Listers, Once again I will offer, FOR A LIMITED TIME, lookups in Gertrude Barber's 5-volume "Abstracts of Wills in Otsego County NY from 1794-1850". This offer expires midnight September 30th, 2004. Hopefully another volunteer will pick up after that. Please read ALL of the instructions below, or I may not be able or willing to help you. The index to Otsego County will abstracts can be found at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyotsego/barberindex.htm PLEASE check the above index, because if the name you seek is not in this index, I have nothing to offer. As of 28 August I had already posted 90 will abstracts to nyotsego-l. If you missed the one you want, it might be available on the rootsweb archives: To find a will abstract in the nyotsego archives, select the appropriate year and month, then search on http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/nyotsego/2004-08 August The same format will work for any other year and month. You will see the subjects and sender's name for every message archived during that year and month If you find the right name and year on the index, but do not find the abstract in the archives, send me a request. Please observe the following: .... Only one request per message. .... Send your requests direct to me - I will answer via the Otsego list if found; direct to you if not found. (this keeps the list from being unnecessarily cluttered) mailto:k2mi@frontiernet.net .... Keep your messages as short as possible. .... Deaths must have been between 1794 and 1850 - no exceptions. .... Please use the following format for your subject: POTTER, Caleb - died 1846 or POTTER, Caleb - will probated 1846 .... It helps me if you "cut and paste" the line from the index into your message, so I can go directly to the volume and page in Miss Barber's book. .... Sorry, but I won't answer any general requests such as "any Thompson in Otsego County 1830-1840". Specific requests for year, surname and first name only, please, as general searches take far too much time. I do not live in Otsego County NY, and do not have access to original papers of that area...just Miss Barber's abstracts. I will repeat this message on NYOTSEGO-L once a week through the end of September for the benefit of those who come in after my first posting. Marty Irons

Hi, Seth Allen and Joseph Allen were early settlers in Otsego Co. Does anyone know if there was any relationship between these two men? Or can anyone tell me anything about their family? They are both in Richfield in 1787. Thanks for any reply. Carol

Listers, Since August 16th I have posted 85 will abstracts to nyotsego-l. It is time-consuming to post the same abstract over and over, so if it has already been posted, I'll let you know the date and time, and you can easily retrieve it from the archives. To find a will abstract in the nyotsego archives, select the appropriate year and month, then search on http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/nyotsego/2004-08 August The same format will work for any other year and month. You will see the subjects and sender's name for every message archived during that year and month. After you have reached the beginning of that year and month, you might be tempted to use the Ancestry.com quick search at the top of the screen. Do NOT use that function! Use the find command (Ctrl/f). Enter the surname, firstname (ex: Hall, Benjamin) or just the surname, followed by a comma (ex: Hall,). There may be more than one message for that surname, so keep clicking on "find" until you find the one you seek or there are no more to be found. When you find the message you seek, click on it and the entire message will appear. Good luck. I hope these abstacts are helpful to those who requested them, and to others. So it's just from my vantage point that I see the death of her 21-yr old son on Nov 24 and then the death of her husband on Christmas eve (which they did celebrate, I'm sure), and then a daughter on New Year's Eve, even more touching. "G-d" is a way of typing the word "god" used by many jews and perhaps other religions (I'm not sure). It has to do with religious rules about the destruction of the word once it is written (ie. you are not supposed to destroy a piece of paper, writing, etc that has the word "god" written on it), at least that's my understanding. It's actually a fairly common thing in email. I think many people have picked it up as a generic way to type it, as in cyberspace you can have no idea of who you are speaking to. It worked though, clearly you understood what the word was without the "o" Erin M Ballantine Sound Designer - Technician - Electrician www.BallantinePC.com ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dennis Gorman" <dhgorman@frontiernet.net> To: <NYOTSEGO-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, August 24, 2004 10:03 PM Subject: RE: [NYOTSEGO] Thanksgiving > What's with the "G-d"?
