Hi Nancy Thanks for sharing your site. There is always someone in need of a professional genealogist so I will save your web address. In fact, someone just contacted me last evening who may be a possible candiate. Another person named Everett is located in northern Michigan who may be interested as well. Her great grandfather, James Everett, cam from New York and doesn't know where to begin in finding him. Of course, whether she and her father would be interested or could afford to hire someone is beyond my knowledge. Incidentally, what is your fee structure? Thanks to Russ for an excellent description of how to find a film from the FHC. I am a volunteer at a family history center in Oregon, and I am also a non Mormon. So many folks feel that they have to be a member of the church, but I have been a volunteer and user of the Family History Centers for more than 20 years and I have never felt anything but welcome at any FHC no matter where it is in the country. Try them, you will find them friendly and helpful, some more than others, just like the rest of the world. We try to help everyone who comes into our little branch library and we mostly succeed. Hi Ken, About NYG&B, you say "It has a computer area where you can look at NYS census reports for each county." Are these computer images or do you use microfilm viewers? Thanks for the information. Virginia -----Original Message----- From: Ken Everard [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Thursday, June 26, 2003 1:59 PM To: [email protected] Subject: NYS & NYC Resources Nancy: Let me add another resource about which many people may not be aware. Nearly a month ago I learned that there is an organization called The New York State Genealogy and Biographical Society located in NYC on 58th street. Here's the web site (http://www.ngsgenealogy.org). Last week I spent several hours there to learn of the holdings. While you can obtain general information on the web site, your best bet is to become a member, which is a little steep, namely $60 a year. It has a computer area where you can look at NYS census reports for each county. SNIP
Here is an interesting website http://www.census-online.com/links/ Check it out, Please I am having trouble with acrobat reader so....
I don't think I've seen anyone post this information yet; forgive me if I'm duplicating stuff. The Ontario County Records and Archives Center (RAIMS) has the NY state census records available. They also have indexes, broken down by township, for the years 1850-1875. I haven't ordered any census records yet, but have found Mary Jo Lamphear (main contact) to be very helpful with probate records, etc. I live in Denver and can't get to Ontario very often and have found this to be a great way to locate information. I can find a bunch of things on their indexes and make requests for specific documents. Here's the link to their census indexes: http://raims.com/censusmenu.html Hope that helps! ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, June 29, 2003 9:03 AM Subject: Re: Ny Census- Oswego county 1915 not included > Hi Russ and All > > Here is the URL for State Census that exist for each County for New York > State. Someone posted the question 'what to do when you see an LDS microfilm of interest listed on the internet' and I'm not sure if anyone answered that. From www.familysearch.org <http://www.familysearch.org/> , click on 'Find a family history center near you..' Follow the links to find the FHC (Family History Center) closest to you. An address and phone number will be listed. You can call the FHC re what hours they are open. They are volunteer run, they welcome everyone (you do not have to be a Mormon/LDS) and they are free but welcome donations. There is a small handling charge to have film delivered to the FHC where you can then research it on their microfilm reader. I don't recall the exact charge but last I knew it was under $5. The centers typically have Saturday hours and at least one weekday where they are open later (til 8 p.m. or so) for the not yet retired among us. They will notify you when the film arrives and then keep it for (I think) 3 weeks. If a film is requested often enough I believe they make it permanent at the FHC where it is requested. There are typically many other resources at an FHC. They may have resources specific to their geographic location plus books, cd's and other material covering the entire U.S. The volunteer staff are generally very knowledgeable and helpful. You may find brochures about resources outside the domain of the LDS (local genealogy clubs, events, and resources). Hope this helps - Russ Sprague Kensington, Maryland
Thanks to all who responded - and there were many. I was able to find what I wanted. Starting at www.familysearch.org, click on 'search the catalog', then 'place search' then (and here is where I made a mistake yesterday), fill in county name of your choice on top *and* for 'part of' fill in whatever state that county is in. I filled in 'st lawrence' for the top and 'new york' for the bottom. The search returned 'St. Lawrence county' as part of NY and listed under that were various resources including the NY state censuses. Ok. Possibly the LDS did not microfilm the 1915 census for St. Lawrence county. I know it exists because I have seen it and the 1925 census at the county offices in Canton. I hope some of you Oswego readers will bear with me as I discuss St. Lawrence county on your Oswego list. I jumped onto some other thread about the NY state census. Thanks for the note - this is a little off topic for Oswego county because I really want to see what (if any) NY state censuses are on LDS microfilm for St. Lawrence county. I don't want the URL just handed to me. I want to know, starting with www.familysearch.org, which links to click on and what to type into search boxes to come up with which NY state censuses (if any) are on LDS microfilm for St. Lawrence county. Once I have the correct set of links, I can answer questions about it on the St. Lawrence county list where I am the moderator. To date, with the few microfilm searches I've tried, I generally come up with nothing. Hi Cousin: When I do a place search under Family History Library Catalog, top box "Oswego", bottom box "New York", click search, select New York, Oswego, I get censuses from 1820 thru 1925 with some missing. Many censuses were not filmed due to poor quality or budget restrictions if they did not add a whole lot to those chosen. It's hard to describe just how frustrating this can be and I have tremendous admiration for the LDS in general. I went to catalog, then place then 'ny' and it came up with two odd references. If I do place then 'new york' then scroll down a list, I did see a link for the New York state census. I just went back to the list of NY censuses, clicked on 1915 and expected to see a list of counties with St. Lawrence county included. I see Bronx, Broome, Erie and Columbia listed but *none* of the dozens of other NY counties one might expect and no 'page forward' or indication of more records. I'll re-read some of these note posted and revisit this issue tomorrow. I appreciate all the notes. To be honest, this is a lame, non-intuitive search mechanism which would likely mislead many people who try to use it. This has happened every time I've tried to come up with microfilm info at the LDS site. They should let the general public try some searches, see how the public does it and make the results fit. I'm not new to this, I am a computer programmer by trade and have done various searches for years.
