You have certainly bitten off a huge chunk!!! I xeroxed the pages for all of my family names from his set and it took me some 8 months just to enter the names and dates into my genealogy program. I can imagine - with such a huge work - it would take me years to type everything! More power to you. I'll be looking forward to the completion of your work for when it appears on the internet. Hi Jan, There is no problem retyping names, dates, etc. from any published work into a database. The copyright issues would be involved if I were to scan the work and put it online or otherwise redistribute it. Additionally the Jacobus work is only a part of my large database, not an entity into itself and I source every entry as well. I've been typing since December and am only about 1/3 of the way through. It is a very time consuming project. Thanks for writing though .... Have you checked on the copyright on this? If my memory serves, he wrote this set in about 1937 and he and/or his heirs might object to your putting it out on the internet. Better safe than sorry! Russ Glad you liked that site. Also, for $35,000. today I would suggest a "fast" move and don't really think you could get much in upstate NY anymore either. Pat
Wow - that is a trip to the past and a look to the future. In 1960 it asks for various housing value ranges where the top dollar amount is $35,000 plus. Hmmm, now what would I get in the metro DC area for that kind of money? Based on a quick look, I think the last time the whole nation got the same questionnare was 1950. If the current methods stay put (census released after 70 years), that one will become public in 2020. I think after that things will go downhill somewhat as sampling was used rather than the census bureau trying to 'touch' every household. Fortunately there are many other records to search - church, newspaper, cemetery, wills, land records, etc. that cover the 10 year gaps between the cenuses. I wish I had saved a copy or taken notes regarding the questions I was asked to compare with. But, I only did that the last time. However here is the website that I use for reference regarding information that will be on these Census when the time comes to release them and I believe it is as close as one can get to the accurate questions asked on each Census year. http://www.ipums.umn.edu/usa/voliii/tEnumForm.html Warm Regards Pat R.

I just uploaded several pdf images of marriage records from the Ogdensburg, NY Methodist church. From www.usgenweb.org, click 'New York' the select a county, St. Lawrence county. When you reach the county page use the drop down list 'select a link' and select 'church' then 'Church Records of St. Lawrence County'. A grand title to be sure since I have just a handful of churches but hey, I keep plugging away at it! If you search enough you may find a note by a really annoyed pastor who apparently unknowingly married a bigamist. These are particularly valuable records since the counties did not record marriages until 1880 with the exception of a brief earlier period (see Anne Cady's vital records section). thanks for the additional input, that's what is so great about this Internet site. Guess what, I didn't know there was a New York State census - so again, thanks for that tidbit. cm
Carole That is true. However alternative sources have been used to put together other records that one might use in its place. First one might try the NYState Census for information. The Veterans Census is another one, Agricultural Census in some area's, Directories, Tax Lists, Military Records and others. Not as complete as one would want but still a great access for research. Alternative resources are a wonder. Pat R
Russ, according to Ancestry.com - there was a fire January 10, 1921 and destroyed much of the 1890 Federal Census. very limited information was saved. carole
I did not know about the cost to the library. My library is part of a library system which includes 8 or 10 libraries in rural and suburban locations.I assume they share the cost. Doug Groner
By free,I mean my library charges me nothing to use their computer or to access Ancestry or Heritage Quest. If I print anything they charge me .20 cents If i go to the LDS family history center they charge nothing to use their computer or access Ancestry but they do charge .20 cents for copies from the printer. Other charges at LDS are around $5 or $6 (they just increased) to send for & rent microfilms they have stored in Salt Lake City.If acopy is made from this microfilm they charge .35 cents. They do not charge for their classes. Now there's an odd thought because we are constantly looking backward. I'm just plain curious. Does anyone know how many censuses to be released in the future will list complete families for the entire U.S? Beginning with 1850 and through 1930 we have that. The first census I fillled out as a married adult was in 1980. It was a 'short form' and I don't recall it being worth copying and saving for family history purposes. At some point the census does not include the entire U.S. population but I don't recall ever hearing which year that happened. Russ Sprague Kensington, Maryland
It's free to you, but it's not free to the library. There was a big debate at my local library about whether they could afford to continue the subscriptions. Fortunately, they decided to do it. I took a chance and checked my library's website and lo and behold I found out that I'm able to access Heritage Quest from home. I would have never have thought it was possible. Thank you very much for the suggestion. This will save me a lot of time and money now. Janet
My local library has heritagequest.com free to people with active library cards. It is an online source that I can access from home. Just wondered if it works the same at your library. If you don't have a hi speed connection and the library does then you may want to access it from the library. In my case, I can view census images from home. I would suggest that someone check periodically with their individual library or their larger county wide system. It appears from what has been posted online in the past 6 months or so that many more libraries now offer Heritage Quest. That very thing had happened with me. The first time I asked locally it was no, and then a few months later I found out by accident that we did have free home access. A year or so ago, when I asked the genealogical librarian at our county library whether they had subscriptions to either of these programs, he said they did not because of the cost, which to a library was far above the cost of an individual home subscription. This is rural Indiana...
