Jean Chapman Snow There are several accounts of the Masonic Order in Cooperstown, whose Otsego Lodge No. 138 dates from 1796, e.g., Albert T. Van Horne, "History of Freemasonry, embracing Otsego Lodge No. 138, F. & A.M. Otsego Chapter Nov. 26, R.A.M. 1896 to 1906." Cooperstown: Christ, Scott & Parshall, March 1st 1906 [includes summary of early history of Cooperstown Lodge. No reference to Piers or Chapmans in its lists for the 1896-1906 period.] There are also several articles on early Cooperstown Masonic history in Wilber E. Bresee, "Trails From the East, West and South" Oneonta: Wilmer E. Bresee, 1963, and in "Masonic Trails of Early New York", Transactions of the American Lodge of Research, Vol, XV, No. 1, 1981 ("The Wilmer E., Bresee Edition"). However your best bet may be to contact the Secretary of the Otsego Lodge itself -- its website with addresses is: http://www.osmasonry.net/lodges/otsego/otsego.htm They have complete records of the Lodge. The Otsego Herald of December 29, 1810, had the following obituary for Abner Pier: "Died, in this town on Monday the 24th inst. of a typahs [sic] fever, Mr. ABNER PIER in the 49th year of his age. Mr. P. was one of those men who in the trying times of our revolution, bravely stepped forward in defence of his country: and there were but few who suffered more in those perilous times than he did. He was taken by a party of Tories and Indians, and in the most barbarous manner tomahawked, scalped and after all SHOT! and left upon the ground for dead. He lay in such a position that the musket ball passed through a part of his head, twice through one of his arms, and once or twice through one of his legs. To the astonishment of all who were knowing to the circumstances he recovered. He has uniformly supported the character of an upright, honest & intelligible man. His obsequies were attended on the 26th by his Masonic brethren of this vicinity -- who, together with his numerous relatives and acquaintances, formed the largest procession ever witness in this county on a like occasion. -- He has left a disconsolate widow and a number of children to mourn their loss." My 3x gr-grandfather, Abner Pier, who died in 1810, was given a Masonic funeral, and I know my grandfather, Edwin Pier Chapman, b in Cooperstown was also a Mason (I don't know if he joined in Cooperstown, Oneonta or Philmont, Columbia Co). I'm not sure that Edwin Pier's father, Daniel W. Chapman was a Mason, though, as I seem to remember something and IOOF for him (would have to check that). A visit to one of the following sites will usually help you find that "spot on the road." _http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnis/web_query.gnis_web_query_form_ (http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnis/web_query.gnis_web_query_form) _http://www.mapquest.com_ (http://www.mapquest.com/) _http://www.topozone.com_ (http://www.topozone.com/) Most people speed right through these spots on their way to somewhere else. I, for one, refuse to buy a map that does not show my favorite "spot on the road," Burlington (Green), NY. It, like many other spots, has a long history. David Shillieto in his essay, "History of Burlington Green" which was published in Town of Burlington, 'Then and Now', states, "The Green or Yankeetown soon became one of the busiest crossroads in Central New York." This was in the late 1700s. When you travel west on Route 80 from Route 28 or Route 105, slow down and show respect for the citizens of this "spot on the road." The old cemetery on the right just before you cross the intersection may contain the graves of some of your ancestors who died in the early 1800s. This cemetery is not listed on the map of Otsego County cemeteries. I have access to a list of the people interred in this cemetery and would be glad to do a "look up' for a lister. If so I can attachment the page I got in Onondaga of the Samuel Ellis family I have. Hi Jerry, Thank you for sending this. I will contact her and get her a picture. Elaine
Dear Hugh, I can't tell you how much I appreciate the reply you put on the internet. You are very kind to take the time to look up the Ellis family. They sure have been hard for me to find. I have a typed out page that I got from Onondaga County in New York in 2003. It has Samuel and all of his children on it. The lady that took it there must have thought that they came from Onondaga county, because it says that Samuel passed away at the home of his son {don't know which one}in Dewitt, in Onondaga county, New York. It {the Page} was reportedly taken from the family Bible. I think the Elonzo Ellis on that sheet is my great-great-grandfather. He left New York at some point and moved to Michigan. He married a Phebe {don't know her last name and I don't know when or where they got married}. I have not been able to find Elonzo or Phebe on any census records for New York only on the 1850 census records of Michigan. Later some time between 1850 and 1870 they moved on to Iowa. That is where I am from, but no longer live there. I would like to add that I have find you New York folks to be very helpful and very friendly. Thank again for all your help, you are a very kind person. Marilyn {Ellis} Sage
