Listers, in connection with my offer to do will lookups in Gertrude Barbers "Abstracts of Otsego County Wills, 1794-1850", I neglected to point out that an index to wills in that book is posted at http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyotsego/barberindex.htm You can check there first to see if a will abstract exists in that book, then contact me if you find it. If it's in that index...I'll post the details of the abstract on this list, but if it's not in that index...I have nothing to offer you. Marty Irons
I have tried a number of times to contact her by e-mail - it hasn't worked in ages. Have also tried calling her a very few times to make arrangements to see her re: Family History , but have never been able to touch base. Listers, Once again I will offer, FOR A LIMITED TIME, lookups in Gertrude Barber's 5-volume "Abstracts of Wills in Otsego County NY from 1794-1850". Please read ALL of the instructions below, or I may not be able or willing to help you. .... Only one request per message. .... Send your requests direct to me - I will answer via the Otsego list if found; direct to you if not found. (this keeps the list from being unnecessarily cluttered) .... Keep your messages as short as possible. .... Use as your subject "Otsego will 1829 ALLEN, Theodorus". ( (substitute year of death and deceased's name). .... Deaths must have been between 1794 and 1850 - no exceptions. .... You do not need a message, as the subject tells me all I need to find a will (or confirm that it is not in this book). Sorry, but I won't answer any general requests such as "any Thompson in Otsego County 1830-1840". Specific requests for year, surname and first name only, please, as general searches take too much time. Note that the Otsego County Surrogate Court has many wills that Miss Barber did not include in these books. I do not live in Otsego County NY, and do not have access to original papers of that area...just Miss Barber's abstracts. I will repeat this message on NYOTSEGO-L once a week through the end of September for the benefit of those who come in after my first posting. This offer expires midnight September 30th, 2004. Hopefully another volunteer will pick up after that. Marty Irons for private responses, click on: mailto:k2mi@frontiernet.net All e-mail scanned by Norton 2003, updated online daily. May all your ancestors YELL at you, telling you how and where to find them. PS: John F Irons (1811-1854 Cazenovia NY)... please yell louder.

I've "rescued" an old photograph of Brice SLOAN and Mamie HAYNES which was taken on the occasion of their wedding sometime in 1911 or 1912. The photograph does not include a photographer's name or location, however, it was recovered with photographs from Norwich, NY; Glens Falls, NY; Walton, NY; Unadilla, NY; and Oneonta, NY; An additional note on the back of the photograph reads "A Friend of Mom's" leading me to believe that the couple is related to those in the other photographs. Thanks to the assistance of a researcher I do know a bit more about the couple. Their son John B. SLOAN b. 20 Sept 1919 in Butternuts, NY, lived most of his life in Gilbertsville, NY and died 1st April 2003. At the time of his death he was survived by his wife Beulah SLOAN, a sister Ada SLOAN or Orlando, Florida, a daughter and son-in-law Sandra & Bernt HANSEN of Zephyrhills, FL, a son and daughter-in-law Dan & Mary SLOAN of Gilbertsville, NY, a son and daughter-in-law Steve & Myra SLOAN of Gilbertsville. Another child of Brice & Mamie, Bill SLOAN died prior to John's death. The 1930 census records list the family with Mamie referred to as "Mildred". John's obit lists his Mother's maiden name as HAINES, so the spelling may also be slightly different than what appears on the photograph I have in my possession. I'm hoping to locate someone from this family so that the photograph can be returned to their family. If you are a member of this family or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
I've "rescued" a group of photographs including four which all appear to belong to the CHASE Family of New York. The first is a photograph identified as Horace CHASE which was taken at the Wheeler Studio in Unadilla, NY. The photograph was probably taken in the 1870's or 1880's with Horace appearing to be in his teens at the time. A note on the back of the photograph notes that Horace drowned at the age of 18 and was the nephew of Deane's Grandmother. The other three photographs are not identified however, the second and third photographs are taken at the same studio in Unadilla, NY and appear to be a sister and possible father of Horace. Based on limited research I believe that Horace CHASE was the son of Hosea & Mary CHASE who were living in Hartwick, NY during the 1880 census along with Horace age 5 and another son Fred age 3 months. The census records note that they were all born in NY with Mary's parents both born in England and Hosea's parents also both born in New York. The fourth photograph is of a young girl taken at the Simpkins Studio in Walton, NY. All three photographs appear to have been taken in the 1870's or 1880's with the girls looking to be in their early teens and the man probably in his 40's. In addition to these photographs others were also recovered from the same source including photographs belonging to the TRASK, HAMILTON, HENDRICK, SLOAN, HAYNES, BURDICK, BARBER, and MASTIN families from Norwich, NY; Oneonta, NY; and Glen Falls, NY; I'm hoping to locate someone from this CHASE Family so that these wonderful old photographs can be returned to family. If you are a member of this family or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

Carol: Like your Pier family, our Pierce family came from Berkshire Co., MA to Fitch Hill near Pierstown above Fly Creek, Otsego Co., NY. In the family Bible, Levi Pierce said his brother, Daniel, "married and raised a family and died of the black janlers." I had always assumed this happened in Berkshire, MA, but perhaps, especially if he had already raised his family, it occurred in Otsego Co. I was never sure what disease the 'black janlers' was, typhus, cholera, or blackwater fever (Black jaundice), a type of malaria. Although the color of jaundice is usually yellow but it can range to olive-bronze or green-black giving rise to "black jaundice". Levi gives no clue as to the date of his brother's death, but I'll look a little more closely at the time frame you have provided. Thanks. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! I have been noticing lately that several recent posters have ancestors who were born in Cherry Valley, Otsego Co., NY at the turn of the century, ca. 1800. I would appreciate it if you would keep your eye out for my ancestor b. in Cherry Valley in 1821 or 1817; his name was William James (W.J.) Winney. I will keep a list of your names as I do my own research and contact you if I see anything. However, he went to Sandusky, Ohio, and died 1873 in Valparaiso, Indiana, so maybe he is not the same as your John Campbell. The parents of John Keyes Campbell were Benjamin Smith Campbell (1773-1852) and Sally Keyes (1778-1858). George Campbell
