    1. Re: Town clerks of Pittsfield and Plainfield NY
    2. Marty
    3. Try doing a Google search on "TOWN CLERK PITTSFIELD NY" and "TOWN CLERK PLAINFIELD NY" They returned addresses and phone numbers for town clerks near the places you mentioned. Note that in NY state the town and village/hamlet frequently do not have the same name. For instance, Googling on the town clerk for the (village of) Washingtonville NY brought back the town clerk of Blooming Grove NY, and Googling on the village clerk of Washingtonville NY brought back the village clerk of Washingtonville NY. Confusing? Yep...that's New York. I hope this helps. Good luck in your quest. Marty PS: You could possibly use the same technique "TOWN CLERK xxxxxxxxx NY" or "VILLAGE CLERK xxxxxxxx NY" for other areas.

    1. Town clerks
    2. Dear List: I need to ask you for help again. I have looked at the Otsego Co., NY website and see the names and addresses of town historians, but I cannot see the names and addresses of town clerks. Can anyone supply the names and addresses and email addresses, if any, for the town clerks of Plainfield and Pittsfield, Otsego County, New York? I need this information so I can write for my parents' certified birth certificates. Also, I have a lot of info I could contribute to the Otsego Co site. I emailed Jan Cortez a couple of weeks ago, but have not received an answer. Maybe she is on vacation. Does anyone know? I emailed her at the address at the Otsego Co. site, otsego@jansdigs.com. Is that a good address for her? Thanks a lot. Jayne perllan987@aol.com

    3. All I can find is: ============= 1800 US Census, New York, Otsego County, Town of Burlington, p. Caleb Johnson 00001 00001 There is extensive information on Caleb's ancestry and that of his wife (she goes back to the Mayflower) on Rootsweb at: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=rkwest&id=I104990 For further see: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?surname=johnson&given=caleb and enter Mary Cooke as spouse. But you may well already have this, since I find no death information going beyond his listing in the 1800 census, as above. ------------------------------ David and Abel Huestis both seem identified with the town of Warren in Herkimer County, just north of Otsego County, where they appear in various censuses. There is information on David Huestis at: http://www.accessgenealogy.com/scripts/data/database.cgi?file=Data&report=SingleArticle&ArticleID=0001048 and http://www.gencircles.com/users/pmchefalo/3 and http://www.gencircles.com/users/pmchefalo/3/data/1 Abel, son of David, as your probably know, is listed at: http://www.gencircles.com/users/pmchefalo/3/data/2 ============= I suspect little if any of this is new. 3. Judy, Otsego County does not border Canada -- but is in central New York State. Moses Bennes (so indexed, but probably Bennet) in the Town of Maryland in the 1820 Census is listed as being over 45. He appears to have two sons, aged 16-25, in his household, but of course no names are listed. A Moses Bennett (likely a son) seemes to have remained in the Town of Maryland -- this is the 1850 Census entry for him, which should establish whether or not he is your great grandfather. -- but he was born in 1797, not 1826. 1850 US Census, New York, Otsego County, Town of Maryland, p. 152, 272-281 Moses Bennett, white, male, age 53. 1. Aunt Gladys' WW II Diary
    2. Peggy J Knox
    3. Hi Everybody, For the past few months or so, I have been working with my cousins, Johnny Knox Holcombe and Liz Knox Adkinson to put excerpt of my Aunt Gladys diary she kept during WWII. Johnny gave me permission to put excerpts from her mother's diary on my site, and Liz, who volunteered to do my web site when I put Gramma Knox's Legacy Book I on the Internet, has done a wonderful job putting the diary on the site. There is one kink with the thumbnail pictures on the title page of the diary. They don't seem to be there right now, but I have no doubt that Liz will be able to fix that. The URL is: http://freepages.family.rootsweb.com/~peggyjknox <http://freepages.family.rootsweb.com/%7Epeggyjknox> The explanation of the other two pictures that have been added to my site. On my welcome page is a picture of me and my son, Dean DeVirgilio, which was taken in my home on December 26, 2004, and the other is a picture of Aunt Gladys with two of her four children--Sammie Tabor on the left and Lewis on the right.. It was taken by my son Dean in 1997, when we stayed with Aunt Gladys at the Knox farm in MIddlefield, NY--a few miles from Cooperstown--for a few days. During the war, Uncle Lewie was a student minister in Middletown, CT. In addition to the every day life that all Americans lived during that tine, the diary includes things that were happening in the Knox Family during that time, including the illnesses and deaths of my Aunt Lil and my Grandpa Knox. My grandparents, George and Lillian Knox, and my parents, Mike and Hazel Knox and my sister Faith, as well as my cousins Clifford and Janet Knox all lived on the farm on Resin Rd in Middlefield during the war. Uncle Lewie served as minister to the Baptist Church, the Methodist Church in MIddlefield and the the Methodist Church in Roseboom in the 1960s and 1970s. Uncle Lew, Ant Gladys and their son Lew are buried in the Middlefield Baptist Church cemetery. Their daughter Sammie and her husband Shirley Tabor live in Maryland, NY. Sammie is a lay minister in the Methodist Church in Middlefield, and for years has taken an annual Wesleyan tour in different parts of the world, including where the Knox family started out in Edinburgh, Scotland. She works in the bank in Hartwick.. I've tried my best to identify who is who in the end notes, and other things that I thought needed further explanation. It goes without saying, if you recognize I have something wrong, or would like further info, please feel free to let me know that. I do hope you enjoy reading. Shalom Peggy J. Knox

    3. I guess the message escaped before I added what it's about. Ginny Buechele, who's very active in Dutchess county pushing them to have a county historian (it's in the law, but they don't appoint one!) and much other genealogical research, sent this to the list: Subject: Leave our Heritage Alone! In an effort to stand up for our Dutchess County and Hudson Valley Heritage, I have created an on-line Petition to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Please Read and Sign the Petition if you agree! Here is the Link http://www.petitiononline.com/fishkill/petition.html This petition is in response to PETA's Call for Fishkill to change its name - Perhaps NOW and maybe another decade from now PETA will give up their ridiculous efforts in this regard and stick to the real issues. Poughkeepsie Journal Article Kill name, PETA asks Fishkill July 14, 2005 [excerpt] If Fishkill changes its name to a more animal-friendly moniker, will the striped bass swimming in the Hudson River have any idea? PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, seems to think so. The animal rights group based in Norfolk, Va., renewed its call, first made nearly a decade ago, for Fishkill to change its name. The group now wants the town and village to be known as fishinghurts.com, which just happens to be the Internet address for a PETA Web site dedicated to the group's ''fish empathy project.'' - ------------------------------------------------------------- Ginny says: "Bah Humbug" - Please Leave Our Heritage Alone!. Ginny A Google search also turned up the following (so PETA's been at it for years, evidently) Here's PETA in 1996! I love all animals, but do we need to change historic names?? She wrote: Emails to PETA can be sent to info@peta.org. I just sent them one regarding this frivolous and silly campaign. It is indeed sad that with all the genuine instances of animal cruelty they would waste time and resources on this! Jean
