Hi Shirley, Sorry I said Waverly was in Broome Co....ooops... but in looking at the NYS map index, Paul is right BUT there are TWO Waverlys...one in Tioga Co and one in Chemung Co. No, according to map, the city is part in Chemung and part in Tioga. Isn't that interesting. Sandy Paul Giometti wrote: > Waverly is in Tioga County NY. >

Hi Mary, I have indexed 1855, 1865, 1875 & am in the processing of doing 1892 but I don't find any Caroline (Carrie) Signor. In fact I only found on Signor. 1892 isn't finished..ther are 7 districts about 15-16 pages each and I'm only into the 2nd district but I do begin to see a lot of Italians from Italy. In 1875 the population almost doubled..became two election districts.. due to the railroad and it continued to increase. Signor is a known name here in Oneonta but unfortuantely I haven't found it in the census Are you sure they lived in Oneonta or possibly a town around Oneonta, like Milford or Otego? Thanks again Sandy. Carrie Signor may have remarried as she was listed with her sister and bro. in law, Jacob and Elizabeth Farrington on the 1870 census in Oneonta but not found on the 1880 census. (Carrie left her daughter in Cortland Co. and went back to Oneonta whereas her husband went west with another woman) Early Signors in NY were German Palatines and descend from Johan Jacob Sickner. Any other descendants out there?? Cynthia Christ, Your John Mager of Decatur has an extensive Revolutionary War pension record (available through membership in the New York Biographical and Genealogical Society), the main effect of which is this All his records are under the name of John Magee (or McGee). He was born in Guilderland, Albany County, Sept. 16, 1761. He served in the Revolution: 4 months in 1779 in the Company of Capt. Schermerhorn, Col. Tesly's [?] Regiment; 9 months beginning March 1, 1780 in the navy on the Brig Lady Washington, Capt. Maguire[?]. 1 month beginning Sept. 1781, in the army, Company of Capt. Reinstadt [?], Col. Wemple's Regiment. On June 17,, 1790 he married Rachel Walker, of Noorman's Kill, at the Dutch Reformed Church in Schenectady; witnesses included his brother Abraham and her brother Benjamin. He was awarded a pension in 1832, then living in the Town of Worcester, Otsego County, apparently without any real documentation of his service beyond a good reputation. He died on June 2, 1844, in the Town of Decatur, Otsego County, and his Widow was awarded a widow's pension; it was increased in 1849. I note that in the Census of 1820, when he was in Decatur, he is listed as John Mager in the Ancestry.com census index, and John Magee in the NYBGS census index. I can't find him anywhere in the 1830 census. I have just finished indexing the 1855 Oneonta State Census and will do lookups. Please try to include both surname and first name and any spellings of name. Index includes number of dwelling & family, name, age, birth place & years resided in Oneonta. Other than "wife", only designation for children was "child". Sandy Goodspeed
Cindy, The page on which you found John Mager was a summary page, showing township totals plus Revolutionary War pensioners. In the 1840 census, the right hand side of each page is used for totals in the family, names of Revolutionary pensioners, and other information; since this is a township summary the left hand pages (with names of householders) are not used. In fact, John Mager is listed as living in the Town of Decatur, Otsego County, page 278 (printed), 535 (penciled) with the following listing: John Mager 00000000001 0000000001 The right hand of this page also shows him as a Revolutionary Pensioner aged 82. Decatur is a rural township on the eastern edge of Otsego County, adjoining Schoharie County. But his name is so badly scrawled that the used by ancestry.com obviously couldn't read it, and indexed it as John Magee, which is why only the summary was indexed under his name. But if you search for the name John Magee you should find it; or search for "Justice Platt," you will find your John listed just below him. Hope this solves your immediate problem. I'll have a look to see if there is more about him anywhere.
