I actually have two questions. Has anyone heard of a Rev. Ehler While (White?) in the 1850s in the City of Oswego? And what is the difference between the "Town of Oswego" and the "City of Oswego". Thank you. Janet
New York has many instances of towns/cities (or village) with the same name. Typically the city or village has a more dense population, a core 'downtown' of businesses, central water/sewer, school system, trash pickup etc. The surrounding town is typically more rural with farmland, forest, houses on septic systems etc. Each has different needs from local govt, different taxes (lower in the town than in the village/city). They may share some services (plowing the roads, schools) while other services may be separate. Gives you one more place to lose track of ancestors! Have not heard of this reverend. You could try rootsweb 'family trees'. Maybe someone else has posted info there. It's an unusual first name which typically helps.
