I continue to be amazed by the number of people who are so willing to bash Ancestry when it supplies so much excellent value for such a reasonable cost. Those of us who are seasoned researchers and who answer queries for others tend to find much information from Ancestry that we freely pass on to others. Those of us with limited opportunity to travel to research find it useful. I can understand people not having enough money to subscribe or have research needs Ancestry does not cover, but aside from financial constraints a few may have, I fail to see how good researchers could fail to see value in all the resources currently available online, with Ancestry being the best in my opinion.. Beginners might be advised to stick to research at one's local library and the free information available online until they learn a bit about how to research, but those having gone back a few generations and having New England ancestors, and wishing to progress will eventually need the resources offered by large libraries with genealogical collections or Ancestry as an adjunct and alternative. The every name indexing in the US census alone makes Ancestry well worth the cost in "my opinion". Only a few years ago, driving 4 hours each way to the Pittsfield, MA National Archives and having to deal without indexes for some census schedules had me yearning for the US census online. I feel so fortunate to have this readily accessible from my home online. Obviously I don't have to pay gas or lodging, reserve a microfilm reader and spend hours looking for things a search engine takes me to in a matter of seconds. I find so.... much of use in the census. So if one does not like Ancestry, feel free not to use it, but I would request that people pass on the truth. Half truths or absolute inaccuracies confuse the beginner. My guess is that those bashing it, have never really become acquainted with either basic library research or research using Ancestry. Nothing can entirely take the place of searching where your ancestors lived whether it be Oswego or Boston or wherever. Onsite and other avenues will always be needed, but Ancestry sure provides a good jumping off place for many families. As with any resource, one needs to learn what it offers and what it does not offer. One wonders why people would expect lookups for information on Ancestry, yet bash it....... One wonders why people pass on blatant inaccuracies.... Yes WorldConnect is FREE for everyone, and one can remove one's database should one choose. Rootsweb mailing lists and county Web pages are also free (provided by Ancestry). Margaret Scheffler
AMEN, Margaret. One other thing I might add...my gedcoms were uploaded at the Rootsweb site, where they can be accessed for free. They are also at Ancestry. Since I'm a subscribed member I don't know if these trees are still free at Ancestry, or if they are included in the "basic" subscription, but they used to be free when I first started online researching in 1998. I personally don't feel that Ancestry is "taking" our research and making it their own. We "give" it to the websites where it is then available to anyone with internet access. ----- Original Message ----- From: "MScheffler" <mscheffl@twcny.rr.com> To: <NYOSWEGO-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, June 28, 2006 10:42 PM Subject: [NYOSWEGO] Value of library and Ancestry resources > I continue to be amazed by the number of people who are so willing to > bash > Ancestry when it supplies so much excellent value for such a reasonable > cost. I completely agree...they hijack your search pulling you off the web pages you are on and causing constant irritation to any researcher. The minute I see Ancestry I am gone. No matter what is used for enticement my personal rule is never to go to their websites. It was a sorry day that rootsweb took our info and gave it to them. I feel the same way about Ancestry.com. They received a great deal of information from us about the LaRobardiere family for the other members of our family and now they charge them for the information. I will gladly share any information on the LaRobardiere, Belmor, Roy, Stevenson family that I have. I have some information on the extended members of these families. Hope I can help someone. Marilyn, there are Ostranders in my line. My 3G GM was Jane Ostrander Worden, daughter of Abraham Ostrander and Rachel DePue. Hello Russ, Thank you for helping with the Boolean question. I love the website and would read every word of it if I had time! Marilyn In a message dated 6/23/2006 6:13:55 AM Central Daylight Time, russxsprague@hotmail.com writes: At the Fulton site if you click on the 'Help FAQ' link, and scroll down quite a bit there is a nice section on Boolean search. FAQ is for 'Frequently Asked Questions'. I would not scroll down quickly though as there is quite a bit of useful info before you get to Boolean search. An example of Boolean search I found useful recently was 'Sprague w/5 married' and 'Sprague w/5 died' (use the words but not the quotes in your own searched. This means I want to find the word Sprague within 5 words of married or within 5 words of died. If I was searching for my own name I could search 'Sprague w/5 Russell'. Once you put the search term in use the drop down list to select 'Boolean' as the type of search. A hi speed connection can make a very nice difference. The site is images, not text and can be slow to load. Most public libraries will have pcs with hi speed connections. What you could do to become familiar with the way the search methods work is find something ahead of time on some page and then search for it using the different ways mentioned in the site help link. Hope this helps - Russ Sprague Kensington, Maryland (My Oswego and Cayuga County family names: Baggs, Buck, Demass/Dumas, Hamilton, Ostrander, Perkins, Stock, Upcraft, Van Vlack/Van Vleck)

Dave, You haven't stirred things up. There are many of us who feel that way about Ancestry.com for exactly those reasons. I don't mind paying fees where value has been added but Ancestry, Family Tree Maker and that ilk like to take your genealogy work and publish it as is for a profit without even validating it. They put no effort into it other than that needed to convince newbys to turn over all their efforts "so it will be safe for future generations" (to buy CT's from them.) You have to be a subscriber to gain access to your own data. Genealogy has been and largely remains an altruistic, sharing endeavor. If I've discovered something that you can use, I'll glaqdly give it to you. Maybe you will have something useful to me in return but maybe not. That's ok. You're welcome to use mine free of charge. Years ago Rootsweb was started as a labor of love on exactly that premise. It was run on a shoestring and was almost entirely supported by free will donations from we working genealogists. It quickly grew to be the largest genealogy database in the world and was strained to keep up. Ancestry.com stepped in at a critical point with an infusion of capital and saved it from oblivion. Roostweb has changed some but to Ancestry's credit, many of its useful features remain active. But I still don't like how they do business. If someone does not want to use any of ancestry's free service, one should avoid all of Rootsweb, the mailing lists, the WorldConnect database, the county web pages, the individual personal web pages provided free by Ancestry. A good share of the free information people are used to using is found on servers provided by Ancestry. Not everyone may be able to afford the full subscription, but for those who can, it is a wonderful service for those of us researching our families. I could not help nearly as many people as I do were it not for Ancestry. And, someone said this latest free offer did not require a credit card number. And ..... they do not take anyone's work -- the individual databases on WorldConnect can be withdrawn by an individual whenever they chose if they so choose. I was going to stay quiet on this issue, but do want to say that I have a subscription to the "basic" Ancestry databases, plus the censuses, and it is through these that I have been able to find so many of my own and my husband's ancestors, as well as helping countless others through the census lookups I do for strangers (some of whom have become wonderful email friends). Ancestry is not without its faults, and I do agree it seems expensive. However, if you compare the price of a subscription to the cost of ordering films from the Family History Centers, or traveling long distances to search actual documents, its a steal! ----- Original Message ----- From: "MScheffler" <mscheffl@twcny.rr.com> To: <NYOSWEGO-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, June 27, 2006 10:43 AM Subject: [NYOSWEGO] Ancestry services > If someone does not want to use any of ancestry's free service, one > should avoid all of Rootsweb, the mailing lists, the WorldConnect > database, the county web pages, the individual personal web pages provided > free by Ancestry. I've seen a few gripes about the Flash business but it is quite a resource for being volunteer run. If you don't have windows and don't want it, your local public library probably has a hi speed connection and you could use their machine. Some public libraries also have subscriptions to ancestry.com and/or HeritageQuest.com for library patrons. If the library has that and if you have a valid library card you can use those resources on line from home.
