Hi Jeff, I believe you can get the information from the Oswego Co Office Bldg listed below. There would be a charge for copies and possibly mailing. You can also check to see if Sambupco is able to obtain them. He does wills, etc., for a fee, but also has lists of name for all counties with Will #'s so you might want to check for that also. That url, which can be found on the Links Page is: http://www.sampubco.com/. It might be quicker to contact the County Bldg. Good luck in your research. Laura Oswego County Office Building 46 E. Would anyone on this list be in a position to make a copy of an Intestate Letter of Administration for David Hall or provide me with instructions on how to obtain a copy directly. The webpage on the Oswego County site says it is found in Book A: March 1816-1831, dated Jan 31, 1820, on page 12 located in the Oswego County Surrogate Court. Thanks for any help, Jeff
Dear Jerry, While I don't have information on Elijah specifically, I can trace my family to Henry and Miriam (Marian in my source, probably wrong). Their daughter Emeline C. Hale married my great-grandfather's brother John Edwin Howard. My facts show that she died in Rochester, Monroe County, NY, but that she was buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Town of Volney, Oswego County. You might have a look at the following link, if you haven't come across it yet: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyoswego/cemeteries/mtpleasntwestvol3.html Elijah does not seem to have been buried with his parents, so it at least seems likely that he reached adulthood. Hopefully this information isn't completely redundant with respect to what you've collected. Good luck! Aaron Howard (son of David Howard, son of Donald H. Howard, son of James Seth Howard, brother of John Edwin Howard, who married Emeline C. Hale, daughter of Henry Hale and Miriam Marian Chines) [email protected] wrote: Seeking any information on Elijah, son of Henry Hale (1826 - 1864) and Miriam (Chivers) Hale/Parker. Thank you and your husband. I realize this was a hard decision. I have lived across the field (ON the Johnson Road) with my grandmother. Her property extended to the field in front of the Poor House. I have visited with many residents and would swim in the mill pond, fish below the dam for trout, many great memories. My wife is a genologist and visits the Oswego County Historical Society which is open and the personnel are a great help. Being born in Oswego and living in Oswego Town (Oswego Center) I thank you for allowing access to the records by out of state people. I now live in Virginia but make the trek to Oswego yearly. Again Thanks - Great Decision. [email protected]
Hello One and All, I would like to thank each of you for responding to my email regarding where the Oswego Records Book should reside. It was a very difficult decision for my husband and I to make, but we have made one. My husband and I were married 33 years on the 4th of July and this is my anniversary present from him. When I saw the email regarding the book this is what I asked him for and he made sure that I got it!! Thank you Barry! My reason for donating the book to back to Oswego instead of keeping it is: My grandmother was from Oswego and my grandparents meet, fell in love and were married there. In fact I believe I still have family there. I have donated the book to the Oswego County Genealogy County Society, and requested that they find a place for the book to be located. As we do not live in or near Oswego, we were not certain where the majority of the genealogists would look for information, and all the locations mentioned were worthy places. The Richardson - Bates House Museum is a wonderful place, but appointments have to be made to do family research. My husband and I thought this might be a draw back to other people as I found it to be. (Often we just took off and did not know when we would be in Oswego.) The Library was another location that I thought of as place were it would help other Genealogists. Due to the fact that I was only at the library once, I could not remember what their local history section was like. Lastly, the records department was also on my list but the hours were limited to weekdays which I thought could be draw back. So, I decided to give it to the Genealogy Society and they could decide for me. Thank you one and all, Diane
Hi This appears to be where the majority of historical records, documents and etc of Oswego County are located and I would say it would be a good location to consider when donated the book. It is also open to the public so they would be able to view it. Richardson-Bates House Museum The Oswego County Historical Society's collection of nearly 13,000 artifacts, documents and photographs traces the significant history of the area, and is located in the Richardson-Bates House at 135 East Third Street in Oswego. The house was built sometime between 1867 and 1871 and is a fine example of Tuscan Villa Victorian architecture. The entire upstairs of the house is dedicated to the preservation of local history. The downstairs is preserved as the Richardson family knew it, with 95 percent of the original furnishings of the period. Maxwell Richardson was an attorney, real estate broker, and two-term mayor of Oswego. His house reflects his wealth and position as a civic leader. The museum is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on weekends from 1 to 5 p.m. It is closed Mondays and holidays. (315) 343-1342. Admission charged. Regards Pat R
