Listers: I wonder is anyone out there familiar with the process for obtaining LDS records? Hopefully you know how to get them on the net as I am disabled. I know things like: head of house (Hiram Ashael VanDusen); LDS batch 8715903, sheet 69, source call # 1396356, film 170624 p 133 repts: Hiram b Montague Lanark Ontario Jan 26 1831; relative: Burten W. Ritenburgh (submitter ?) I sent the above info to the following URL. I did not receive a response. "Can I obtain information on the internet? I know specific information about the file i.e.: LDS batch 8715903, sheet 69, source call # 1396356, film 170624 page 133. http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?display =generalfilmsearch&columns=*,0,0 But I can't find anyplace on this web site to 'plug in' the information. I am disabled and it would be a hardship to 'have' to go to a center to receive any information. This is not my first time trying to obtain the information. No matter how carefully I 'read' this site, I find no way to obtain this information. Thank you - I eagerly await your response 7/24/03 If you know how to obtain this information on the net it will help me so very much! Thanking you in advance! Lauren Rowe Syracuse NY
What is available on the internet is just the smallest tip of the iceberg. The 1880 US census is online at familysearch.org along with the 1881 Canadian and British census. The film referenced is microfilm which you can read at the LDS family history center closest to you. If you cannot do that then you will need a volunteer or paid researcher to view the film and make copies. If you look up the local family history center address and phone number and give them a call to explain your situation, maybe they would order the film and make relevant copies for you at cost or for a donation of your choice. All the centers are volunteer run with generally very knowledgeable and helpful volunteers. Wouldn't hurt to ask. Also, you need not be Mormon - they help everyone. Also, you might consider re-posting your query listing the name of the person(s) you are researching and any relevant dates and places associated with them that you know or can make an educated guess for. This might generate better responses than the generic 'request help' subject line. I don't know how to get it off the net, but you might try the telephone. Look in the phone book for the nearest LDS church and ask for their Family History Center. I have found the people (generally volunteers) who work there to be extremely helpful to anyone who needs information and/or help.
