I had no problem finding the census films at the LDS library site. Go to library after getting to familysearch.org, then to catalogue, place search, type in New York, then click on census (top of list) and scroll down to Oswego (or other counties) and find the film notes to what you want. I have found these "5 - year) census very helpful because they list the family relationship and in 1865, the Civil War service and deaths. Good luck, Ruth Seibert Fresno, CA
My recollection from my last visit to the Oswego Co records office that 1905 was the last useful state census. Mabry Benson
Don't ask me why but I got a more complete listing of censuses for Oswego County when I entered County Name & state name in search boxes under location or place. NYGB has lots of books, searchable online, lots of census info online through Heritage Quest (which is indexed for some different years from Ancestry), also the New York Times (again, fully searchable by word). You also get the NYGB Record quarterly, a small journal that has wonderful articles on all sorts of things --- a recent Record has articles such as "The Halseys of Meigs County, Ohio; Otsego County, New York; and New Jersey", "Origins of the De Milt/De Mill(e) Family of New Amsterdam," "Deaths from the Lady's Magazine and Musical Repository, New York, 1801," etc. I joined this year, and have enjoyed very much being a member and finding information on ancestors. Hope this helps. -Ellen
I think if you have just one line of ancestors in NY, it would not be that useful for you. I live in Knoxville, TN, but have ancestors all over the western part of NY, and also the fingerlakes area. They have the census and books on line through Heritagequest. I guess you could use the census part for any state of the union. It is a great supplement to Ancestry.com, because if I can't find it at Ancestry, a lot of times I can find it on NYG&B... It also has a lot of the NY Times, but I found that difficult to use, and I have a high speed computer. Happy Hunting. It is best to do a location search on the Family History Library Catalog. I put in St. Lawrence & New York and got all the info the Family History Center in Salt Lake has on the subject, incl. about 10 censuses. If anyone is looking for pre -1860 abstracted data, try a county packet under publications: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nycnygs It's a compilation of up to 40 years of abstracting that county's records. It saves time, it saves research money. It's a check on your thorougness. It lets you redirect and focus your search stratedgy! It's a bargain even if you do not find an ancestor. You have it to refer to when you discover more ancestors. Hi Russ & List: I volunteer at my local Family History Center and we have most of the NY State censuses for Onondaga County available on permanent loan from Salt Lake City. I will check Familysearch.org to see if there is a way to search for them as a double check. Perhaps they were not microfilmed for that area. Hi Pate and Listers: Those of us who subscribe realize the value of the site. If or when you visit, you will be equally impressed with the library on the fourth floor and the nonbook resources on the third floor. On another point, family researchers should be aware that many libraries now now on the Internet have genealogy sections. Check with your local or county library and you may find much more than you ever expected. Key words are genealogy and history. You may find some nice surprises.