Diane, What a great thing for you to do. I live in Oswego and I would suggest you may want to donate it to the Oswego County Records Room. Barbara Dix is in charge there and she is the Oswego County Historian. Her e-mail address is [email protected] Her work phone number is 315-349-8460 and her fax number is 315-349-8458. I would love to see it go there. She is a very caring and helpful person and they are constantly acquiring records to add to their collection. Thank you Carolyn Reitano
Thank you Kevin. I have all of that information but Elijah remains elusive. I found it listed on ebay, but the auction ended on 7/5. It sold for 241.00. -----Original Message----- From: Russ [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, July 06, 2003 10:36 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Oswego Poorhouse Records This will generate some comments for some time. I would give it (or make a copy of it and give the copy to) the 'poorhouse lady' who has freely made many records from many states available to all on the internet. If you were to give it to her with the stipulation that she in turn donate it to an Oswego historical society, I'm betting she would accept that and that could also benefit many people. I looked for it briefly on ebay but either didn't search correctly or it was bought and de-listed when I looked. How many pages is it? Roughly how many names in it? What did it finally sell for? The historical society is a great place to share info but the hours are not that great. You more or less have to make an appointment to see someone or something there. The records dept which is a separate entity is open from 9 to 5 week days except holidays no appointment needed, would be the most beneficial for all to extrapolate info there. Walk in any time. Always some one there to help with your search too. That's very informative. Thanks for sending it. The guess that it was a 'poorhouse' is not true - it was more of a society for the benefit of widows and children of soldiers and sailors. Interesting. Rusty: Sorry Rusty--my e-mail address is not [email protected] . I don't know who you e-mailed but it was not me, and I did not get any e-mail from you. I really wanted that book as we have family in Oswego from that time frame, but it got too expensive for me. I would have given it to the Historical Society (after I finished going over it) as the lady that runs the place is a remarkable person. I have met her many times. The only reason I entered into the bidding in the first place was because of an alert from the "poorhouse lady" about the availability on e-bay. I did not know about it before hand, and would not have known about it without her alert. I had not gone into the e-bay site in quite awhile. Oh yes, I do know of a Dorothy Quebbeman but she died in early June. I daresay her daughter deleted your e-mail probably wondering what this was all about. That Dorothy lived in Indiana--I do not. Have I learned a lesson? Probably not. I will bid on something I want, whether I want it for myself or to donate to an organization. If I HAD received an e-mail alerting me to the fact that you or someone else wanted to donate it, I might have backed off, but then that isn't really fair to the person that had it to sell, is it? Dorothy

Dorothy ([email protected]), Had you opened my personal E-mail (dated 3 Jul 2003) to you and read it (rather than simply deleting it without reading it) you would have found that I too was bidding on the Oswego Charity Records for the purpose of donating it to an appropriate repository. In your haste to delete mail (that even had the valid subject line, "Oswego Charity Book"), you pushed the price of the book up substantially. I think, if you go back and read your recently deleted mail, you will see that about which I am speaking. I finally dropped out of the bidding as I determined (correctly) that you were not going to respond to anyone...so that we might have purchased the book at a more reasonable price. I had contacted Linda Crannell, (The Poorhouse Lady)...and as you can see from her correspondence, she tried to inform you and others. I am happy that it was purchased with the intent to preserve it. But I think that had you contacted Linda up front, it could have been done at less cost. Hope this is a lesson to all. Sincerely, Rusty Okoniewski Orlando, FL
I also believe the best location for the Poorhouse Record book is at the Oswego County Records Center. Barbara dix is the Oswego County Historian.
