You're right and the green were Catholic...But the fighting Irish were Catholic steming from Notre Dame. The catholic priest was French there during the Civil War, the French didn't want to fight in the Civil War but the Irish Catholic attending, wanted to much to the dismay of the Catholic priest, so hence came the phrase "The Fighting Irish" to make a long story short..
