Is there any chance that the Richfield Springs Mercury will be added to the list? It covers everything of local note for many years in northern Otsego and southern Herkimer counties as many of us well know. Dean Ames McCallum
This may be old news, but the Early American Newspapers website, available (to me) through membership in the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society (NYGBS), seems to be rapidly expanding, and currently has the following Otsego County newspapers available, and both searchable and browsable, on line: Cherry Valley Gazette (1818-1820) Cooperstown Federalist (1809-1816) Freeman's Journal (1818-1820) Impartial Observer (1808-1809) Otsego Herald (1795-1821) Otsego Republican Press [Cherry Valley] (1812-1813) Watch-Tower (1814-1831) They seem to be adding new titles fairly rapidly, and it is certainly becoming a major resource for local history here in Otsego County. The search engine is also a good one. Hugh Hugh MacDougall Official Historian Village of Cooperstown 8 Lake Street Cooperstown, NY 13326 coophist@stny.rr.com

Here is an exciting announcement that I recently put on my BLOG. Check out my website and BLOG site for current happenings in UpstateNew York Genealogy.Dick Hillenbrand website: www.ny-genes.comblog: http://ny-genes.blogspot.com/ LDS Digitizing Books, on-line NOW at BYU !!! Oh BOY, here we go! A dream coming true. The Family History Library is starting todigitize their book holdings, mostly family histories to date, andthey are putting them on-line, fully search able by any word oradvanced search combinations. Five thousand plus of these books are on the Brigham Young UniversityLibrary servers and readily accessible, NOW! Here is a partial clip of an announcement I just received and I haveonly made a quick check of how to find them and how to search, but itis very exciting "…the LDS Family History Library has announced that it has begun theprocess of digitizing and making available on the Internet all of theFamily History books in their collection. These are primarily books inthe "929.273Series" that are currently housed on the first floor ofthe Family History Library (previously housed on the fourth floor ofthe Joseph Smith Memorial Building). At the present time (September2005), about 5000 books have been digitized and are available, andthey have announced that they are adding about 100 titles a week tothe on-line collection. Copyright issues are playing a role indetermining the order in which they progress through this task; booksout of copyright are being done first." Go to the web site of the Harold B. Lee Library at BYU athttp://www.lib.byu.edu/ , then on the home page, follow the links:Find Other Materials; Electronic; On Line Collections at BYU; TextCollections tab; Family History Archive from the list of collectionsthat are displayed. The search box on the left seems to be he one tofind your books at and the search box on the right is for searchingwithin the pages on screen. I have not used it enough yet to be proficient, but you bet I'll bechecking this little treasure out, a lot!--Dick Hillenbrand website: www.ny-genes.comblog: http://ny-genes.blogspot.com/
From: Town of Bristol To: NYS-LGH@listserv.nysed.gov Sent: Wednesday, November 02, 2005 2:11 PM Subject: Fee for Vital Records Assemblyman Brian Kolb (R,C - Canandaigua) is asking for public and organizational support for Assembly bill A.07209, which would cut the cost of copying and reviewing records for genealogical and other purposes in half. The bill also allows genealogical Society members to review records at no cost. Records also used for membership in many organizations such as National Daughters of the American Revolution, Sons of the American Revolution, Mayflower Society, Founders and Patriots Organization, to name a few. Also for Passports and similar things. The Schools in New York State require children to do family histories in the early grades. These records could be of use to them. Your inquiry to your local legislator would be of benefit in getting this law passed. You could contact Rep Kolb at kolbb@assembly.state.ny.us for more information
I've "rescued" an old photograph of Helen E. DOWNES which was taken at the Mereness Studio in Oneonta, New York. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1870's or 1880's with Helen appearing to be about 4 years old at the time. In addition to her name someone has written "My Mother - CRMJ" on the back of the photograph. Based on limited research and thanks to the assistance of a DOWNES Family Researcher I was able to determine that Helen was b. Nov 1875, the daughter of Richard and Frances Elizabeth DOWNES. During the 1880 census the family was living in Oneonta, NY: Richard H. DOWNS, age 30, born in England, A Car Painter, parents born in England Elizabeth DOWNS, wife, age 28, born in NY, Housewife, parents born in NY Hellen E. DOWNS, dau, age 4, born in NY Mary DOWNS, dau, age 2, born in NY The family was still living in Oneonta, NY during the 1900 census: Richard H. DOWNES, b. Apr 1850, age 50, married 25 years, born Eng, parents born Eng, came to USA in 1871, Painter Frances E. DOWNES, wife, b. May 1852, age 48, married 25 years, born NY, parents born NY, housewife Helen E. DOWNES, dau, b. Nov 1875, age 24, born NY, Trained Nurse Mary H. DOWNES, dau, b. Apr 1878, age 22, born NY, Brockery Bookkeeper John R. DOWNES, son, b. Nov 1884, age 15, born NY, At School Clark L. DOWNES, son, b. Aug 1890, age 9, born NY, At School I'm hoping to locate someone from this DOWNES Family so that this precious old photograph can be returned to the care of family. If you are a member of this family, or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
