Thanks to all who responded - and there were many. I was able to find what I wanted. Starting at www.familysearch.org, click on 'search the catalog', then 'place search' then (and here is where I made a mistake yesterday), fill in county name of your choice on top *and* for 'part of' fill in whatever state that county is in. I filled in 'st lawrence' for the top and 'new york' for the bottom. The search returned 'St. Lawrence county' as part of NY and listed under that were various resources including the NY state censuses.
