We recently loaded an updated version of Netscape, and its formating is quite different from our older one. Glad to learn the D-list and L-list can appear different, to others. I was first on the L-list, and found that ON MY screen I received all of the past conversation (string) on the D-list, and felt better informed, so I switched. Are the lists managers really responsible for this? johnson

    3. I did not mean to start anything, just explaining to someone why someone else was confused about the message she had received--the original person did not realize the message had come through the NYOSWEGO mail list, and had wondered how this person had gotten her e-mail address. 3. Hi I am on many lists. I prefer not to have information describing the list origin in the subject line. I receive messages in digest form. When I open the first (lead in or introductory) Administrative file, I scan the subject lines. The subject line only allows for a limited number of characters. When list administrators choose to include characters (anything but the actual subject of the message) in the subject line not only is it non informative - it 'takes up character spaces used to accurately describe the subject. This is necessary for people who receive hundreds of e-mails a day. We have to be able to screen messages quickly. Screening is done most effectively when the name of the list is omitted allowing the spaces to more accurately describe the 'true' content of the message! -----Original Message----- From: Jacqueline Munch [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, September 06, 2003 11:15 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: Subject line for NYOSWEGO mailing list This is the only mailing list I'm on that does not identify itself in the subject. I've always wondered why. I have ppprobably deleted many of them not even knowing they were from the Oswego list, since I don't like to open unknown messages. Whoever is responsible for this list should take some action to get that identification in the subject line as a courtesy to all of us. Jacquie

    3. This is the only mailing list I'm on that does not identify itself in the subject. I've always wondered why. I have ppprobably deleted many of them not even knowing they were from the Oswego list, since I don't like to open unknown messages. Whoever is responsible for this list should take some action to get that identification in the subject line as a courtesy to all of us. Jacquie

Many people like to receive emails one at a time, and there is no identifying of them except by who they are addressed to, and many email programs do not automatically show that. On the Digest, you can see the subjects that those of us on the regular list see in our subject lines by scrolling through your list to the individual mails. Subject lines are numbered, I believe. 3. ROOTSWEB REVIEW news is very, very good. It solves many problems and prevents problems by informing us of the best way to post our messages: Don't forget - these messages go all over the world. Our 'shorthand' way of talking is not only different than in other countries, but also different in other parts of our own country. They suggest noting cities AND states. And instead of assuming everyone reading the lists/boards ALREADY know what is going on, so consider that someone who sees a lists/board for the first time, is not already 'in the loop'. So writng in complete sentences is much better understood. Please check-in to receiving "Rootsweb Review". It's provided by the 'experts' in genealogy research. Hope this helps. johnson
