    3. I hope to visit Oswego in September to see what I can find about my DesRoches/Stone relatives who lived there from 1845-ca1900. Are any records from that period extant? Is it difficult to see church records? Does the genealogical society have regular hours? I would appreciate an input as I will be a stranger the in the town of my ancestors. Sue

    2. Last I heard, at this time St. Mary's Church will not, under any circumstances, let you look at their records. Your best bet is to write to them and be sure to include a donation. As for the Catholic cemetery (St. Peter's & St. Paul's), the story is that the records were "lost in a fire" (don't know exactly when). Before I knew this, I had written to them about some relatives I assumed were burried there and received a nice, polite, "sorry, they aren't here" reply. I've since found funeral records that indicate they are there, so either way, I don't think their records are very well kept. My family wasn't exactly affluent, so I suspect that they had no headstones put up. You may have better luck. On the other hand, the Oswego Records Center has census records, city directories, funeral records and more. But they have $$$ problems like everyone else, so you should call to confirm their hours first.
