    1. Re Burial of Penelope Chapman

    3. --=======11817AD4======= Content-Type: text/plain; x-avg-checked=avg-ok-54213EF4; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Hugh - You are a treasure! I'm delighted to have the information about the Universalist burial ground, though I'm afraid the information in the Shirlee S. Ratbone and Cathy A. Rose, "A Collection of Epitaphs" is incorrect. I have the Bibles, and the only children of Zenas and Penelope were Nancy, b 1812, who m Ira Tanner; Daniel W, b 1817 (my great-grandfather, who m Nancy Pier);and Randall Chapman born 1814. Is that book available for sale? I'd like to have a copy. It is Randall's line which has been confused in several genealogies (Westcott as well as others). He m Eunice Gibbs 7 Feb 1836 in Cooperstown. They had 3 children: Emeline, b 1836, John, b 1840,and Evander, b 1842. Emeline died, and she may be the one mis-called Eliza and buried (I'm guessing it was in Cooperstown, and Eunice may have been buried there as well. Randall was appointed Path Master (Otsego Town Meeting, 1839), and at the 1840 census was still in Otsego, living next door to father Zenas. In 1855 he moved to Livingston County (perhaps after the death of Eunice??) and lived next door to his brother-in-law, Evander Gibbs. About 1866 (after Randall's son John returned from the Civil War), Randall and his two sons moved to Macomb MI, where they lived, Randall remarried, is buried. And in 1900 John moved to Everett WA (and is probably buried there- I haven't checked). So that John and Eliza Chapman are a mystery. It may be that the latter name is not Eliza, but Emeline, Randall's daughter. Gertrude Barber's original mss at NYSHA (not the Hawaii 1993 reprint by Martha and Wm Reamy) says: Vol 2, p 54: "Emeline Chapman, only daughter of Randall Chapman 14 years, Otsego." (I'm checking my Palm for the info, and I don't have the death date written, but it's given as Nov 5 1850 in the Reamy book. One connection that makes me curious is the mention of Bates. I suspect that Zenas' son Jabez (from Zenas' first marriage to Anna Randall) married a Bates. They were neighbors, and Jabez and wife Olive ___ named their son, b 1827, Charles Bates Chapman. Hmm. A connection? Jabez also had a dau, Ann Eliza, but she married a Philip Northrup and they ended in Girard, Erie County, PA, where Jabez joined them (no doubt after the death of his wife). Jabez died there at the ripe old age of 100 yrs, 3 mos and 16 days! Thanks for the info, and I hope I haven't overwhelmed you with mine. 3. A few months ago I had occasion to research the fate of the Universalist Cemetery, and came up with the following message sent to an inquirer: ------- I checked out the Florence Ward file at NYSHA, and to my delight immediately found a memorandum prepared in 1963 by the NYSHA Librarian (Dorothy Barck) on "Cemetery of the Second Universalist Society of Otsego, Beaver Street, Cooperstown, N.Y." from which I learned that: "The burying ground on Beaver Street, Cooperstown, was used for interments by the Second Universalist Society of Otsego during the latter half of the 19th century. In the early decades of the 20th century, bodies were gradually removed by kinsfolk to other cemeteries, and the few remaining in 1936 by the Society itself prior to the sale of the empty acre in 1937." The memorandum goes on to cite numerous details about the cemetery and its closing. It seems that the few remaining bodies were in 1936 transferred (by Ralph W. Ellsworth) to a lot purchased for the purpose in the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery. In 1937, after getting a permit for sale from the Otsego County Court, the Universalist Society (which occupied what has recently been called "Toad Hall" on Pioneer and Church Streets), sold the now vacant cemetery lot to Deuel C. Lake of Oneonta, who in turn sold it to Moses Lippitt, who sold it to Stephen C. Clark in 1943. It is now, as you surmised, converted into a parking lot for the Hospital, next to Bassett Hall. ---------------- I note that two children of Penelope and Zenus Chapman, John and Eliza, are buried in the Bates/Chapman cemetery in the Fly Creek Valley. (Shirlee S. Ratbone and Cathy A. Rose, "A Collection of Epitaphs, Family Plots, and Small Cemeteries in The Town of Otsego" (2004), p. 13. They show a none-too-legible photograph of the children's tombstone. The Freeman's Journal of June 15, 1855 noted the following death: "June 8, Zenas Chapman, in 86th yr., Cooperstown, res. T. of Otsego 54 yrs." I don't find any newspaper record of Penelope's death. The Fly Creek Valley Cemetery (http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyotsego/fcvc.html) has lots of Chapmans, but not Zenas or Penelope. I'm afraid that's all I come up with at the moment. My great-great-grandmother, Penelope Westcott Chapman (widow of Zenas) died in 1862 in Cooperstown. I'm pretty sure they were Universalists (they were m by the Universalist minister) and according to Christ (Episcopal) Church Records: "6/14/1863 Mrs. Chapman buried on Universalist Grounds." But Penelope died 1862, according to a 1973 letter (to someone else) from Juno Purvis, County Clerk. I also checked, and found the Universalist Burying Grounds were moved (as I remember, when Mary Bridge Hospital was built) but I couldn't find when or to what place. Please keep me in mind when and if you find any early burial records! I tried to get them to let me compile their records on computer just befoer Jim Hurley sold her the funeral home but she saidi they were going to have an "intern" do it but that she would share the info with me when it was done. I haven't gotten around to contacting her again. The intern had some other things to do first....like making the home handicapped accessible