Re The Winney family of Fly Creek, 1800's I am seeking the Winney (sometimes spelled Winne) family of Fly Creek and the 10 mile surrounding area, NY. I am particularly seeking William James Winney (1821 Otsego Co - 1881 WI); he left NY for WI ca 1842. There is a possibility that he married and had children in the midwest, then skipped out on his wife; then had a second wife in Grant Co., WI; that second wife, who he married in 1845, would have been my GGGGrandmother, Anna Eliza (Blessing) Winney (1826VA - 1909WI). W.J. Winney was heavily in debt when he died in 1881, causing some of us in the family to wonder if he committed suicide or drank himself to death. He was a member of various teetotaling societies in Grant Co., WI but there is at least one family story about W.J. Winney being beat up by his wife when he came home drunk one time, presumably early in his marriage. He seemed to have at least tried to straighten up as he spent the 1850's working as a constable in Grant Co., WI. Thanks for any help. Kathleen LPurch6636@aol.com

Mabel ROSE VANHORN, taken at a studio in Richfield Springs, NY, early 1900's, in her teens 2. "Grandpa ROSE", no studio or location, 1860's or 1870's, in his 50's or 60's 3. "Grandma ROSE", not studio or location, 1860's or 1870's, in her 50's 4. Unidentified male, taken at a studio in Richfield Springs, NY, 1880's or 1890's, in his teens The photographs were recovered with others containing the surnames KERR and MATTESON/MATTESEN and photographs from studios in Jamestown, NY; North Topeka, KS; New Haven, CT; Titusville, PA; Cambridgeboro, PA; and Union City, PA; I'm hoping to locate someone from this ROSE family so that the photographs can be returned to their rightful place with family. If you are a member of this family, or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
Does anyone know of a connection between Elinora Preston Northup and Almira Gillett Betts? Elinora's newborn daughter and 3 year old son were under the care of Almira Gillett Betts (w/o Lyman Betts) after their mother Elinora died in 1836 at about 26 years of age in Franklin, NY. I'm curious as to why Almira instead of a Preston or Northup resident. Thanks for any info. Annette Campbell
Biographical Review - Biographical Sketches of the leading citizens of Madison County, New York 1894 Dr. Birdsall, a prominent and respected physician of the town of Brookfield, was born in the town of Otego, Otsego County, N. Y., October 30, 1839. The family were originally from Delaware County, the grandfather having been a native of Sidney, N. Y., whence he removed to Otego at an early age, and resided there until his death. The father was educated in the district schools of the place, and worked on the farm until his twenty-fifth year, when he married Miss Harriet Gilbert. He removed to the town of Butternuts after his marriage; and, having long had the desire to serve in the Lord's vineyard as a minister of the gospel, he began studying divinity, and was soon assigned to the charge of the Baptist church in that town. He preached there many years, and later in Otego Village. His last charge was at Sand Hill, in the Unadilla Valley, in which place he was compelled to retire from the ministry on account of his poor health. He was for nearly half a century a d3evoted follower of his Master; and, when he died at Otego, his death was universally mourned. To Rev. Mr. and Mrs. Birdsall a large family of children were born, namely: Millie M.; A. J. Birdsall, our subject; Samuel, a physician of Susquehanna , Pa., who was assistant surgeon in the late war; William O.; Albert of Otsego County; Mary E.; Hattie. The mother died suddenly in Union, Broome County, N. Y., while visiting her brother. Our subject received an excellent education in the district school of his town, and also under the able tutorship of his father. At the age of twenty-three, it being during the Civil War, he entered the Federal Army, enlisting in Company E, Second New York Heavy Artillery. Soon after reaching Virginia, he was appointed Hospital Steward, and about six weeks later was transferred to the general hospital at Fairfax Seminary, near Alexandria. Four months later he was discharged, with the rank of Hospital Steward. Previous to the war Dr. Birdsall had commenced the study of medicine with Dr E. Guy, of Harpersville, Broome County, N. Y., and had taken a course of lectures at the Albany Medical College of New York State. After his discharge from the army he again took up his studies, graduating from the University of Buffalo, N. Y., in February, 1863, and in the spring of that year went to North Brookfield, N. Y., where he opened an office for the practice of medicine. He married November 10 1863, Miss Mary O. Green, daughter of Henry and Celia Green, of North Brookfield. The family came to the State of New York from Rhode Island, and were early settlers in Madison County. At the time of his marriage the Doctor purchased and removed to the farm previously owned by his father-in-law. He has erected new buildings, and has greatly improved the farm, putting it into the highest state of cultivation, availing himself of all the modern inventions for labor-saving which are of such help now in the art of agriculture. The mother of Mrs. Birdsall, a well-reserved lady at the age of ninety-one years, resides with her daughter. Dr. Birdsall is a careful, painstaking practitioner, and has a large and successful practice. He is the only physician in the village, and is looked upon as one of the most skilful in the county. A member of the Madison County Medical Society, he has served as its Secretary