I also have an ancestor who died along with three of his children. Mine was in 1806 in Connecticut. It is my understanding that this disease is caused when infected rat fleas contaminate fresh skin wounds or the flea bite site. Even though it isn't spread from person to person, I suppose it could be considered an epidomic it the problem were widespread. Perhaps something like the Junta Virus that caused so many deaths among Native Americans a few years ago.
My great-grandfather, John Keyes Campbell, was born 1797 in Cherry Valley. However, he went to Sandusky, Ohio, and died 1873 in Valparaiso, Indiana, so maybe he is not the same as your John Campbell. The parents of John Keyes Campbell were Benjamin Smith Campbell (1773-1852) and Sally Keyes (1778-1858). I am guessing that the name was misspelled in the censuses or something! He is not in any NY census spelled BUTMAN. ----------------- Here are a few ideas: 1. Substitute each of the other vowels for the U in BUTMAN. 2. Substitute each of the other vowels for the A in ALEXANDER. 3. Look for someone with A as a middle initial -- in case ALEXANDER was a middle name. 4. Consider the possibility that he didn't make it into the index you are using. Try an index by a different publisher. 5. Check the entire state of NY -- he may have been in a different county. 6. If none of those things work, consider the possibility that he was somehow missed by the US census taker in that year. Try other years and try the NY State census also. 7. Try land and tax records. 8. If you do all of this and he still doesn't turn up, it could be the father's name wasn't Alexander -- the person who gave the information on the death certificate may have been in error. Start looking for a father of a different name. I hope something here will help. Sue Susan M. My ancestor Abner Pier and 4 (maybe 5 of his children all died, from Nov 24 1810-Jan 15 1811. The term epidemic was used in Isaac K. Shelley - You might also re-send your e-mail to the Columbia Co list. My mother and father (b Oneonta) both grew up in Philmont, Columbia County, and I remember Mother talking about the Trasks who lived there. I haven't seen that name on the list, but who knows if there's a connection with your photos. There's an interesting tale about their mansion, called Yaddo or something similar, because their small daughter, who died young, couldn't pronounce Shadow! Cheers! Jean Chapman Snow
I've "rescued" a group of photographs including some belonging to the TRASK Family. The first photograph is of Florean TRASK HAMILTON taken at the Young Studio in Oneonta, New York. A note on the photograph states that it was taken before she married. I'm guessing that the photograph was taken in the 1880's and that she was in her 20's at the time. The second photograph is of "Grandmother TRASK" or Mrs. Loomis TRASK and was taken at the Hotchkiss Studio in Norwich, NY, dated 1890. I would guess that Grandmother TRASK was probably in her 60's at the time it was taken. A third photograph taken at this same studio in 1890 is identified as "Mom" and is that of an infant of about 1 year. A tin type photograph also included appears to be an earlier photograph of the woman identified as Grandmother TRASK or Mrs. Loomis TRASK along with another young woman maybe a sister. A fifth photograph is of an unidentified male, probably in his 20's taken at the same studio in Oneonta, NY as the photograph of Florean TRASK HAMILTON. Based on limited research I was able to find Abdel Loomis TRASK b. 1834 at Otego, NY and his wife Mary Jane FINCH age 45 living in Otsego, NY during the 1880 census along with their daughter Florean or Florence Deborah TRASK b. 28 Sept 1859 at Otego, NY. All were said to be NY born as were all of their parents. Florean married Charles HAMILTON on the 5th of October 1887. Other photographs recovered from the same source belong to the CHASE, HENDRICK, SLOAN, HAYNES, HAMILTON, BURDICK, BARBER, and MASTIN Families from Unadilla, NY; Walton, NY; and Glen Falls, NY; I'm hoping to locate someone from this TRASK Family so that these wonderful old photographs can be returned to the care of family. If you are a member of this family or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
Found in my grandmother Irons's notes: Children of Reuben and Dorcas Irons 1. Levi 2. Emer 3. James 4. Stephan 5. Orlando 6. Reuben 7. John F 8. Abagail 9. Clarissa 10. Phoebe I believe that #7 John F was my great great grandfather. This family may have lived in Otsego County NY, as the census of NY for 1800 and 1810 showed virtually all Ironses in NY living in that county, and my John F was born in 1811, and married a woman in Hartwick, Otsego County, in 1834. Any information on any member of this family greatly appreciated. I have over 2,500 IRONSes in my database, plus over 500 whose mother's maiden name was IRONS, and am very willing to share and to help connect IRONS family groups. I just can't find any trace of the mother of Elizabeth Northup. I know she must have been born ca. 1807-10 in Delaware County, NY. She married probably 1830-32 Emanuel Northup b. 1807 West Oneonta and died 1870 and is buried in Oneonta with his second wife whom he married in December 1836. His first wife was ELINORA PRESTON and according to her daughter Elizabeth Northup, Buell, Gillet's death certificate, her mother was born in Delaware Co, NY. I need to find someone who can claim Elinora/Elnore/Eleanor, or even Ella or Ellen or Nora PRESTON. Anyone??????
