    3. You are welcome to come and see the "Poorhouse Journal" anytime you want at the Records Center off 481 in Oswego 9 to 5 weekdays except holidays. We are very grateful to Diane & Barry Colby for their generous donation. Words can not say enough to say how much we appreciate this. We need more people like this to further the research of our ancestors instead of the greedy money hungry ones. Don't get me wrong I'm not against researchers getting paid for their time and expenses but these paid sites that all of a sudden say if you want this additional information it will cost you X amount of dollars more. Sorry! I got off on a tangent. "Kudos" go out to the Colby's. There will be a story about this in our local Palladium Times so any questions about it you can contact me and I will see you get the info. Marilyn Rowsey Dirk Vice President Oswego Genealogy Society (Next meeting : 6:30 July 28 ,2003 Oswego County Bldg. 4th floor Oswego, NY Subject :The Civil War)

    3. For those of us who might have an interest in the evolution of poorhouses in this country, you may find the article in the current issue of HISTORY MAGAZINE, Sept. 2003, to be of interest. "The Poorhouse in the Land of Plenty" by Guylaine Spencer is quite thorough. The origin of the poorhouse started in 1536 under King Henry VIII and lasted until their ultimate disappearance during the early 1900s when they were probably replaced by public housing projects and government means for supporting the poor. A website is mentioned that may already have been mentioned on this site: www.poorhouse.com.