so I don't know if they got the records done or not. I want to contact her but guess I'm afraid that either it hasn't been done or that she will not share the info with me. I found a notice in an old newspaper that McCrum had over 4000 (I think) burial records or at least the largest in the area and McCrums & Lewises were related so his records ended up at Lewis'. It's possible that they have records of deaths that can't be found anywhere else as the Oneonta paper didn't start until 1853. I must take my courage in hand and go down and see her personally and beg on bended knee for access to those old burial records. At the time I talked to them, Jim said anything less than 50 years old, was accessible which was fine with me. I'm hoping to access the old records and not only find deaths but burial places and maaybe even more wonderful, parents listed. I know that Bookhout has parents listed in their records but then they only started in 1929 when McCrum was around long before that. Hope you have a wonderful year, too. KENYON, died May 15th, 1878, aged eighteen years and twenty-seven days. She was always frail, yet the struggle between life and death was long and her sufferings great. If the untiring attention of loving friends could have lured her back to health, her presence would still enliven the home now made desolate by her departure. She was her mother's comfort and the joy and pride of her father and brothers; and yet one came with a love so pure and strong, that he took foremost place in her affections. But the bride of five short months is taken from his embrace; and early in life he drinks of that bitter cup of whose dregs none know but those who have been called to drain it. The funeral services were attended by Rev. A. J. Cook, at the Baptist church, which was filled with sympathizing friends, and surrounded by the freshness and beauty of this springtime; with tears they laid that precious body away to rest. The years may come and go, and life's duties press heavily upon those left behind, but in their hearts will be a place ever sacred to the memory of the gentle loving one, who has gone from their midst. Mount Vision, June 7th, 1878. 6/21/1878 MARRIED At Unadilla, June 13, by Rev. L. M. Purington, A. W. BANKER, of Gt. Bend, Pa., and Mrs. Mary E. BUTLER, of Unadilla. In Cooperstown, June 13th, Orra PEABODY, in the 79th year of his age. 6/23/1878 TIMOTHY SABIN. Another of the pioneers of Oneonta has died. During the night of June 24th, the spirit of Timothy Sabin took its flight, just how and at what hour, God only knows. The evening before he was in usual health, and Tuesday morning dead. From the appearance of his features and body when discovered, it was evident that he died without a struggle. His lite went out, yielding to the circumstances of old age and a finished course. Timothy Sabin was born at Pauling, Dutchess co., in 1803, and was consequently 75 years of age. In 1822 he married Willmet VAN DYKE, of Mayfield, in this State. She died May 17, 1827, aged 22 years. February 14th, 1828, he married Harriet MANN, daughter of Daniel Mann, of Franklin. She died June 15, 1865. During his early residence here, and for a few years in Davenport, Mr. Sabin pursued the avocations of farmer, clerk, hotel-keeper and merchant. In 1842 he retired from the mercantile business, and from that date until about 1875, conducted an extensive commission business, his son, Egbert R., being a partner during considerable of the time. Mr. Sabin built the store now owned by George REYNOLDS, and one or two houses. He was more instrumental than any other Oneonta person, excepting only the late E. R. FORD, in promoting the Albany and Susquehanna Railroad project. Although never holding any official connection, his energy, good management and encouragment had much to do with its building. Mr. Sabin was converted under the ministrations of Rev. Augustus LITTLEJOHN, became a member of the Presbyterian church in 1833, and was made an Elder two years later, which position he held until some eighteen months ago, at that time, of choice, becoming merely honorary. In church, Mr. Sabin has been a zealous worker, and as a Christian gentleman, prayerful and constant in religious duties. In the esteem of his neighbors and fellow-townsmen, Timothy Sabin might properly have been regarded our first citizen. During the years of his strength, he was with the first in everything that pertained to the welfare and prosperity of his town. Without a particle of selfishness, he devoted time, work and money to promote public enterprises, and Oneonta is the better and more prosperous because of his living in it. His exalted Christian character, his charity, his kindness, his devotion to all things good, made him a man to be missed by those who cherish Christianity, a high condition of public morality, and good order. His name will ever be associated with the noblest of our dead, and it is strange indeed if there are not those yet living who are endeavoring to emulate his virtues, and are pressing on to a better life because of his example. (Timothy Sabin is buried in Riverside Cem. in Oneonta) 6/28/1878 MARRIED > In Unadilla, at the M. E. parsonage, June 20th, by Rev. J. W. Mevis, James O. 3. I will be send 4 emails through the list with Marriage & Death Notices from the Oneonta Herald & Democrat to complete the year 1878 of which Jan.-May is posted on the Otsego Co. web page. Jan will post them to the web page when time permits. After 1878 is finished, I will periodically, as I get them done, send emails starting with Jan. 2, 1874 to begin to fill in the gap between 1874 and 1878. Most of these notices are usually just one or two liners but hopefully someone will find someone they are looking for. Sandy Goodspeed, Maryland, NY