Dear Hugh: The Christopher ELLIS whose newspaper item you posted was my ggg grandfather whom I mentioned to Marilyn (who posted a message about her Samuel ELLIS), and Jonah (Jonas) and Ferdinand were his sons. Thank you very much for posting these notices. I would be very interested in anything else you have about ELLIS. Jayne perllan987@aol.com

Lone Rock; was born in Burlington, Otsego Co., N. Y., March 22, 1815. He married, in his native county, Miss Rachel Brooks; she was born in England; they came to Wisconsin in 1851, and settled in the town of Bear Creek, Sauk Co., which has been their home since; they have two children--C. D. Johnson, an enterprising and energetic young man, and Miss Lucy J. In early life, Mr. Johnson followed school-teaching, and taught school several years in his native county; he manufactured the first cheese in the town of Bear Creek, a business he was engaged in several years. He owns 280 acres of land; his farm is desirably located and is finely improved; his residence was erected in 1878, and is one of the finest buildings in the southern portion of Sauk Co. Some more material (possibly familiar) on the Ellis line is included below. My supposition (and it is only that) is that Stephen Ellis of Yates county is the son of Samuel Ellis of New Lisbon, Otsego County. And that Samuel Ellis of New Lisbon is the son of Gideon Ellis, the long-lived Ellis of Aurelius, Cayuga County. My guess would be that in his old age Gideon lived next door to his son Samuel in New Lisbon in 1820, but then moved back to Aurelius, and ended his life with son Harvey. His widow (2nd wife, Esther) seems to have stayed in Aurelius, and the young Samuel Cole living with her might be a descendant (at least one Ellis married a Cole). All supposition, but might suggest some further leads. Ruth Lewis, b about 1920-22, daughter of George Lewis, farmer, and Flaud Southard. Groege fell down a haychute and suffered several months, then died. They lived in or around Otego, NY. Flaud had three brothers, Ralph (my Grandfather), Arthur and Harold, all children of DeWitt Southard and Agnes Face. I would like to find Cousin Ruth or whatever is known about her. Dear Marilyn: It seems that you are in the same position as I am. My ggg grandfather, Christopher ELLIS, came to Milford, Otsego Co., NY, from RI, about 1800 and married Wealthy PERRY. He was about 17 or 18 years of age and she was 16 years of age; they had a big famly. I don't know whether Christopher came alone or with others in his family. They lived in Milford all their lives, Christopher going to Middletown to live with his married daughter only near the end of his life, his wife Wealthy having died some years before. I have not been able to find Christopher's family or his ancestors in RI. But I do have a lot of information about him after he came to NYS. You do not say where in Otsego Co your Samuel ELLIS lived. There were other ELLISes in Milford, Otsego Co, at the time my Christopher lived there, and I had the same idea you have, to try to tie them to my Christopher, but I have not succeeded so far. My Christopher seems to have been close to his father-in-law, Jonas PERRY of Hartwick, Otsego County. Several years ago someone at the NYS Library in Cooperstown sent me pages photocopied from the Milford Annual Town Meetings in the early 1800s. Besides my Christopher, there were a David, a William, and a Charles--no Samuel. The meetings for which I have pages took place from 1815 to 1838. I don't imagine that any of this is helpful, but you never know. Jayne perllan987@aol.com
Dear Jayne, Thank You so much for your reply. It sure can be sad when you look and look and can't find a thing. I believe my Samuel lived in New Lisbon in Otsego county. He had one son Stephen R. H. that moved to Dundee/Starkey in Yates County at some point. We were in the state of New York in October and we went to Dundee/Starkey and that is when I found out that Stephen was born in Otsego county. We didn't get to go to Otsego as it was at the end of our trip at that point. I have seen the name Christopher in my search. I have been thinking maybe Samuel may have came from RI too, because according to what I have found his wife Mary was born in RI. We took alot of pictures of gravestone of ELLIS around Monroe and different counties around there. My hushand's one son lives in Monroe county. Keep in touch if you would like and maybe we can help each other. Thanks again, Marilyn Perllan987@aol.com wrote: >Dear Marilyn: > >It seems that you are in the same position as I am.
