To All Fellow Subscribers We should all look at this as an indication of what will probably affect many other County Historians in New York State and other States throughout the USA in the near future. If one looks at the how the Administration of the NY State Historian Office is set up it shows us that this is not a priority with our current government. In general throughout the USA we have seen drastic changes in how and what will be kept as County and State Records and also many changes in the availability of records to the public. Our history and heritage is slowly being swept away from us. Writing and supporting the Oswego County Historian is something that we should all do (I support this), but we should be doing this across the Country before it is too late to change. Our Genealogy Societies, Historical Societies and Lineage Organizations should all be fighting to avoid this. Regards Pat R
Well said. After just having been to Oswego County four weeks ago I found Barbara Dix to be an asset to the county, and a great ambassador for the area. Everyone should write to offer support for this woman. I wish all counties (mine included) had a county historian. If utilized like you have suggested they can indeed generate many more dollars than they cost. We all need to think out of the box and realize the positive contributions this position makes to the Oswego County area. Leona Frost Berkley, MI
I realize that in this day and age, teaching history has become a rare occurrence. Some of the people I work with aren't even sure when the two World Wars happened. The storage and preservation of our past is becoming more urgent every day. I haven't been doing family research for very long, but Barbara Dix has been extremely helpful to me. There are always other people at the office when I am there. It is a very busy place. Before the position of Town Historian is eliminated, please give some thought to the people who depend on her. Will these records be lost because no one who cares will be there to locate preserve and them? Will Oswego County become the county with no past? Please, do check the guest register and see how many people visit in a year, and yes, they DO spend money in the town. Thank you for your attention Jean.
Most places I have researched charge a fee. NYSHA Library charges $9 per person unless you are a mamber of NYSHA. Philadelphia Historical Libray charged a fee pre day . as well as others. Would Oswego County be satisfied with an income in that way.? Don't lose Barbara Dix !!!! Hi All When I went to Oswego ( about 10 years ago ) I went for 3 days with my daughter to search records. I had no idea of just what was available and Barbara went out of her way to help me. I was floored by the amount of help she gave me. No question was too trivial to answer. She even found records for me to search that I never thought of. As a result of her help I visited the cemetery where my great grandparents are buried near Mexico. The house they lived in when they first got married about 1850. (Joseph LITTLE & Eliza Jane WELCH )at New Haven. I also visited a cousin I had never met before and one I had not seen in over 50 years. I got a number of photocopies of documents (very reasonable charges) from Barbara as well as a great feeling about the people I met . The lady in the "family" farm house was wonderful . She took us in her home and showed us around the house. What a feeling to be inside the home of your great grandparents who lived there over 100 years ago. I think our expenses came to about $100.00 but it was well spent and I don't begrudge one cent of it. I had a fantastic time visiting and was fortunate enough to get more information than I thought I ever would. All because of Barbara P.S. I also spent money on gifts to bring home for my grandchildren. Please everyone, send out your emails ASAP to help support Barbara Dix's position. Thanks again! D.T. my copy sent to [email protected] Mr. Lyman, I've recently learned that you are planning on relieving Ms. Dix of her position as Oswego town historian. I'd like to say that I think that is a very wrong move. Barbara Dix has been an asset to Oswego County for many years and has always been helpful and productive in her position. She is a most beneficial person to keep ON your staff, regardless of your budget cuts. She has the attention of most of the internet activity that happens for Oswego Co., meaning genealogy, the 2nd largest usage of the internet. She is the "icon" representing Oswego Co. I can not say enough good about her and what she has done to create more business of doing genealogical research in Oswego Co. to people all over the United States as well as in some foreign countries. Please re-consider this budget cut, because you will be losing more that you may know or realize. Barbara is a wonderful asset. She has been loyal to her position all these years. Please don't send out a message to all of us researchers that you can just discard her loyalty, her devotion to her position and her pleasant contact with the general public. Barbara Dix is the keystone to keep people in touch with Oswego County. Dianne Thomas a former resident of Oswego Co.
