful about who gets information on those still living because people WILL publish the information that you give them even if you ask them not to. We all know this. I am in the process of preparing a genealogy for publication and have decided not to include living people. I don't believe I should include them without getting permission in writing from each one -- and that is just too big a job! Also, I have discovered, by asking a couple of people to remove information of mine that they posted, that on Ancestry.com what they need to do is ask Ancestry to remove their entire file. Then they must edit out the offending information and repost it. Maybe that will help some of you who want something removed from Ancestry. Sue Susan M.