I am still *stuck* at finding the parents and siblings of William James Winney, b. 1817, Cherry Valley, Otsego County, NY. I have found several addresses for churches at that time--most of them having records elsewhere because the church has passed into oblivion. I figured that finding his baptismal record would give me a real leg up. I just still can't find anything so far. In later life, W.J. Winney was a strict, teetotaling Methodist; I don't know what his parents were, religion-wise. And W.J. Winney *seemed* to come alone to Grant County, Wisconsin when he was 22 years old. At least his marriage record has him in Wisconsin and he was a constable in Grant County and he is buried in Grant Co., Wisconsin. His obituary doesn't say anything about his life in New York. There are several adult male Winney's living in Cherry Valley when William was born but there are also neighborhood areas where there are "Winney's" too. How do I separate them to figure out which is my family? Are there any sources besides Census Records that would tell me more information about the Winney's in this area? Many thanks. This is definitely a brick wall for me. Kathleen LPurch6636@aol.com

Has anyone any information on my end of the line ALEXANDER BUTMAN, b ca l800 in CT, who resided in Otsego County?
Hello all - I just signed up on the lists for Schoharie and Otsego counties because I think I may have traced my family back to here and am hoping somebody can give me some pointers on where I can look for some good hard proof on people who lived here at the close of the 1700's and the early 1800s..... I specifically am looking for information on..... THOMAS GLOVER - who lived in Sharon, Schoharie Co. Cutter's genealogy says that Thomas had three sons, Henry, John and Jacob, and four daughters. I believe that one of the daughters may have been my ggg-grandmother Jane Glover Seelye born btwn 1800-1805. JOHN and HANNAH SEELYE - who lived in Worcestor/Decatur, Otsego Co. John looks like the best candidate to have been the father of WILLIAM SEELYE b. 1799. ISAAC SEELYE, Esq. of Cherry Valley also had a son named William, but it appears from census records that this son might be too young, and possibly died at a young age. My William married Jane Glover in the early 1820's and settled in Cortland Co, NY along with Henry and John Glover and their families. William Seelye was afflicted with amaurosia (blindness from disease of optic nerve) and stated on a census record that he had one brother and one sister who were also afflicted. HAINES family - who I just found in Sharon, Schoharie. My ggg-grandfather was Henry Haines, born @ 1808. Henry also lived in Cortland Co NY in 1830, then moved to Potter Co, PA in 1842, and on to Cameron/Elk Co PA sometime in the 1850's. Henry and wife Keziah had about eight children (seven confirmed, one suspected) who all stuck together and moved as a family group. One daughter, Rebecca b. 1831, married Simeon Seelye b. 1826, quite certainly the son of William and Jane Glover Seelye. Another daughter, Henrietta b. 1835, married Charnick Glover b. 1832, who is likely the son of either Henry or John Glover. Also found in Elk/Cameron Co is Charles Glover b. 1843, proven son of John Glover and well known to both Charnick Glover and Simeon Seelye as they were witnesses on each other's Civil War pension claims and are all buried together in the Glover family cemetery. I am greatful for any and all information on these families or any advice on finding records from the 1790-1830 timeframe in Schoharie and Otsego counties. Thank you Laura Bent
