Yes but wasn't Oswego made up of Oneida and other county (s) so in 1812 it could have been Oneida? I don't have time to look it up now but if my memory serves me.........Jess At 08:05 PM 12/27/2006, you wrote: >Volney is in Oswego County >----- Original Message ----- >From: <Jpmandcm@aol.com> >To: <nyoswego@rootsweb.com> >Sent: Wednesday, December 27, 2006 4:54 PM >Subject: Re: [NYOSWEGO] Oswego County > > > > Thanks for the further information on Oswego County. Thanks for the further information on Oswego County. Our family history says that Ira D.Ives ( many greats ago grandfather) walked from Conneticut in 1812 and settled in Volney - Oneida County, NY. Carole Case Murphy searching: Ives, Case, Brand, Keller, Osborn all from Oswego County, NY area
Keith Perhaps you should name your Ancestor and a closer apporx date he was in Oswego County or why you know or assume he was there, so others who might be researching that Surname would be able to respond. Also, have you considered the possible factor that your Ancestor could have been a Loyalist or the Son or Daughter of a Loyalist? Pat R
Keith There were essentially no settlers in Oswego County until after 1790 when George Scriba got a huge patent of land from the state; probably the first settlers on his patent were around 1794-5. So anybody there earlier probably had no "ties" - e.g., military, traders. Even then, there were not many settlers until after 1810. The county was organized in 1816 from Oneida and Onondaga. I know of no list of those who purchased land in Scriba's patent. There are some early land records, but they seem to be mostly (all?) held in Oneida County. But at least a few of these are available as copies in the Oswego County records that I looked at when I visited. HI Keith I have no answer for you re your question below BUT I am also entertaining a similar issue. My ancestor Ezekial Griffin ( Griffis, Griffith) appeared in Oswego county in 1815. This was the first appearance of him in US though he was purportedly born in Rhode Island in 1790. I have always looked at Oswego's proximity to PEI and also how easy to traverse Lk Ontario. I have considered that his family may have returned to Canada at some point and then back to States after War of 1812. He may have been a Scot ( over the years it has become obvious to me that there were a lot marriage to Scots within our family tree) . I have never been able to connect him with an ancestry though I do have his marriage and descendency. I also am interested in such a list. Good luck and if you find one PLEASE share, it may open a door for many. I also am checking for more info. Your best bet for useful info might be to narrow your query to one or a few surnames of interest. Oswego county was formed in 1816. This is fairly indirect but you might want to search land records. If any of the people leaving Oswego county were landowners, seems like they might sell their land before moving to Canada. The period 1750 to 1825 includes the American Revolution, when some British sympathizers may have simply abandoned their land and fled to Canada. It could also help to find out which counties Oswego was formed from and on which dates. Some online searches may help. At all the various counties some of the oldest records available are land records, wills and probate records. They tend to be indexed in large books and easily searchable (unless lost in the proverbial courthouse fire!). In a message dated 12/25/2006 2:30:25 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, Keith Bull Is anyone aware of a list or document which shows names etc. of those individuals leaving Oswego to arrive in Upper Canada (Prince Edward County and area) at some point between 1750 and 1825 .. Loyalists were given acres of land in Canada, in the Niagara area, for their loyalty to the British during the Revolution. After the War, all they did was apply for it and then take an oath to the King of England. Even children and wives applied... John Honssinger was a private in Colonel Johnson's First Battalion of York fighting against the American's in the Rev. War. At its end he swore allegiance to King George of England and was granted 100 acres of land for his Military Service then also received for his wife Margaret (Steward) Honssinger and two children 200 acre's of land. This was granted to them by the Administrating Government of the Providence of Upper Canada. This land was located in the Niagara Area of Canada. I have also gotten Documents for Land Grants for a Wait Honssinger who is listed as the son of John Honssinger. The date July 13 of 1836 This Land was given to him as an award for his Fathers service and Loyalty during the War without aiding or assisting the enemy. This was also in the District of Niagara. I suggest you look at Loyalist records in Canada, that might be the reason they moved from NY. Sheila, NY
Actually Fort Ontario was the last fort held by the British in the thirteen colonies. It was not officially turned over by the British until 1796. Hard to imagine loyalists making a run for Canada. Yes you are on the list. Your email showed up for me as I am subscribed. I've notice recently that some list notes go to my 'junk' folder and I'm not sure why that happens. Amos King is my 4th great grandfather on my paternal grandmother's branch of the familiy. He is (then) a recently discharged veteran of the Revolution. All that I know came from a letter written by his grandson to a first cousin telling of his plans to canoe across Lake Erie with the destination in mind of Michiagan. He departed New Salem, Hampshire County (now Franklin County) Massachusetts with two infant sons. The letter says that he marked trees at Hastings when it was clear that his wife Hope would not be pleased with a canoe ride over the lake even if there was free land for the taking as was his right as a veteran. The census of 1800 indicates that they had departed Hastings and were ultimately at Canaan, in Columbia County, New York. Land records begin early there however we pick up the trail of land claim filings in 1804 and contiue to his death in 1839. What I believe I might be asking is the time frame for examining land claims in Oswego County pertaining to this time frame. If he filed for land as was his right and did he sell the land would be helpful. Another thing that might help is if he is listed in Oswego county for any of the New York or US Census enumerations. Thanks for you time. Daniel

Hi Tina, It's been along time since we've chatted and I'm certainly glad you took the time to visit my website and report some bad links. From what I can see the visitor counter is working ..... may be your system again?? Wondering if you might be able to help me out again. Please look at the attachment - specifically the first article on the left hand side - John C. O'Brien. He was one of the sons of my 3rd GGF and as you can see the article has been slightly chopped off on the left had side as well as way down at the bottom. Is there any possibility of you being able to optain a better copy? Hi All, Just wanted to let you all know that I've done some redesign and update work with my website. White Family Researcher, Amasa White, Jr., the sixth child of Amasa Daniel White and Polly Tyler was born September 9, 1838, at Sandy Creek, Oswego County, New York, appears in 1840 and 1850 living in Sandy Creek, with his mother and family. Amasa White, Jr., married Lydia Abia Taylor, September 25, 1859, and in June, 1860, is found living in the household of his older brother, Dennis White, in Monroeville, Lynn Township, Huron County, Ohio, where their first child, George Leon DeBourney White was born. In as much the third child of Amasa White, Jr., and Lydia Taylor was born in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio, in 1866, we felt that would be the most logical place to look. The Toledo City Directory for 1866 and 1867 indicate Amasa White was a farmer and lived in the first house in East Toledo. The 1864 and 1868 directories do not list Amasa White. We found the family in Toledo, Lucas County in 1870, with the name spelled Whight. The film is so poor and faint, it cannot be read with certainty. If anyone is interested in this White family, I would like to correspond with them. John at Sissom dot org John D. Sissom johnsissom@sbcglobal.net sola fida
