    1. Re: Letters to legislature supporting Barbara Dix
    2. Carol A. Riggall
    3. List, I have just received another email from Ted Jerritt, clerk of the Oswego County Board of Legislators informing me that he would be happy to read my letter to the Board re: Barbara and hoping it won't be too long. So, please keep your letters brief and to the point, focusing only on Barbara, her accomplishments on behalf of the county and what losing her will mean to them and to us. At this point, we don't want them to lose patience with us and not read the letters. Thanks again, Carol

    1. Barbara Dix Job Cut
    2. Carol A. Riggall
    3. Dear List, I have read all your letters and agree wholeheartedly about Barbara Dix. But, we are in error about sending our letters to Stephan Lyman, County Administrator and BUDGET OFFICER! Mr. Lyman has made his decision and the majority of the County Ways, Means and Budget Committee and the Personnel Committee have chose this budget to present to the Full Legislature (yesterday) for their consideration, to discuss, modify, reject, etc. These are the people who will make the ultimate decision. I have been watching the coverage of this topic on our local newscast (Syracuse) and it would seem that Mr. Lyman has some serious opposition already on the Board. Two Legislators, in particular, Michael Kunswiler, who is also a member of the Ways, Means, and Budget Committee and James McMahon, a member of the Personnel Committee. THIS LEGISLATURE WILL DECIDE THE FATE OF THE LIST OF PERSONNEL CUTS NEXT WEEK! WE DO NOT HAVE MUCH TIME! THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE ALREADY SENT LETTERS TO MR. LYMAN, PLEASE SEND COPIES TO THE FULL LEGISLATURE AND THE REST OF YOU, FORGET ABOUT LYMAN AND ALSO SEND TO THE LEGISLATURE. Letters (email is great, because our time is short) should be addressed to the OSWEGO COUNTY LEGISLATURE C/O THEODORE JERRITT, CLERK OF THE BOARD, AND ASK THAT YOUR LETTER BE READ AT THE START OF THE MEETING ON AUGUST 14th, (this next THURSDAY). Mr. Jerritt's email addy is: [email protected] IN THE MEANTIME, KEEP ABREAST OF WHAT THEY ARE DOING BY READING THE OSWEGO DAILY NEWS ONLINE. http://www.oswegodailynews.com Also, Steve Yablonski, Oswego Bureau Chief for the Daily News, should be contacted to do a story on Barbara's contributions in the Oswego paper. Her son's story appeared in the Fulton edition, you'll notice. The above is the most efficient way to get our voices heard by the people who will ultimately make the cuts! I do not live in Oswego County, but have been a county employee (retired now) in Madison County, who worked with the County Legislature and it's committees in negotiating employee contracts. If we had known about this sooner, Mr. Lyman would have been the one to talk with, but, it's too late for that now. Thanks for listening and PLEASE, stuff their INBOX! [email protected]

    3. I was talking to Paul Lear Historic Site Manager for Fort Ontario and he said that Mr. Lyman is the best to contact about Barbara Dix. He just shook his head in disbelief. Some people think genealogy and history are unimportant and take the who cares attitude. They better wake up! It is a valued tool to plan the future. Although I don't have to convince you of this. The Daughters of the Union Veterans of the Civil War tent 56 out of Ontario, NY are having a special memorial (with the Mayor and all) service August 9th at noon in the Washington Square ( for us older ones it is the East Park) by the Civil War Monument, they ask me to say a few words about the Monument I might have to add a little in there about this. Maybe see some of you there? I'll be the short one in Civil War dress. After all the Civil War Monument has been all but forgotten just because of the people that could care less about history and genealogy. I'm pushing to have something done about the upkeep of it. Rosemary Nesbitt and Fred Crisafulli are backing me fully. Fred Said that was the reason he had the Gold Star Mothers stone removed and placed in the Linear Park, just because of the lack of care. We must start caring for these things of the past too. Sorry I'm rambling on but Barb is a friend of mine and our advisor for the OCGS and this makes me saddened and upset. 3. I'm looking for any information on a George W. Appleby b. 1799 who was married to a Polley ?? about 1844. They lived in Williamstown and Ithica, where their children were born before moving on to Ohio after 1830. I've found them in Amboy in the 1830 Federal Census, but that's it. Their children are George L. Appleby b. 27 Aug 1822 Joseph Appleby b. 1824 Henry N. Appleby b. 1828 Lorenzo Appleby b. 28 Feb 1834 Would anyone know where to point me to look for this information. It's obvious that Barbara Dix will not be able to help me, or others now. I've written and sent my letter to the people mentioned. Thank you for your time, Janet

    3. As a disabled person (from birth) I am really upset with this government - no one seems to care about the things 'the people' co-ersively and some freely give their money to support. I wish people would band together to let politicians know that we are fed up with their huge salaries (like why do ex presidents get such huge retirement plans? I doubt they 'need' it). The lack of regard they have for the 'typical' taxpayer is in humane and many countries are aware of this ... I personally think since 'we' and our ancestors gave 'this information' to the government so they can take out money, we should have free access to the information (for our families edification and or necessitate - medical issues are not things to take with a sniffle...). I only found out a couple of years ago by finding my biological father why I was born with a deformed and dislocated hip. So far, I have had seven hip operations. My spine is deteriorating - my right hip now needs surgery and I'd like to know why I came down with Multiple Sclerosis... what genetic issues come to play here? Genealogy might give me some answers and reduce my out of pocket medical expenses. I can't afford insurance so my medical care is inferior... knowledge of my families genealogy is not just a hobby to me. Will the county end up like the ones in Illinois where it is almost impossible to find any information on genealogy? If so, it is a sad time for Oswego County. A wonderful past Volney historian, Byran Rowlee, has helped me so much with great records of Mt. Peasant cemeteries, especially the Ives connections and his is simply a love of genealogy and helping people. When all the "knowledge" is gone, what do we do then? Barbara is not just your Town Historian, she is also Oswego's Good Will Ambassador! On July 23, I had the pleasure of meeting Barbara for the first time when I donated the Poorhouse Records to the City of Oswego. On her own time, she came to the restaurant were the Oswego Genealogy Society took my husband and I for dinner, as she wanted to meet us. The next day we went to the records department to drop of the book and met Barbara again. This time she was on the job. Barbara is a very warm and caring person, and this attitude is also carried over to her work ethics. Barbara cares about the records that she is responsible for and it shows. The storage area is the cleanest records holding area I have ever been to! She explained a numbering and labeling system that has been put in place to retrieve records. She also explained how the records are protected from water damage. My husband and I drove from Buffalo, New York to Oswego and we stayed for two nights in one of the hotels on the waterfront. Because we stayed during Harborfest, we paid a normal nights rate and the next night the room rate more than doubled. We ate two dinners in Oswego, two breakfasts, and two lunches. In addition to the stores that I shopped in, I spent about $100 for death certificates for my great, great relatives. This $100 is almost pure profit as this took someone all of about 10 minutes from the time the documents were retrieved until they were photocopied. We decided as long as we were there, we drove up to Malone, New York and Ft. Covington, New York. Other areas that my family came from. We have not gotten our credit card bill yet, but I think all in all we spent a nice chunk of cash on this little trip. At each stop I knew right where to go because Barbara gave me the names and numbers of folks to help. Other Town Historians! Please find the money to keep this very important position filled! Thank you for taking the time to read my email. Diane Colby --part1_163.243495dc.2c644d79_boundary--
