    1. [NYOTSEGO] Still Trying to find Baptismal Record; what next??
    2. I am still trying to find the baptismal record for my ancestor William James Winney, b. 11 Jun 1817, in Cherry Valley, Otsego Co., NY. I believe that there is only one church from the time of his birth that is left in Cherry Valley; I don't know the religion though I am fairly certain that it is not Catholic. It might be Dutch Reform or Church of England. Does anyone have an address, email or snailmail, for the next higher heirarchy for either church? William James's mother might have been Native American. What appears to be "odd" is that William James Winney left New York when he was in his early twenties; his immediate family doesn't show up in his next destination: Grant Co., Wisconsin, so we have wondered if his father might have died and left him the money to not only travel, but quickly buy land in Wisconsin at this young age-? Anyway, does anyone have a resource for how we can get William James Winney's baptismal record? (Especially if the church is defunct?) Many thanks. Kathleen LPurch6636@aol.com

John Irons 20010 10100 p. 20: Asa Irons 00011 20010 1810 Census, New York, Otsego County, Town of Hartwick p. 107 R Irons 10010 31111 p. 107 A Irons 41001 11010 p. 109 J Irons 00010 10100 1820 Census, New York, Otsego County, Town of Hartwick p. 142 Reuben Irons 301101 22020 0200 p. 146 Ruth Irons 110000 10010 0100 1830 Census, New York, Otsego County, Town of Hartwick p. 92 Reuben Irons 001200001 01101001 p. 92 Ruth Irons 000011 0001001 ----------------------------------------- Also one deed record: From Town of Hartwick Historical Society, "Hartwick: The Heart of Otsego County, NY" (Hartwick: Syl-la-bles Press, 2002), p. 30: Early deeds: 1794: William Cooper to Asa Irons, 25 ½ acres [in the Otsego Patent] [This, as I understand it, was one of a number of deeds given by William Cooper in what was then thought to be part of his Otsego Patent of 1786, but which turned out when properly surveyed to be in the northern part of the Hartwick Patent. Since William Cooper was also selling off the land in the Hartwick Patent, on behalf of John Christopher Hartwick, such sales were allowed to stand. -HCMacD] --------------------------------------- I also find one reference to the Irons group on-line, at: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/IRONS/2000-08/0966794931 "Looking for info on any of the following: Asa Irons b.1772 - married Ruth Reuben Irons b.1769 - married Silva b.1780 John Ambrose Irons (family tradition says he was born in CT) Asa (1772) and Reuben may be brothers Asa (1772) and John may be brothers or first cousins Asa Irons b.1813 - married Abigail Mariah Roberts b.1814 Charles Nelson Irons (son of John) b.1808 - married Sarah Wicks b.1808 Asa (1813) and John may have been 1st or 2nd cousins Henry S. Irons b1803(9) - married Andilla Phillips b.1812 Florilla Irons b.1811" ----------------------------- It seems to me almost certain that these Irons came from Glocester, Providence County, Rhode Island, where there are many early settlers named Irons. The 1790 includes a number with sons. Have you looked through Rhode Island materials. ---------------------------- Finally, the (Cooperstown) Otsego Herald, June 7, 1795, noted the following death: "June 4, at Bower's Patent, Mr. Jeremiah Irons, Sr., in 86th year." Bowers Patent was in what is the Town of Middlefield, just Northeast of Hartwick. --------------------------------- I hope this helps -- I don't know how much you know already, or what specifically you are looking for, but if you want to contact me directly or through the list I'll be happy to try to help. She married Samuel GOODE in 1846 in Coventry and they immigrated to Illinois sometime between 1862 and 1866. I don't know who the other members of her family were or if any of them also made it to the United States.
