Now banks and other places often tell you to make up a word with both letters and numbers, which makes it even harder to steal or attempt to steal. Not that I have enough to be worth stealing!! 3. What's with the "G-d"? Are you having a problem with your "o" key? --- Dennis -----Original Message----- From: Peggy J Knox [mailto:powerchairwoman@juno.com] Sent: Tuesday, August 24, 2004 10:48 PM To: NYOTSEGO-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [NYOTSEGO] Thanksgiving There was no set annual Thanksgiving until it was established in the middle of the Civil War. However, from the time the Pilgrims landed up to the establishment of a national day of Thanksgiving in November, there were days declared to be days of Thanksgiving for special events that were considered special blessings and recognition from G-d such as the end of an epidemic; a war; escaping death of a weather event, etc. Although not nearly as observant as those in the 17th and 18th century, religion was much more central with days of fasting, days of Thanksgiving, etc. No one was excused, as they were not excused from Sunday service. Although there were changes happening, especially after the Revolution, Protestantism which is what we are talking about when we discuss early 19th century religion. In a couple decades, the new religious revivals would be taking place in upstate New York. I know I've skipped a lot of detail, but I'm doing this from memory. I do hope this brief explanation helps. The response to my offer to post abstracts of wills from Gertrude Barber's 5-volume series has been sort of overwhelming...more requests than I anticipated. 95 requests; 79 abstracts sent in 8 days. A few were not in the book; a few were repeat requests. At the end of this message you will see those which have been posted, and the date and subject. 2. I only have minute, but wanted to say this... You should never give your mother's maiden name to a financial institution or business. You do not have to. You can say you would rather not and tell them that you will be happy to give them a code word in some other category. Susan M. 3. I don't want to run this subject into the ground but another thought occurred to me. Do you recall that certain financial institutions have asked you for your mother's maiden name? Now with those names often appearing on genealogies on the Internet that info is no longer obscure. How many people seeking to illegally access an account would have known your mother's maiden name prior to the 'Net.? Few, I surmise, other than very close friends or relatives. I will no longer give any organization my mother's maiden name as a clue to my own identity.