Dear Mr. Lyman: I recently heard that the County Historian position is earmarked for removal from the upcoming Oswego County budget. While I recognize the managerial need to make cuts to balance your budget for the upcoming fiscal year, I would ask you to strongly reconsider the position of "County Historian." I can assure you that that single office provides many valuable services to your organization and to the residents of Oswego County. Moreover, I can also assure you that many people from all over the world make a conscientious decision to travel to Oswego County to research family history as a direct result of this office and specifically, Barbara Dix, YOUR County historian. I realize you have not resided in Oswego County very long...and may not be fully aware of the many services, time and irreplaceable knowledge this office provides the County, the State and the Nation. Genealogical and other historical researchers bring needed dollars into your economy. They dine, stay in hotels, visit attractions, etc. Perhaps you might consult with your local tourism department before you cut this position from the budget. You could even work with the State of New York Tourism Office to publicize this service, arrange for tours of cemeteries, town historian offices, monuments, Fort Ontario, County and town record storage rooms, etc. With some "thinking outside the box," you could make the County Historian's office an Oswego County attraction with the capability of helping to generate revenue. One might also consider some regular escorted "field trips" to points of historical interest sponsored by the county. These could also bring in some modest revenue. For example, the Underground Railroad tour in Oswego County could be an attraction all by itself. A bus tour stopping at several sites...with optional bed & breakfast stopover would, if properly marketed, generate revenue that could be applied to the County Historian's office expenses. Or better yet, endow a fund to provide these important services for the generations to follow. In my opinion, you are "missing the boat" if you cut this position from your budget. You should be looking for ways to INCREASE her budget rather than cutting it. It would be Oswego County's loss in so many ways if this comes to pass. Sincerely, Rusty Okoniewski Orlando, FL

I suspect that the ONLY thing likely to persuade the "number crunchers" & "bottom-liners" will be to provide evidence of how much money is brought into the community because of genealogy tourism. Can someone poll motels, etc. to see if they will hazard a quess (or maybe even keep statistics) about how many guests nights per year may be genealogy related? Can any of you who visited to do research include information about what you spent "in county" on gas, motels, meals, etc.? Has the historian and/or historical society hosted meetings/conventions where people from outside the community came in ... and (how'd you guess) ... SPENT MONEY! Then ... a few testimonials stating that the opportunity to work with a knowledgable and available historian was the attraction which brought them there will help. Obviously, the implication ought to be that WITHOUT an historian this genealogy tourism will be lost. Could Ms. Dix have kept a log of people from out-of-town whom she served? Maybe that could be translated into tourism consequences. Hi everyone, Barbara Dix the town Historian for Oswego Co. has recently found that she is on the list to be terminated because of budget cuts. She needs our support, as she has been SUCH an asset to all of us and her reputation as being such a caring and devoted person as well as a representative of the Oswego Co. gov't, should not be allowed to go by the wayside without letting her superiors know how valuable a person, an asset that she IS and has been to the county of Oswego. http://www.oswegocounty.com/legislature/directory/officials.html So, I urge you to call the county administrator, Stephen P. Lyman at 315 - 349 -8235 or write to him at [email protected] and tell him how wonderful an asset Barbara Dix has been and that she should not be let go. Please, it is imperative to get the word out and to make contact either by phone or by email. Thanks for your time. Dianne Thomas
Rusty: Well said. You addressed the point extremely well. I will long remember the trip my husband and I took from Florida to Albany, N.Y. to go to the Archives there, only to find out "the Library is closed this afternoon and tomorrow because of budget constraints." It made my blood boil. Needless to say we did not spend two nights in Albany, did not eat in their restaurants, and haven't been back since. Get rid of some useless politicians and keep the library and archives open. We have made many trips to Oswego doing genealogy, and Barbara Dix is the jewel in their crown as far as we are concerned. That lovely woman never met a stranger and would go out of her way to help. Dorothy from Gainesville, Florida
For those of us who might have an interest in the evolution of poorhouses in this country, you may find the article in the current issue of HISTORY MAGAZINE, Sept. 2003, to be of interest. "The Poorhouse in the Land of Plenty" by Guylaine Spencer is quite thorough. The origin of the poorhouse started in 1536 under King Henry VIII and lasted until their ultimate disappearance during the early 1900s when they were probably replaced by public housing projects and government means for supporting the poor. A website is mentioned that may already have been mentioned on this site: www.poorhouse.com. Ken > You are welcome to come and see the "Poorhouse Journal" anytime you want at the Records Center off 481 in Oswego 9 to 5 weekdays except holidays. We are very grateful to Diane & Barry Colby for their generous donation. Words can not say enough to say how much we appreciate this. We need more people like this to further the research of our ancestors instead of the greedy money hungry ones. Don't get me wrong I'm not against researchers getting paid for their time and expenses but these paid sites that all of a sudden say if you want this additional information it will cost you X amount of dollars more.
Hi Pat, I have never been to the old South Jeff location, but yes, it is my understanding that where they are now is down the street from where they were formerly located. They are still on Church Street in a large brick house next door to the Post Office. They are planning an open house for their anniversary in November if all goes according to plan. Hello, Is there anyone, who might be in Oswego County that could tell me if there are plans to restore the damage done by vandals to the Lewis Corner Cemetary. From what I understand about half of the damaged stones are the Buel stones from the early 1800's, including my GGGGG-Grandmother Sarah (b.1732 d.1807). I would greatly appretiate any information. -- Mike Buell Fairport, NY
Hello Mike Sounds like a wonderful trip. Just like the ones I like to make to the North Country. I also travel through Oswego and Jefferson County archives, but also have to include Lewis and St Lawrence. The people volunteering in these archives are wonderful. You made me a little homesick. Mike you mentioned that the South Jefferson Archives had moved. When and where did they move to? The last few years they were in the old historical brick homestead on Church St close to the downtown area, next to the Dollar Store. They had done a great deal of work in the past few years on that building. Are we talking a new location? Regards Pat R
