    1. City/County Government

    3. I could see the handwriting on the wall, and it read just as I thought. Oswego County, New York is no different than Alachua County, Florida, be it the city government or the county government. When the "powers that be" make up their minds to do something, the handwriting is already engraved on the wall. Oh, they listen very politely, thank you for speaking your piece, and then vote as they had planned all along. I have rarely seen them change their mindset on anything. But there is a light at the end of the tunnel--a lot of them are no longer there come next election. There is a Day of Reckoning--just do not get complacent and forget. If Barbara Dix wants to open up her own genealogy business, I have a copy of "The History of Oswego County" I will gladly donate if she wants it. Dorothy Baker

    3. Does this mean that they are all going to lose their jobs? Barbara also? What a shame that they couldn't even table for a month and take another look around where to cut corners. Were you able to read any of the letters written in defense? Well I hope all the voters in Oswego County remember this when elections come upin November. When does this new ruling take effect? What will happen to all of the records? Can the Historical Society and Genealogical Society get access to the records so that they will continue to be available? Even giving the Legislature ideas didn't seem to help. What a shame that they are so narrow minded that they wouldn't look at alternatives. Marilyn I would like the address of the ones who voted against the people (18) of them. I wish to write them to let them know how I feel. Perhaps if we all let them know that their jobs will end come November they will have second thoughts. Since I am not a voter in Oswego County I want them to know what else they are going to be doing besides cutting jobs. They in effect have doomed Oswego County. 3. I am sorry I could not get back to you sooner, my power has been out like many others. This was an omen of what was to come and our future here in Oswego County. At this point in my life I am ashamed of being a Republican. I would go to being Independent but if I do I can't be an inspector for the polling place and there aren't enough to man them and I feel this would hamper our right to vote as we don't have enough people to go around as it is. You do have to be of the Republic or Democratic Party. This is wrong in my opinion as it furthers the illusion of a 2 party system. I personally would take a cut in my pay to minimum wage if it helped. If they would open up to more party's we might have more people applying to do the job. I'm getting off on a tangent but this government is no longer for the people or by the people but it is of the governments own plans. The room was filled with concerned people. Not one of them deserved to loose their job. Numerous speakers got up and ask if it could be tabled for a month or so. Lets talk about this to see if there are any other places to cut was the plea. We the people rights were squelched by the Majority leaders or at least tried to by putting demands on us of we can't do this or we can't do that. Example: Steve Lymans name came up more than once so we were told we couldn't mention names. Our pleas went on deaf ears as they were set in how they would vote. Kunswiler was our night in shining armor standing up to the majority dragon. The vote was 18 yes for the proposal and 7 NO. The list I am giving now are the ones to vote for in the coming elections. I tried to get on the County site but to no avail to add the names of the ones who voted for the proposal . 3. No this won't do away with Barbs' job. It will take quite a long time for her to put these records online and also someone has to maintain the site and add new records as they become available. Just think she has what a two- three hundred years worth of records? I have a cousin who works with the Michigan Library and it took her and a few others quite a long time just to put the 1870 census on line. Look at the DiBean Marriage list for Michigan on Line. They have listed all of the marriages they can find and they are still inputting them three years later. Since Barbara is the head of this department she would be needed more than ever as she is the one who knows what and where and how everything should be placed on line. The State of Illinois is doing this at this time. They project at least a ten your time frame to just get everything on line at the very least and that is for one county only. Barb is the most qualified person to put this info online if they should want to go that way. They could also charge a small fee to access these records in person also if they do not want them on line. But by putting them online everyone will have access to them not just the ones who can afford to travel there to look at them. When I first started research on the web I signed up for Kindred Connections.com site and to get an hours free use I would have to transcribe records to their site. This worked very well also. The LDS has put their info online and it hasn't cost any jobs in Utah. 3. Putting the records online would surely do away with Barbs job. That would give them all the more reason to get rid of her. Too many machines and computers are taking over jobs already keeping the personal touch out of it. The York Penn Historical Society charges a small fee of I believe $5 each time or you can become a member with a yearly dues of $20 the last time I was down there to do research . Of course this can get confusing. I am in the Oswego County Genealogy Society ($15 membership dues) which is seperate from the records center. Maybe we could up our dues to $25 and give $10 to the Records Center. I'd be willing to do it. Then you have the Historical Society too which is seperate too. But the best place for records is definitely The Record Center with Barb Dix. I am posting an e-mail from the Oswego Library Committee I just received that speaks for itself: Marilyn Rowsey Dirk Hello all- Barb Dix's position is also on the chopping block at the Oswego County Legislative meeting. Please call your county representative to voice your concern and opinion. It is only a $23,000. position and she has brought in over a half million in grants. Who will run the Records Center??? It is a crazy time.

