    1. Re: [NYOSWEGO] Brittons Corners
    2. I don't know if this will be helpful but there was a Britton's Settlement in what is now Onondaga County. Quoting from "Our Town, Dewitt New York": The area now known as Collamer was first called "Britton's Settlement" in honor of the Archibald Britton family, which settled here in the 19th century and built a tavern on a stage coach route which followed an Indian gtrail over the high points of land south of Cicero Swamp. When the Erie Canal supplanted the old stage coach lines, commercial development moved south to the center of Dewitt township, and Britton's Settlement became a peaceful farming community. In 1849 the residents decided to apply for a Post Office and submitted the name "View Heights." The Post Office was approved but the name was deemed impractical, so the petitioners substituted the name "Collamer" in honor of Postmaster General Jacob Collamer. Needless to say, the name was approved this time, and became official in 1850. Good luck, Lucia

    3. You can research the issue by looking at Oswego Co land records - either at the court house or using the indexes & deeds on LDS microfilm. His patent may or may not have been recorded, but if he sold the land it should have been. To complete the picture you can do that for Columbia Co where you know he ended up living. Good luck. As a Revolutionary War Veteran. The info that I have says that Amos wanted to go by canoe across Lake Erie directly to Michigan. It is indicated that Hope King nixed that idea and then Amos began marking trees at Hastings for his Donation Land Claim to which he was entitledeas a veteran on the side of the United States. We his descendants only know that he left New Salem, Hampshire County in 1785 with two young sons of the 10 he is enumerated to have in the Census enumerations up to 1810. We do not know when he came to Oswego County at Hastings. We do know that he left this place and died in 1839 in Columbia County, NY. I would appreciate information on how to contact the Oswego County surrogate Court or to contact when our Amos King might have registered his claim if he did register it at all. Thanks for your time. 2. In response to this letter that I had asked for help. I am putting out the word to all of my elderly aunts and cousins for their input on the letter. I have only seen it at one of the family reunions. It took me several months to place our Amos in Hastings in your county and of his plan to remove to Michigan. It would help to know if an actual DLC was registered for the couple so that we can fill in the time line. We are holding our breath for the possibility that he first registered his claim and second sold it before leaving the county. The Columbia county census for New York seems to indicate that he was in or near Caanan in the Lebanon Springs Valley in 1800. New Lebanon was not a town of village until about 1810. Thanks everyone for your input. Daniel > Hi Daniel > > Since you have the letter it would be great to put in on the Mailing Lis > (word for word)t as per the Original. That would be helpful to anyone in the area that might be able to help you or go to the Court house or archvies to look information up for you. Did you send a photo copy of the letter to the Archives in Oswego County? This would be of the upmost interest to them and I am sure that they would be willing and ready to help you to obtain any information regarding this that they could find. Warm Regards Pat R

    1. [NYOSWEGO] MORGAN Family Photograph
    2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" an old photograph which is identified as Edith MORGAN. The photograph was taken at the Mulholland Studio in Oswego, New York. The photograph appears to have been taken in the early 1900's with Edith likely in her 50's at the time. Based on limited research I was able to locate a possible match in the 1920 census of Fulton, NY as follows: Editha MORGAN, age 67, a widow, born NY, parents born CT/NY, a Farmer I'm hoping to locate someone from this family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to her family. If you are a member of this family, or know someone who might be, please call me. Thanks, Shelley

    1. [NYOSWEGO] Reinterrment records
    2. Tammy Kocienski
    3. Is there anyone that can tell me where to look for records to see if someone was exhumed from Rural Cemetery and reinterred in St. Peter's Cemetery. I have already checked with both of the cemetery's offices and have had no luck there. Specifically I am trying to confirm the burial place of Lucius FRANCE (1883) and Edith ARDEN (1902). Rural Cemetery has records stating they were buried there but they are unable to locate the graves; there is a cliff where the graves are supposed to be, as if there was a landslide. St. Peter's Cemetery said they have no record of burial at all, there is just a monument with his name, along with some other family member's names who are definately buried in the plot; and they have no positive proof that he is there too. If they have in fact been moved from Rural it would have happened after 1902 because the ARDEN obit said burial would be in Rural. I have no other possible burial places for Edith ARDEN anywhere. I would appreciate any help or points in the right direction to solve this mystery. Tammy __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo!
