I haven't yet searched on the Internet, the LDS records (they filmed so much!) or the Otsego web site. But together maybe we can find out something. I just wonder if there would be that kind of civil record so early. ?? Jean
According to the Biographical Review of Otsego County of 1893, after the war, Charles Nicholas was a clerk in a hotel in West Laurens. They lived on the farm most of their lives since leaving the notel and have resided in their present home twenty three years. His two sons, Albert H. and Charles W. are engaged with him as sawyers in the manufacture of lumber. Albert H. Married Cora E. Bard, and Charles W. married Flora Goodenough. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ann Hopkins" <ahopkins@oregontrail.net> To: <NYOTSEGO-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, October 15, 2005 10:15 PM Subject: [NYOTSEGO] Nichols, Charles & Alvira, or sons Albert & Charles > Would anyone have information about Charles Nichols and wife > Alvira(Harrington) who lived in Morris township up until 1920's? I would also be interested in learning the whereabouts of apprentice records for Otsego County...my great-grandfather's obituary says that he was a carpenter's apprentice at age 11 (which would have been about 1863). As a young child he lived in Portlandville, but was married and working as a carpenter in Oneonta on the 1875 census. Not sure which place he did his apprenticeship. Anyone have access to 1855 and 1865 NY state census records for Springfield, Otsego Co, NY? If so, I'd appreciate a lookup on the following family. Thanx in advance - Judy 1855 - Tobias VanBuren age 44 and wife Dorothy or Dolly - age 45 1865 - Tobias VanBuren age 54 and wife Dorothy or Dolly age 55
Does anyone have any information concerning the family of David Ward, born between 1780 and 1790, who lived in Otego in 1810 and in Laurens in 1820, 1830, and 1840? His family included 6 sons and 4 daughters. The only information I have comes from Federal Census records from those years, a deed from J. Pratt to David Ward for land in Otego in 1807, and a deed from David Ward back to J. Pratt for land in Otego in 1812. I believe that David is my g g grandfather Abram D. Ward's father as well as the son of Elihu Ward (1757-1840), who came from Washington County in 1800, lived in Otego from 1800-1830, and then in Oneonta in 1840 before he died. If so, then J. Pratt, is probably Jacob Pratt, Elihu's brother-in-law and David's uncle. In addition, Rufus Ward, who resided in Otego in 1820, would be David's brother. I'm guessing that this family may relate many of the early Otsego County Ward's to one another but I have no idea who the children were or who David's wife was. Thanks, Max Ward

A major event in this process will be a press conference to be held at 9:00 am on Wednesday, November 2, at the Ontario County Historical Society in Canandaigua. Assemblyman Brian Kolb, the sponsor of this legislation, has arranged this press conference. Invitations will be sent to media organizations, both print and TV, in the greater Rochester and Finger Lakes area. At this conference there will be an opportunity to present petitions, resolutions and letters requesting legislation to limit the cost of searching and copying vital records for genealogists. If your society or organization has not passed a resolution or collected signatures making this request, please do both and send copies to Ron Krahl before November. If you are not affiliated with an organization, please drop Ron a note or e-mail making this request. In addition to providing a written statement in support of the bill, which has been introduced, Assemblyman Kolb will make some brief remarks followed by statements by several genealogists about the value of this legislation. Photos and news releases will then be sent to additional media outlets in the areas represented by the genealogists participating in the conference. Assemblyman Kolb already has a rationale NYSCOGO has developed in support of this legislation. He would like some specific brief quotes (one sentence of two short ones) from genealogists to possibly include in his written and oral statements. If you can think of something succinct that would play well, please send it to ron@krahl.org. If we feel the press conference has been successful. Assemblyman Kolb will arrange for additional conferences in other parts of the state. Other activities planned to gather support for this legislation include: a.. Arranging for the bill to be introduced into the Senate. a.. Visits by individual and small groups of genealogists to their legislators to encourage their signing on as cosponsors or multisponsors of the bill, or at least being willing to vote for it, a.. A lobbying day when genealogists from across the state will gather in Albany to visit a number of assemblypersons and senators to discuss the merits of this legislation with them. We have Assemblyman Kolb's whole-hearted support for this bill. By November we hope to have an equally supportive Senator on board. Making this bill become a law is going to require a major effort by all of us. As we move towards the opening of a new legislative session we will be in touch with you to tell you how you can help.
Hi Marc, According the Cemetery Map of Otsego Co., Roseboom, which Hugh MacDougall told you is the township for South Valley, does not list a Pramer Hill Cemetery. It lists the following cemeteries: 220 Roseboom Cemetery (Rt 57) 312 Winne Graveyard (located off Rt 165 by Ziefle Rd) 238 South Valley & Pleasant Brook (Rt 165) 288 Unknown ( Rt 165) 233 Sisum Cemetery (Rt 50) 278 Unknown (Cemetery is located at eastern edge of Roseboom almost to the Schoharie Co. line; way off Edwards Rd) 95 Forgotten Cemetery (located on Rt 50) Perhaps Pramer Hill Cem. is one of the unknown cemeteries. I did not even find the name Pramer Hill on the Roseboom township map. Marc Archer, South Valley is a hamlet in the Town of Roseboom, Otsego County, and is located on State Route 165, which runs west from the hamlet of Roseboom. There is a County map of Cemeteries, showing the location and names of virtually all cemeteries in Otsego County, but I can't for the moment lay my hands on my copy. However, a more direct route might well be to contact Carol Brodie, who writes a regular column on South Valley affairs in the weekly Cooperstown Crier newspaper. According to her column, she can be reached by phone at (607) 264-3225. The web site that was provided is NOT Pittsfield, Otsego County, New York. Pittsfield is very very small, not even a stoplight or a store. Here is the address of the Town Clerk: Pittsfield Town Clerk Route 80 New Berlin, New York I stopped in last year to get a death certificate for my great grandfather. I was told the records before 1886 had been destroyed. Hopefully you are looking for dates after that. I loved the bureaucracy when I lived in Blooming Grove; too funny. Villages are within towns, towns & cities within the county etc.. The town clerk of a village today is likely the person who is town clerk for the town wherein the village resides/exists. Blooming Grove is still rather rural. Washingtonville is more heavily populated. I used to live on top of a hill just over the boundary of Monroe, N.Y. Our address was to Monroe, N.Y. It took as a while to figure out why some bills we paid were to Blooming Grove. We set out to find Blooming Grove and found two buildings that were where the original town was supposed to be - a diner and a post office I think it was. Most of the rest of our utilities were paid in Washingtonville, and we shopped for groceries in Monroe. Truth is I think my favorite place was Chester, N.Y. When I left Chester was all but a ghost town. I understand it is coming back. Historically, Chester was actually a very important place and very active in the Underground Railroad movement. Sorry for the tangent! E.T. misses home!!! m Marty wrote: > > Try doing a Google search on > > "TOWN CLERK PITTSFIELD NY" > and > "TOWN CLERK PLAINFIELD NY" > > They returned addresses and phone numbers > for town clerks near the places you mentioned. > > Note that in NY state the town and village/hamlet > frequently do not have the same name.