    2. I totally agree with the fact the the prisoners in your county jail get better treatment than the people who want to find their ancestors. Cable TV , 3 meals a day, and clean? facilities is probably better than some of them get at home. Lets cut oout the cable tv and make them work for their priveleges. If they can earn the right to watch--let them watch a religious station. They do nothing all d ay but watch tv anyway. So make it difficult for them and KEEP BARBARA DIX!!! Jean

    3. Yes I realize that Genealogy is an expensive hobby. But we all must face the facts here. In order to keep thoses records available we as genealogists are going to have to start paying up to keep the records available. I live on a limited income so I know that it is sometimes hard to pay but I also know that if I want to keep doing this hobby I am going have to pay also. I do look ups also and I travel quite a bit to do the look ups for free too. I have driven a lot of miles just to take a picture of a cemetery stone for someone who lives out of state and will never get here either. But we are going to have to pay somewhere down the road and yes it is becoming a major thing today. As I said I pay quite a bit for memberships but I also use those memberships to help others who can't afford them. I am willing to do look ups for anyone who doesn't have a membership to any one of the the ones I have. I also volunteer to put records online also. We all can do that from right at home with our computers. Although there are many who don't have microfilm/microfiche readers at home I do know of people who put info online by simply taking the info to their local library and using their readers to write or copy images and then bring them home to put online. I spend a couple hours each day transcribing microfilm for another state. The state sent me the film to transcribe and I do it. Genealogy is expensive in every state not just New York. So is the gasoline. But if Oswego County decides to do something like charging, I am willing to pay. Illionois was giving away free birth, death and marriage records and went broke doing it. They had to put a halt to it this year so people on the Cook Co. List told Illinois Secretary of State what we all thought would be a good fee to pay. People offered their services to help get the info online and so they decided that paying 10.00 a record was fair enough and now you can access the site free but in order to get a copy they charge ten dollars for that copy. Michigan is not cheap either on their vital records. They won't even do a look up without charging a 3.00 search fee and then they charge you for the record which is 17.00 per copy. So we need to encourage the Counties and States to put this info online and then let them know that if they charge a small fee to access the records they will not lose like Illinois did. 1. This hobby is expensive enough, don't give the legislature any ideas

In NY State, the cost for Genealogy copies of Birth, Death & Marriage records have now doubled to $22 a piece, as of August 1st. Then add the $1.67 a gallon I just saw in Fulton for a gallon of gas, 65 cents a page to photocopy records in County Offices, the $40 a year to join the Onondaga Historical Association, the $ for membership to the Oswego Genealogy Society, the $35 an hour to get an hours worth of information on burials at Catholic Cemeteries (St. Agnes & St. Mary's) in Syracuse.....shall I go on???? That's all locally, want to discuss out of the area searches, out of state & county researching???? I do many lookups for free for people around the Internet. I have gone to Albany (over 2 hrs. away) to hand deliver the requests for Vital Statistics Records from NY State. This has gotten records back in a few weeks compared to many months. I have done lookups at the National Archives in Pittsfield, MA, also. I frequently do searches in the libraries in Central, NY & drop by cemeteries, court Houses, etc., for others also. I have not had very good paying jobs for quite a while & have also been laid off and was out of work for over a year. The economy here is very poor. Please don't cause the cost of this hobby to increase by suggesting a way to charge for things that have been free or extremely inexpensive. This hobby at least is a comfortable way that people can help others, socialize, and have fun. Please don't suggest ways that people have to stop enjoying it by making it more expensive than it already is. Budget cuts can be made elsewhere & they will figure out other ways of generating income, just please don't give them any ideas toward our Genealogy hobby direction. Thanks Anne