for ten years, as Vice-President two terms, and as President one year, absolutely refusing at the end of that time to hold office any longer. He is also connected with the New York State Medical Association and the American Medical Association. In his religious opinions he follows the example set by his good father, and is a member of the Baptist church. He early identified himself with the Masonic fraternity, and is attached to the Sanger Lodge, No. 129, also to Brookfield Lodge, No 632, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and had endeavored to so order his life as to accord with the designs which the Grand Master has marked out. Naturally, he is devoted to the interests of the Grand Army of the Republic, and affiliates with Searle post in his town. Dr. Birdsall is the only one in his father's family who is a Democrat. In the year 1891 he was elected Supervisor of the town by that party. His services in this capacity gave thorough satisfaction, as the ratio of taxation was lower that year than at any time since the war. In his wife, who is of a lovely type of character and is possessed of all the true womanly qualities which go to make a home happy, Dr. Birdsall has ever found a sympathetic and ready helper. Together they enjoy the highest esteem of the best people of their section. Their handsome residence is an attractive spot to their legion of friends, who are ever welcome, and are entertained in a most pleasant and affable manner. Rene'

Hi Sandy, If you check the Cattaraugus County website at http://www.rootsweb.com/~nycattar, you will find many references to the EDSON family. I made a quick search there and found a reference to Isaac B. EDSON living in Machias in the 1855 Census, however, I believe this is Isaac Baxter EDSON (1806-1862), a son by the second wife, Persis (BILLS) EDSON. Isaac Baxter EDSON married Sally Jane JEWELL and had 10 children, a family that I'm researching. Now that is the proverbial wicked step mother! Wonder if she was hung. 8/6/1875 > Poison and Death.-The Colliersville Poisoning Case-Verdict of the Jury.-Step Mother Glynn sent to Jail-Strong Evidences of Guilt. On the 17th of last month, Thomas Glynn, of Colliersville, was married to Sarah ROUNDY. Tuesday of last week, Mrs. Glynn called for strychnine at the store of A. Diefendorf but the merchant not having any on hand she brought a box of Rat Exterminator called "Sure Death to Rats and Mice." On the night of that day, after Tommy and Johnny Glynn had gone to bed, the latter was TAKEN VIOLENTLY ILL. His brother being tired and sleepy, did not remain awake and we shall never know how long the poor little fellow was in misery He had been sick late in the afternoon, and in the evening, but Mrs. Glynn was apparently unconcerned, and did nothing for the boy before he retired for the night. Glynn is a track 'walker' between Colliersville and Oneonta. On his return home, he was not appraised by his wife of the boy's illness, and he had no suspicion of anything wrong. In the morning Mr. Glynn called his boys to breakfast, but no response being made, he went to the --mer and FOUND JOHNNY DEAD on the floor. His wife and neighbors were immediately informed of the fact. Coroner Houghton, of Schenevus, was called and a jury of the following named gentlemen summoned to hold an inquest: John W. Burnside, foreman, John Van Dusen, Jerome Wells, --- W.(?) Hadsell, ---- and Anderson M. Barnes. It was established that Mrs. Glynn bought the poison and she admitted the transaction; also informing the Coroner that the box had not been opened, that it was still on a shelf in the pantry. Deputy Sheriff Farnham took the lady in charge for the purpose of procuring the box of Rat Exterminator, but it was not found where she designated. The house was then searched without finding it. The circumstances of the boy's illness were inquired into and all the evidence indicated that he lad HAD BEEN POISONED. The stomach was removed for examination, and the jury adjourned, pursuant to a call from the Coroner. After the preliminary investigation, Mrs. Glynn stated that she disliked to remain in the house as she feared different articles of food had been poisoned. On examination of the pantry it was discovered that the paper, covering a jar of jelly, had been torn; and the contents disturbed. Some of the jelly was fed to a cat, and it died soon after. Nothing was done in reference to the case until Saturday morning, when Mr. Farnham on complaint of her husband ARRESTED THE WOMAN, and placed her in close confinement in the Goodyear House. In the meantime the boy Johnny had been buried, and fresh evidence was being obtained indicating the guilt of the step-mother. On Monday the jury was again called, when the stomach was carefully examined by Coroner Houghton and Dr. Simmons, of Colliersville. It was not sent to Albany for analyzation, as reported last week. THE VERDICT. That in the opinion of this jury, deceased, came to his death by means of a poisonous substance, known as "Rat Exterminator," said poison having been purchased by Sarah Glynn, and we believed administered by her, with intent to cause death. After the verdict of the jury, Coroner Houghton, remanded the woman Glynn to jail, where she will await the action of the next Grand Jury. The boy Johnny was a bright, handsome little fellow and seemed much attached to his step-mother. There was no evidence that ……satisfactory all around. It may be hard to establish the guilt of the prisoner, but at present it certainly looks very dark for her. > Delaware County.-Walton. Squire SHERWOOD, aged 78(?), died July26th. > Eliza A.