Cable TV For Inmates, No. By Jean Payton 8/13/2003 I for one am greatly appalled to think that the people who are in jail get to watch cable TV and the tax payers are paying this in Oswego County. They are not there because they were good little boys and girls. They are criminals and should not be allowed Cable TV and the Taxpayers should not have to pay for this service. Take the money from the Cable and pay Barbara Dix her salary. If these criminals need something to do, get out and have them clean up the road sides, clean up the parks, but don't let them sit there and watch Cable TV. Even my husband and I don't have Cable TV to watch so why should they have it? We live on Social Security and we make less than Barbara does but even her 23,000.00 a year is a very low amount for her job qualifications. The County of Oswego should be ashamed of themselves. Barbara Dix is a huge asset to Oswego County and to consider eliminating her job when other cuts can be made first such as eliminating Cable TV should be done. She brings money into the County while criminals try taking it out. Some comparison this is. Where is this boards mind? The criminals get to watch TVbut Barbara Dix loses her job. What about the other businesses in Oswego? Do they get put aside just so the criminals can watch TV? I think the people who are serving on this board need to do a heads up and cut out spending that is trivial and by no means important such as Cable T V. How many cars are being driven by county officials? Why can't they drive their own cars and at their own expense? If you need to cut corners then you park these cars and do what everyone else is doing driving their own and paying for their own gasoline. Why should the taxpayers have to foot that bill also. I am quite sure if I were to be on this board there were be a lot of extras cut off before I started cutting jobs. When you get down to the nitty gritty then you think about cutting jobs but not before then. Jean Payton, New Port Richey, Florida

    3. Here is where the hearings will be heard on the budget cuts for Oswego Co. If you can attend, please do. If you know anyone that lives in or near Oswego Co., please contact them and ask them if they can attend as well. I'm hoping the numbers will count! Thanks, Dianne http://www.oswegodailynews.com/homearticle.asp?id=31939&section=home&network=oswego Oswego County Legislature Will Meet Aug. 14 in County Courthouse The location of Thursday's meeting of the Oswego County Legislature has been changed to the County Courthouse on East Oneida Street, Oswego. Legislature Chairman Morris Sorbello has moved the meeting to the courthouse because it is expected that more people may attend Thursday's session than the legislative chambers can accommodate. The courtroom is larger than the legislative chambers. The meeting is at 2 p.m. Visitors to all court facilities must go through a metal detector, and Chairman Sorbello suggests that people allow for extra time to go through the security procedure.

    3. Dear Marilyn: Since I live in Florida I am unable to be at that meeting but I have written letters to all of the board members and also to the Oswego County Daily News. Please be very voiceful while being at the meeting for me also. I agree one hundred percent that she should be allowed to keep her job as Historian. I know that she has been a great help to me in the four visits I paid to the Offices. I am quite sure that the board members can find other ways to cut spending without cutting jobs. I offered some suggestions to board members and hopefully they will try them out. One was: Putting all records online and charging a membership fee to access these records just as the NEHGS does in Boston. We genealogists already know that in order to keep these records available that we will have to pay for services. I am agreeable to pay for this service. I told them also that I pay out over 500.00 a year in membership for online access and one more isn't going to break the bank.
